Filipinos Losing It?

Is it just me or has anyone else noticed a dearth of Pinoys in the 2012 top 10 AZB Money Leader Board? This would have been almost inconceivable a couple of years back but it seems the Pinoys haven't been winning the big tournaments lately...have we seen the end of Filipino Pool dominance? And what could have been the factors that led to it?

Is there still the same level of Filipino participation? It seemed like every tournament I went to years back they were all over the place.

Maybe the kind of money they're making isn't the kind that shows up on the Top 10 AZB Money Leader Board ;)!!!

Just a thought.

I think this next generation of players from th PI just needs a few more tounaments under their belt before they take the best pool players crown back. As far as gambling I'd say there still #1. Johnnyt

I honestly believe the new generation of pinoys are amazing, There isn't one person on planet earth today including everyones beloved SVB that is imo better than a coin flip to beat them, Ex, Alcano, Orcullo, Alex, Corteza. There can be many reasons but I doubt it's because of a lack of skill in any way.

I really believed if Alex cared a little bit more and actually put in the practice like he used too, he would be back at world no 1 spot in no time. To bad he doesn't do the work like the rest of them.

so ya I am not sure why this might be occuring, all of these guys play so good anymore it can be anyones year. it's still early maybe we will see them snapping off a few big ones.

One last thing btw and I am not taking anything away from Shane's ability and how great he has been playing but you gotta remember one thing. He does win a lot of tournaments but he plays in literally everything, a lot of the other guys just don't appear to be as dedicated.

I hate to say it, but a team of the top five filipinos (Dennis, Lee Vann, Bustie, Alex and either Ronnie, Efren or Carlo Biado) would be a favorite over any team from any other country (or continent for that matter). Only China (a combined team) would be close, with Europe a third choice. The USA is fourth in this equation sorry to say.

If there was a Mosconi Cup type competition with teams from four continents facing the filipino team, I'd be betting on the Pinoys. One thing about these guys, they know how to win and aren't afraid to win. In fact they really WANT to win! If you think these things aren't factors then you don't really know much about team sports.

I just watched the great Yang get destroyed in back to back weeks by Carlo Biado and Francisco. Both the Pinoy players put the pressure on early and never let up. I think he left Manila gasping for air.

poolplayer yes /Rhodes Scholar, not so much.

errrrr...what's a dearth ?

The Filipinos are probably just as good as they were a few years ago, they just happen to play less events...

This is what I posted about the poolscene in Manila in another thread, and is probably some of the answer.

"Not much to tell about talents. To be honest, things have changed, dramatically it seems like, since my first visit here in February 2007.

In 2007 there were lots of tournaments going on around the world, with the biggest of them, the 2006 and 2007 World 9-ball going in Manila, plus many other tournaments. In 2008 there were two billiard organisations here who put up maybe dozens of national tournaments with $10000 first prize, and during these years Philippines sent many players to international events.

This attracted lots of players and lots of backers, and much money was changing hands in the poolhalls.

Since 2006 the IPT died, World 9-ball quit, the World Ten Ball in Manila stiffed/delayed payments, US Open changed the payouts during a tournament, pool got bad rep it seems like, cause now there are very few top players around playing the game from day to day like before. Fewer Filipinos is also sent to international events. Even Efren skipped US Open and DCC two years ago.

In 2007 Django, Efren, Alcano, Orcullo, Gomez, De Luna etc were all at One Side, playing eachohter for 10 000 - 200 000 pesos a match. Those matches doesn't excist anymore, or are atleast very rare to happen.

Now the players who are just below these guys plays all the time, for 500-5000 pesos a match, and sometimes 15000-25000. The top guns stay away, and most of the backers have moved on. Maybe they practise on daytime, but the days of daily moneymatches between worldchamps seems to be gone.

It is still more than enough challenges for anyone who wants, there are lines of players eager to take on any white guy arriving, but I have to admit it was more fun playing moneymatches when you had players as Efren, Django and Alcano doing the same on the table next to you.

I will still recommend One Side and Manila for anyone who would like to improve their game, I'm just saying it is not what it used to be, and that I'm happy I was here three times during 2007 and 2008, when it most likely was at it's best.

Both pooladdict and Jay Helfert have been here a lot since 2006, so I would like their inputs on this. Maybe I have the wrong impression."

Practice • Action • Gym • Tournaments • More Practice

In addition to all of the other good observations, I think an honorable mention of Shane Van Boening is in good taste for the following reason.

Shane knows the practicing and competitive work ethic of the Filipino players as does most of the rest of the world. It is my belief that Shane has taken notice of the hard practice and action matches which is utilized by most of the top Filipino players and has made these routines his own.

When more American players finally realize that Shane's work ethic is what makes him GREAT, we will have even more competition for the rest of the world including the Filipinos.

Recently, Shane was in the Philippines and was even beating BATA for the cash, playing one pocket. I will still stake Efren in every mini tournament that I attend. :D

The Filipinos may not be as omnipresent as they have been in the past but even now, one could never conclude that they are "losing it". :p

Maybe some of our American players will take a clue from Shane. It's not easy practicing 10-12 hours per day but being a champion isn't easy either.

My guess, cost of travel, overhead and benefit$. The pay scale risk and common sense dictate it's too risky....Lets Stay Home seems more appropriate.

Shane is the man of the year and can be for many years to come so drop all of that euro crap, just ask mika (euro's best) how much he will play Shane for. And the next time Busti plays Shane I'll open the window betting on Shane.--Leonard

I wish I could play that much, but I wouldn't have my home and drive my dream car
