I have a Kamui S on one of my shafts. It plays nicely, but it's quite a hard tip and has a "clicky" sound. I haven't tried a Kamui SS. That might be better.
The Sniper is a great soft tip. It plays like a soft tip, but feels firmer (after a week or so of break-in).
The Onyx tip, also from Tiger, is basically a Sniper tip that uses cured leather. This tip feels much firmer than a Sniper, but grabs the cueball and feels and sounds fantastic (firm, solid and resonant)--much like a good Triangle. The Onyx quickly became my favorite tip. It does everything well and seems to wear like steel.
A solid vote from me for Tiger Onyx. I went thru a couple of tips trying to find something I liked and this one really suits me well. Again, tips are oh so.....personal.....no one can really say, "You're gonna love this!".....and truly know for sure.
I'd classify the Onyx as a medium-ish tip, as far as firmness. It has a slight "plink" to it, but that could also be from the cue itself. It wears very well, IMO. It ever-so-slightly mushroomed after about a month, as it settled, but after one trim up......it looks and feels great now, with NO further mushrooming.
I put on a nice layer of Kamui chalk about once a week, before and after using the dreaded Tip Pick to "ingrain" it in there. After that, I just use basic Master's chalk when I play, to keep my pre-shot routine intact. I'll probably get a year and a half out of this tip and I shoot about 3-4 times a week.
FWIW, I tried an Emerald, Kamui Medium and Tiger Sniper before I settled on the Tiger Onyx.
Emerald: didn't like it at all.
Kamui Medium: just didn't feel how I like for a tip to feel.
Tiger Sniper: liked it fairly well.
I tried the Onyx out when I went to a new Gary Johnson custom cue and they match up perfectly.....for me.
Not sure who you're kidding with all of this JB, you could shoot with a broken, Kentucky broom handle and still sweep up the joint afterwards.
