who is the best players in philly?

Yeah, and when I read it the first time way back when, I knew it was crap then too.:D. SO DID EVYONE FROM THE ROOM!!!

"MUST HAVE BEEN 12 YEARS OLD"?!?!" HAHAHAHA!
He hadn't even walked into the pool room at 12. Let alone gone to any tournaments to be seen by anyone or been good enough to actually impress anyone.
Drexeline Billiards didn't even OPEN till the spring of 1989, and Corey would have been 11 at the time of it opening. He wouldn't have been 12 till that fall.
Believe me, he WASN'T there on day 1. His mom didn't bring him there till years later.

Who knows. Maybe the Ohio guys wanted to adopt "the legend" of Corey Deuel for themselves.

I mean, seriously. Take a good long look at the newspaper clipping photo.
How old do YOU thinks he looks there?
Cause if he looked like that at 15...:rolleyes:LOL.
But let's not let distortions be accepted as fact, cause the part about his age in the story, is just a total load of bull. A huge pile of it.

So basically what is being said in the article is that he never went to high school in PA.
HAHA.
I dunno about Ohio, but the minimum age someone can drop out of school in the state of PA, is 16 and that's WITH a parents signature.
So what that article is basically saying, is that, he was allowed special circumstances to drop out of school, and to leave his moms side, to be adopted by Dee's family.
At 13 no less. BECAUSE OF POOL.

Do you have any idea exactly how ridiculous that sounds?
Especially since he hadn't even picked up a cue at that age?

I mean, based on your responses, I can gather that Ohio likes to claim him for their own.
That's fine and dandy, but distortions of the truth are still distortions.

Did Corey eventually leave and transplant to Ohio? Yes. Believe me, no one is disputing that.
But to say that he did it at 13, is one of the biggest distortions there is.
It's easy to understand why people might think he was younger. People took one look at him and got his age wrong all the time.
He didn't sprouts till like 16, and before that, he was SMALL.
But for someone like Dee to say that is just a total embellishment and distortion of the truth. Why? Only Dee can answer that.

ANYONE who knew Corey from when he started playing pool can call bull on the age in the story.
Heck, anyone with any math skills can call bull.

But that's ok.
I'm not trying to change your mind.
You keep on believing what you want to believe. Doesn't stop it from being totally 100% wrong.:D

Lol-lerskates..... Did Cory ever text you back? LOL

So you're saying Cory went to school until he was 16?

You are sticking with the, "he left for Ohio and moved in with Dee at 13" angle?

LOL.
Let's see.
Allen Hopkins Super Billiards expo, 1993 at the meadowlands.
Corey won the juniors division.
Maybe you can tell us if Corey caught a bus from Ohio to go to the event, if Dee or Dee's parents drove him to the event, or if someone else drove him there.
Please include where they picked him up at, and where they dropped him off at before and after the tournament.
:D

Does anyone recall a hustler from Philly named Bernie Brooks? I heard he used to play Peter Rabbit alot. I am not sure if he had a nickname or not.

Sure you don't mean Melvin Brooks? Melvin was a fine Baltimore player and was known as Strawberry.

STrawrrr-berie. That's how we says it here in his hometown of DC!
(good greif, please don't let me be wrong!)

And I just talked to Corey.

He said the years between 11-16 are lost because he was into whippets and brown liquor rteal heavy then.

He doesn't remember what he told the news lady.

Yes I am sure he was a player from Philly. He made his living hustling pool so I figured someone on here must of heard of him. I'll see if I can find out what rooms he played out of back in the day.

Even though he's from Quakertown, a burb about a half hour outside of Philly, Adam Keilar is playing pretty well right now.

A little more seasoning is all he needs to reach the top levels.

Yeah, saw him giving Dennis Hatch all he could handle on the Turning Stone stream this past weekend. Adam is quite a player.

Who knows what would have happened if he didn't have a brain fart on that BIH 3 ball out where he scratched.

Massive swing there.

He is well on his way though.

Thinking about Philly area greats

Jose Garcia must be mentioned. From Vineland NJ, 30 minutes S.E. from Philly. A straight pool technician and all around great player

Jose Garcia is a beast but...not considered a Philly guy. Jose is a Jersey guy.

She has spent years in Bucks County Pennsylania at Pete Fusco's room in Feasterville, perhaps 20 miles from Philadelphia.

Looks like I'm going to be playing a little pool in Philly myself. My daughter's boyfriend is going to be pitching basball for Penn U. next year, and my youngest daughter (who you met at dinner in New York) was just awarded an academic scholarship to Temple, College of Science and Technology. Unfortunately, she couldn't get into Penn despite her high academics.

We're making a scouting trip to Temple next month. She's visited Penn but not Temple, so we want to make sure she's OK with it before we proceed.

Anyway, I plan on visitng a few people there too and play some pool when time permits.

Don't know whether you realize it or not, Chris, but I am not only a graduate of Penn's Wharton School but I also interviewed candidates for admission to Penn for many years.

Temple's a fine school, too. Have a great trip to Philadelphia, a city I've always liked, and wishing your daughter, whose company I enjoyed way back when, everything good wherever she ends up.

I didn't know that but it's a very impressive accomplishment, congratulations.

No love for Lou Butera? I know he was from Pittston PA originally but I thought he played out of Philly quite a bit. Maybe I'm mistaken.

He never amounted to much though. He ran 150 and out against Allen Hopkins but it took him forever, something like 21 minutes! Oh yeah, he also made it into the little know place called the BCA hall of fame.

I think threads like this need some ground rules. Like, wherever the proposed player is from, there needs to be a significant sports population that routes for the team for the city in question.

In other words, we can't put Lou Butera up for Philly since he's from Pittsburgh. But maybe we can say Rempe (Scranton).

Hope this helps, but at this point I can't see how

Freddie <~~~ might as well be called a Philly

Scranton is 2 hours away from Philly.
