Why are the cues of Dennis Searing so extremely expensive? Do they play so extraordinary well, doesn't he build anymore or does he build so few, or what is it?

All of the above plus more. I don't have any experience with them other than one of the local players has one so I got to hold it and have a look.

We live aboot as far away from Searings shop as one can get. So that in itself is amazing that one should find its way this far North in Canada.

When a sneakie conversion from Dennis can command a $3000 price tag, or at least, asking price, he must be doing something right.

A long waiting list so others must feel the same. I would be long gone before I could have one made, thats fer sure.

No no, all of the above is impossible, either he doesn't build anymore or he stlil is building but does very slowly / few. Anybody who knows without speculation?

Dennis' cues play exceptionally well, IMO. I have played with quite a few of his cues. That, however, is in the eyes of the beerholder as they say. He is local to me and does all of my cue work. He is a very good player and knows how a cue should play. I think that is important. He is extraordinarily particular about every detail of the cue. His inlays with precious metals rival a jeweler. Having said all of that, I personally can't justify the wait time. I'm too impatient.

He 100% still builds cues, but not many a year.

Dennis crafts around 20 cues in a year, atm his waiting list is around 10 years. Yes, his cues are pricey, meticulous craftsmanship , top level work . Luxuous cues do have a price.
And do not speak about his tools/machinery.waw.
Of special interest is to visit him in Florida. A super, super nice man.
Warning : there is a lion guarding his shop ;) :

I only saw a few pictures of conversions and sneakies from Dennis. What else does he build? Any pictures of non-conversions / non-sneakies?

I know with certainty if you buy one of his cues you will never miss a ball again. Efren will need the 5. I'd say that's worth quite a bit to pay for.

Who knows why they have such a reputation

if there were a fair way to test them I would bet Schon cues play better

I doubt that most of the people who praise them so highly have ever hit one.

One thing I do know,he told me I was on top of his list over 4 years ago
and then went years without returning my calls, I seriously will put up money to bet that the schon hits better, plays better or is preferred by more people

I would also bet that the Larry Vigus that I play with hasa better finish and hits better too

Pool players like to bet, here is an offer to bet

This is just my offer and is not backed by the manufacturer.

I will also bet my Larry Vigus is hands down better looking,it is now in the cue gallery

please post if anyone wishes to call this bet

I am with you DEANOC. I had been on his his waiting list since about 2004 or sooner. Then about 4 or 5 years ago I had several conversations with Dennis Searing and passed many emails back and forth. I thought all was good and I would be getting my new cue soon. We had discussed veneer colors, points, inlays, etc. We were discussing his new way of doing veneers that were virtually seamless. He even sent me photos of some of the veneer work he was doing at the time.

Then all of a sudden there was silence. No more responding to my emails and no more returning my phone calls. It was as if he had disappeared.

Very piss poor customer relationship from someone that is suppose to be so nice and so tallented.

I am on the same page as the above guy.

Dennis has me on the list since SBE 2003. ITS FOR A WILLIE Hoppe conversion. Ill skip all the details and say. I have been promised for over 5 years and been told its in final spray for those 5 years. Thats when hes polite enough to return a call. Hes given me his WORD ON MANY OCCASION my cue will be done in 3o days. Hes promised delivery at a few SBE SHOWS. It really amazes me his piss poor customer service. IT also amazes me he shows up at SBE and delivers cues to people that have in no way waited 1o years. Im glad to see im not the only one. So i continue to wait.

Previous cue wait times.
Mike Lambros - 12 months. Excellent communication.
Bob Manzino - 5 months for a hoppe conversion. Excellent communication.
Richard chuddy. - 8 months. Excellent communication.

Just examples of some of the good businessmen out there.

I was fortunate to be able to acquire a Searing jump break and a nice 5 point player that I use... I'm not a gun safe cue owner, I play with them daily.

Clearly, you don't know what you don't know. A Schon? Come on.

As far as service is concerned, Dennis has been as accommodating as I could ask for and did complete refinish work on both cues, a re-wrap and made a playing shaft for the jump break.

I enjoyed speaking with him and learning from him while visiting his shop, and, the other poster is right about his dog, about licked me to death. Just vicious.

I had a college teammate Mike on my billiards team at FSU that had a Searing. This was about 13-14 years ago. It was a classic looking 4 pointer with veneers. Apparently his dad knew Dennis and was able to pick it up back then for a supposed $8k.

I was an okay player then, but when he let me play a few racks with it, it was almost night and day with the hit. I was playing with a Meucci then (insert joke here...), but it was about the best hitting cue I had ever used. Now Mike was by far the best player on our team, but everyone was in awe by his Searing, almost as if it was magical, lol.

i am not woofing i am willing to bet schon plays better

lets put up $1000 and figure out a blind test

or my larry vigus ,just ask 1000 people which one they would rather own
my cue or any of the rather plain looking cues of his

the picture of my vigus is in the gallery,i would not trade

Obviously Larry Vigus is a better maker than Searing because you say so.

I gotta say its weird though...when I talk to great modern cuemakers and ask them who's work they respect I have never heard one say "That Larry Vigus is a bad ass..." However I have heard many of them mention Searing as a leader in the craft.

What the hell do they know though.
