One-Word Thread

Pointless...

LOL! Totally get that. :D

Off topic, but I just had to tell you that my daughter is now looking into further her education at Georgetown for a specialty. She's applying, hoping to get in. She was admitted into some sorority for her grade point average. She's doing well.

This pool world is a tough racket. To be successful, it seems like most of the pro players, whose chosen endeavors were originally to compete in pool competitions, have turned to other pool-related enterprises.

Allen Hopkins went to promoting events. Nick Varner and Mike Sigel created their own brand of cue sticks. Shannon Daulton, Tommy Kennedy, Tony Curtis, and Mike Zuglan started running regional pool tours. Billy Incardona, Grady Mathews, Jimmy Wych, and Danny DiLiberto are today well-known pool commentators.

Johnny Archer and Kim Davenport run a pool room in Georgia. I would venture to guess that because they are well-liked players, this must contribute to this venture. Other players have not been as fortunate with running pool rooms and turning a profit.

I have watched with awe the recent resurgence of C.J. Wiley and admire how he has jumped back into the pool world with both feet. Because of his entrepreneurial skills, to include instructional videos, he was able to again enjoy pool at a height which many never reach, which is being at the recent Mosconi Cup as their coach. That is, in my opinion, a tribute to his efforts to make something good happen in the pool world, rather than sitting back and wondering what happened.

I know I'm asking for it by creating this thread, but I am working on a pool-related project and need to examine the status quo to date.

I am inviting social shooters, railbirds, action junkies, pool enthusiasts of all kinds, weekend warriors, amateurs, and pro-caliber players to please contribute to this thread. When you think of today's pool world, what one word comes to mind? TIA to any and all responders.

The biggest problem with pool is the fact that it does not make you well off in one tournament win, or 100 wins, yet it demands so much time and effort more than many other sports; So those that play Golf, Tennis..etc in one win they make 20 times as much money as the entire 128 top pool players payout in a whole one year!!!
So the bottom line pool players MUST work other jobs, and it is unfortunate it cannot be while in their prime

I just used Google search for some random stuff, see below:

Searched players names:

Tiger Woods, About 110,000,000 results (0.22 seconds)
Efren Reyes About 1,010,000 results (0.20 seconds)

Searched sport name:

Golf About 1,250,000,000 results (0.41 seconds)
Football About 1,420,000,000 results (0.24 seconds)
Tennis About 555,000,000 results (0.31 seconds)
Billiard About 50,700,000 results (0.27 seconds)
Pool About 989,000,000 results (0.29 seconds) (many hits due to the multiple meaning-lucky for pool!!)

that her communication skills and personal grace are even close to her mom's. That young lady (and, JAM. That's what she is when she leaves for college) will sail through Georgetown like, in the words of
UJ Puckett "pattin' for a dance".
And I'm sure there are a world of AZrs out there who agree.
Keep it JAM like. Alfie

PS. I'm still trying to think of a word. Good thread. tough question, Jennie.

Potential.... Sorry, missed Mark's post. Great word for a great game.

Jen,

Thanks for posting that photo. We have another of Alex on the same table with first prize cash spread out in front of him. What a great infectious smile he has.

Who's the guy to the left of Alex in your photo? Think I know him !

Sincerely hope the two of you have recovered, even slightly, from your losses.

Therapeutic is my word.

I have a home table and look forward to playing every single day! Some people never find an enjoyable activity that lasts a lifetime and most people don't recognize the therapeutic value in this from a mental perspective.

Pool is very Zen like. It is a meditative type activity that calms and focuses the mind. Have you ever been "in the zone" and not been calm and focused? Yes, there are other activities that will put you in that relaxed state and might even allow you to make a living at it. But I can think of very few that can be performed at all age levels, is competitive but can be played alone, can be played anytime of the year, and allows for social interaction. It is for these reasons that I don't believe pool is dead or will die. It is therapeutic. Thanks for asking JAM.
