You really should get a table for your home!!!

I really feel for you posters that do not have a table at home. Many of you claim that you do not have room to have one, but I bet, at least for some of you, that you DO have room, you just do not want to utilize the space for the table. Let me give you hope (if you can make the sacrifice OR get your significant other to agree to it):

I live in a boxy little three bedroom, one and three-quarter bath, two car garage, 1,500 square foot home. It's just my wife and I (well, right this moment my 28 year-old son is staying with us for a "while"). My wife, being the best wife ever, gave me permission to turn our 18' x 14' living room into my "Man-Cave". Got the 8-foot Brunswick. Got the 4 spectator chairs. Got all my wall-hangings, etc. The room is a true "Man-Cave". What we did was turn one of our spare bedrooms into an office/television-watching room. Got a 42-inch flat screen hanging on the wall (also doubles as the computer monitor). Got two Lay-Z-Boy recliners on the back wall. It's all we need for no more television than we watch. Now, you see, the pool room is where everything happens at my house. I spend far more time shooting pool than I do watching television. When company comes over, we visit over a couple/few games of 9-ball. Best renovation I've ever made to one of my homes, EVER!!! And....all with my lovely wife's blessings.

So, it may not be that you don't have room, it's just that you won't take the necessary steps/sacrifices to have the room.

I strongly urge you people in the "I don't have room in my home" boat to re-assess exactly what room you DO have in your home and beg/plead/implore your significant other to see the benefits of having a home table (you're home more, spending less money, and your clothes/hair don't have to smell like cigarette smoke) and get to work on your own "Man-Cave".

i agree, the past year i havent had one-wow pool time is expensive and i dont play near as much. i have a box going up pretty soon. i have had them in the garage when i was in a 1200 sqft house. its a great plan.

Currently have one in my living room but since daughters and grandbaby have moved in have to go with plan B since I really need the living room space for them! This weekend clean out garage; next weekend move pool table into garage; operation new alternate man cave is getting ready to happen. Luckily it is finished and stays dry. Portable ac/hummidier is ordered. Gotta do what you gotta do.

I agree. Anyone who loves pool should try their best to have one, regardless the size you have to accommodate. Nothing like walking 50-100' to shoot some pool whenever you like.
But also like to get out to the halls on occasion, other than just for tourneys. It mixes up the kind of tables you play on, and of course being sociable with friends. And it helps support your local rooms.

Given the condition of most pool hall pool tables I agree with anyone that likes to play pool having a table at home. Pool halls table conditions are abysmal in most cases. The industry is changing and I think in the near future more pool halls will become extinct with a few large places able to survive here and there. Pool is becoming an at home game and I think that may be why many table mechanics are as busy as they are. They certainly are not busy at pool halls and I bet RKC and the other master craftsman like himself would agree. Time will tell but the heyday of pool is fading faster all the time. I play as much in private homes as I do in pool halls now and see that time shifting more towards playing in private homes all the time.

If you can fit one in just about anywhere and pool is one of your hobbies and you can afford some size table...get one. If you really like love to shoot pool you will cut your TV down to just about nothing and get much better in a pretty short time. With all the info on the net and available to buy you can pass many hours bringing your game up for pennies an hour. Johnnyt

I wonder

....just wondering how much room area (length and width) one needs to put a
9 foot table in? I wouldn't want to be bumping my cue butt up against a wall to shoot anywhere nor do I want to have to use a "shortie" cue.......What would be the minimum space needed?

But we also have to look at it like this, pool halls are abysmal because many play pool at home and don't support the pool hall. It is why I try to do both.

If you don't want that cramped feeling I would say a 15' x 19' room.
The Brunswick chart says less but you need to stroke the 58" cue.

I also chose a eight ft. GC. Nine just don't fit. It's hard to practice in a pool hall, someone always wants to play. Now I do drills which is huge. Don't have to play for hours to get my time at the table. Nice to stop, eat, answer the phone, spank the monkey or take my mandatory retirement naps. Wifey cooking dinner, I go hit some. Wifey wants to watch a chick flick, go hit balls. Raining, can't go fishing, hit balls. Life is good.

One thing is for sure, most homes with basements are a better candidate for a full size pool table than you might think.

Putting up a few steel plates and removing a few lally columns, and replacing them in a new footing at the end of the steel beam isn't all that difficult in lots of situations.

Have a 10' table less than 25' away from me at all times and a poker room ~ 5miles away - life couldn't be better:thumbup:
And 5 bars/restaraunts anywhere from straight across the street to 2 blocks away

Your wife is a champion! Most won't go for that setup in the living room.

You want to hear something funny,
I have a super nice custom pool table setup in the basement my old home, I rent that home out, moved down south, and have no pool table in the home I'm currently living in. WTF...my renters are enjoying a 6 br on 2.5 acres with a *****en pool room, while I'm in a 4 br on a splinter of land with no pool rm. oh well, I'm in paradise :-)
Didn't use my table much anyway.
Lets see, now that I think about it,
My 4 wheeler, chainsaw, and deer heads, bear rugs, etc are at my buddies house too.
I didn't bring but half my shit with me down south:eek: , besides, I upgraded the sportsman 500 to a jacked up golf cart

My wife and I are moving to NC in a month and just went out there to buy a home. She was golden when it came to looking at homes. I had 2 rules....
1. It had to be able to have a separate garage to hold our 3rd car (for some reason, it was hard to find a home with a 3 car garage)
2. It had to have a room that was at least 15' x 20' for a pool table

We found a home that had 12' ceiling in the double garage and she suggested a 4 post drive on lift (thinking Bendpak) to make it 3 car capable. It also has a killer sized living room that can swallow any pool table. It may be a year or so before a table happens...or it may never happen....but at least the house is ready for the table. It seemed a crime to guarantee that it couldn't happen by buying too small.

At one place I lived, I didn't have room for my table (1938 10 foot Saunier & Wilhelm) to properly play, even with short sticks.

I shoved the table into a corner (leaving about an 18" gap) just so that I could practice shots from the other two sides. Yeah - it got boring at times.

I made games up that included cross side banking and long shots with my friends, with ball in hand penalties for leaving impossible shots. We played away just as much as if the full table way in use. (I still got great short and long rail banking skills because of that.)

If there's a table, there's a way.
