Why so many stake threads?

It's kinda sad but every time I get on AZ which is several times a day there is always a new one popping up! I'll say it do no one else has too, damn you cleary!

Sad really

It would seem that these people would have someone close to them that believed in them enough to put up the small amount of money it takes to play in these events. If they don't then why should random people on the Internet who have no affiliations to you believe.

Wow... I would not have expected this given the quote from Albert... maybe the only place that can recognize the value in chasing a dream in pro pool is a place that shares in the belief that the game itself has value.... no?

Regardless of my feelings about dreams and the pursuit of them.

The reason I say that is that I'm not a great player BUT if I wanted to play ANY event and truly thought/believed I had a chance to do well in that event, then there are 20+ people that I KNOW PERSONALLY to some degree who would give me the money to play in a heartbeat. They would do this because 1 I'm a good guy who they know will play my heart out for their cash and 2 because I would never ask for the stake or play in the event without thinking/believing I have a chance to do well.

I'm not gonna get specific but I know alot of pool players(some more skilled, some less skilled than me) that I wouldn't trust to do the same. So that's my thing, I see a post like that on a forum and all I can think is why would this person not be able to get what he/she needs from people they know? There has to be a reason be it personal or lack of ability in either case my wallet is closed.

Nothing wrong with it, and it bothers you how?
I've been involved in a couple and will throw in a few more I suspect.
Everything bothers somebody ...........

I suspect it's because professional pool players only know other professional pool players. It's hard to make new friends, or keep old ones, with the constant travel of a professional pool player.

The other factor is that they've probably tapped out their few existing friends with previous stake requests.

I don't see anything wrong with asking for stakeholders on AZ or any other site. It's got to be a pretty humbling experience and I think it takes a lot of courage to ask strangers to believe in you.

I think based on the membership here alot of the pros that have looked to get staked here likely know more than a cpl of AZers....

I'm in for $100 to get Lee Brett into the 10ball event.. I wish it could be more but times they are tough all around... Lee is a friend of mine and an open request to me was way different that a private PM or email asking if I was interested... Something in private tends to feel like a bite... Something in the forum not so much... If I couldn't afford to do anything I could have just slept the fact the thread was on here....

In the past I have shipped cash out for different things from Robley to Juniors trying to get to tournaments...

I didn't ship it on the Cliff thread because it wasn't really Cliff but knowing Cliff I might have tossed $100 or so in on that if it had been...

JesseB.... Gonna pass on that stake thread mainly because I don't know him personally so more or less am not invested in caring if he gets to play or not......

I really don't have a problem with the stake threads... I'll toss in where I want and ignore them where I don't.....

Maybe the players involved should consider another line of work if they cannot even afford to do what they do for a living... lol?

I think its funny when guys like John Schmidt come on here and beg for money.. Isn't he supposed to be some sort of champion? Yet he cannot afford to put himself into a $600 tourney.

Is this poor money management, lack of confidence or what? (maybe scared and knowing they probably won't cash)

I would love to travel the world and do nothing for a living... Would someone please stake me? :)

You got it.

I can't see the problem with steak threads. I happen to like steak.
My favorite is a nice juicy Porter...What? He was talking about backing a player with money?
My bad. Carry on.

Oh, come on. You all know I had to do it. :)

With all due respect to you as a player, John Schmidt did win the U.S. Open 9-Ball Championship on a stake from this forum. Before that time, he had a demonstrated track record of winning multiple events, gambled high, and was actually well known for his straight pool expertise.

It is no secret that the payouts in pool in 2013 are the same as they were 20, 30, 40 years ago. As I am sure you know, if you compete on the level that John Schmidt does, you have to win, place, or show to break even. Most times, you're playing world beaters, and you're stuck from previous tournaments when you did not win, place, or show.

I'm sure you are a great player and have a strong fan base. I see AzBilliards Team thinks enough of you to place a black banner beneath your name as a Pro Player.

I have contributed to stake committees for players I believe are worthy of being staked. Because I know how hard it is for the full-time professional player, I don't mind helping some of those pro players, if I can afford to, like the ones that come on here offering their services to others, donate their time to children, participate in charities, et cetera, et cetera.

In sum, it ain't poor money management as much as it is there ain't no money in professional pool. Now, before anyone comes on here and chants, "Nobody asked them to shoot pool for a living," I am just addressing why stake threads on AzBilliards are okay in my opinion. Similar to my stance with half-naked-women avatars, I know, once again, I am in the minority.

To add to the John Schmidt point, if anyone hasn't seen it, I highly suggest that you watch the TAR podcast with him and Corey Deuel. John gives some more insight into what his situation was at the time, and why he wasn't even going to play in the tournament to begin with. There was some interesting stuff said in that podcast, and I'm glad it worked out for him.

As for anyone who gets annoyed by the rib-eye threads, get over it. If a player wants to get porterhoused, and wants to come on the internet to do it, there is nothing wrong with that. Remember, it's not always about having faith in a player... it can also be about gamble... and there are plenty of people on this site that have plenty of gamble. Heck, just take a look at the "Action Room" forum. The only reason it's there, is for all the people with gamble in them. At the end of the day, if you want to top sirloin a pro player, then you just may have the opportunity to do it. If you don't want to new york strip a player, then don't even read the thread... it's not going to have any effect on you anyway.

Good post
All the people on here who love pool you could not find a Better place.
If a player needs say 1200 to get to a tourney it's easy on az to find say 12
People who will put up 100 each.
No one is in to deep but yet you still have a little sweat.
