Rhea the new Chapter, without Gene

Well said...

Action pool is definitely a drug for many. There are lots of top named players strung out on it. It's usually a life sentence once you catch the buzz. I'm thinking of several now as I type.

Being a road player is not the only way to get action there are other ways too.
For those of us who are doing a job, got a family to take care off and other bills to pay it's hard to comprehend what Rhea is doing. And that's because we don't have the same mindset. None of us can judge her on what she is doing because in all fairness none of us never felt the way she feels about the game and her choices in life. IMO any person should do whatever feels "right" to them, I have done somethings in my life that may sound "risky", "useless" or even "stupid" to other people, but i lived to tell the tale and i don't regret none of 'em. It's about giving best shot to what ever dream you have, we all got one life why not live it fearless and doing what we like to do ? No one knows what life is gonna throw at them, all we can do is to try harder and harder every time.
IMO like every road player she will have to come back "home", every journey has an end and nobody can escape it. The only question is how long it will last ? I think It's a way of life she has chosen regardless of the out come, hopefully this all has a great ending for her. So, yeah kudos to her for following her dream.

Car breaking down due to never changing the oil, an apartment with no electricity, van with problems, etc, doesn't sound like a whole lot of fun in my book. But hey, what do I know

Amen Bob! LOL. Great working with you! Have a great holiday! I may live out of a suitcase, but I have a nice home to go home to, and I stay plenty busy on the road...making CERTAIN $$$...not hoping to make a score. All I can say to Rhea is...good luck...and watch your back!

But she loves the game, man... :rotflmao:

Can't hold a job, so you became a road player... Great idea

In the mid 80's, I did exactly what Rhea is doing now. I lasted for 3 years. Times were a lot better then, and a lot of people gambled. Today, you have to be in the right areas to get games like there used to be.

It is a totally different mindset. No thought of the future at all, just enjoying every day as it comes. Actually, contrary to what working stiffs think, it's actually a pretty stress free way to live. The stress comes in when you stop living for today, and start living for tomorrow. And worrying about what the future holds for you.

One thing you must have, is the ability to not be materialistic in the least. As long as you have food in your belly, and enough money or stakers to play again, you are good to go. I lived in my car for about 7 months at one point. Every few days a bunch of us would chip in and get a flea bag motel for a day so we could shower. Then, I rented a piece of crap trailer for $90 a month for somewhere to sleep at night other than my car because the cops were getting to be too much hassle.

Fun way to live for a while, but eventually the future does come into play, and you have to prepare for it, or live the rest of your life without much. Problem comes into play when you don't get any action for a couple of weeks. Then, the expenses really start killing you. That's when some get desperate and start doing stupid things like robbing car washes and poker and soda machines to get a stake going. That leads to it's own problems also...if you are successful at it, you start doing it more and more. Eventually, you will get caught and then have to deal with that problem.

It's a fun way to live for a short while. Much like just taking off for a year and going hiking around the country or world to see things. But, it's not very good for a long term plan.

After those three years, I became a working stiff again. Stayed one until I became disabled. Both ways of life have certain advantages. Neither is totally right or totally wrong way to live. Largely depends on how many toys you want to own, and how easy you want your later years to be. Even with the steady job, it doesn't take much today to lose all that you have worked for, so it's a toss up either way. Working really just gives one a better illusion of security.

Some people just like to be in action, any kind of action. Even playing races to 20 for $50 is a drug that lets some people escape the world. Nothing else matters at that moment, not yesterday and not tomorrow. Just the moment.

It's called a "gambling addiction."

Wow...just wow
Best of luck, I admire your persistence and your passion.
It's nothing I could ever do, I'm much to careful, sometimes that can be a bad thing.
I wish I had your courage, so, as an alternative I will attempt to live vicariously through your experiences. So do well, if you starve, I starve.
-all the best, may the rolls go your way

It's called a "gambling addiction."

It's not always a gambling addiction. I always loved being in action. Yet, if someone asked me to flip a coin for a buck, I would turn it down. That always seemed stupid to me. I always looked at it as hard work, and getting paid for your performance, ....and the adrenalin rush while doing it. Makes one feel alive. I've had factory jobs, and all they do for me is suck the life right out of me. Same 'ol crap over and over and over and over. Gives on a certain feeling not knowing just what the day will bring, but you are ready to face whatever it brings, rather than the same of rut every day of the rat race.

Some love the security of the rat race, for others it's almost a death toll. You have to follow who you are, a security guy, or a vagabond. But, whichever way you go, you have to take responsibility for it both when things are good, and when they go bad.

The gambling addicts are the ones that will bet on almost anything, they are a different breed altogether.

Rhea's doing it for the action and completely disregarding the fact that she needs to make money or end up as a bum.

She can dink around playing $5 and $10 crap as long as she can hold her wad for a score. She, so far, appears unable to do that. Unless she gets lucky or changes her approach..

Although I would not embrace her vagabond lifestyle, hustling pool is where I met a man who changed my life - he was the president of a large company and hired me out of our pool friendship when I was age 20. He supervised my career at the company and trained me. By 30 I had bought my own company and I still own and run it to this day.

Sad to see her go......

We were on the road for about 3 months or so. you form a bond with someone for sure while on the road.
Spending this much time together you really learn what makes a person tick. The good and the bad.

As far as a person it don't get any better than Rhea. Very honest and fun to be around. When 2 people are on the road for this amount of time and both just love the game it don't get any better than this.

I told Rhea before she left that she needed to get a job and also get a part time job for sure at a pool hall. She has come a long way with her game and i saw the last night that she was in action that she has really turned the corner with the attitude and wants to win.

Really wants to win. The drive is finally there.

Wish therewould have been more time but i needed the time to myself right now and there was no holding her back.

At some point down the road we might be hooking up again for sure to finish our work.

When they talk about a reality show with pool, players all over the world would love Rhea.

If it ever happens you all will know what I mean.

Good luck Rhea until we meet up again. Sorry I was sleeping when you left.

How many dinners and bottles of wine would it take to hear the whole story?

I bet it is a dandy my friend.

Best of rolls,

Ken

What a nice post to make about your friend. It says a lot about your chracter as well.

I only stuck with that job for a couple months but I was able to get a real nice brand new car with a GPS.

I stayed in St Louis for about 6 more months before I went dead broke. Then I got a job at a bar as a cook. I ended up having to quit that job after a couple months because the repo people would have figured out where I park my car.

So you stole a car?

I don't think many people on the forums have been on the road but it certainly is an experience, I did it solo mainly for fun scuffling at bars and just seeing the sights of the country. I have also done a little bit of time with players and it was eye opening, it is not all you would think it to be. Life really is about experiences and I don't want to be an old man sitting in a chair somewhere wondering what it might have been like, you got one life so just go for it.

I can tell you how much I enjoyed the read about Rhea. I wish her all the best. May all her paths be bright ones.

Sometimes you just got to say what the hell and go for it

Reah

I have read the thread of your and Genes time on the road and it has been great. I know alot of folks have given thier opinions on what you should and should not do and there is alot of truth in what they are saying . The Road is not a kind teacher and definitely not for everybody. In you though i see a drive and desire that nothing but going out on the road is going to satisfy. Best of Rolls to you and I hope this experiance is all you hope it to be. I will say this experiance is going to teach you a whole lot about yourself and a bunch of it will have nothing to do with playing pool . Best of Luck and Best wishes
