Efren/Earl 8-ball match ----> Earl's rack manipulation

All this rack wrangling in the past several years is pure BS to me. I think pro pool should be played in a manner that takes making balls on the break right out of the equation. The rules should be modified in such a way as to make a safe break the only viable option (i.e. 14.1). The only reason they still do it the way they've always done it is pure stubbornness.

Of course, I realize I'm in a very tiny minority that feels this way.

Sloppy Pockets...Just FYI, there are several ways to pocket a ball on the 14.1 break...banking the corner ball back up table is not that difficult for an accomplished 14.1 player, so it doesn't necessarily have to be a safety break...although it usually is. In that game it should be a choice, not mandatory. The balls should NEVER be tapped in any situation, regardless of what game is played. JMO.

I dont agree.

I dont go to church and heckle the pastor either. While it might make it more exciting, it would be in poor taste and show lack of respect.

But feel free to try it.

LMFAO! You AIN'T gonna believe this, but if you don't I suggest you call Hawaiian Brian's and VERIFY it.

We have a CHURCH that meets EVERY Sunday inside Hawaiian Brian's Pool Hall. I see them every Sunday morning when they are setting up in one part of the place (the ballroom place where concerts are held...bar...dance...nightclub type place. While they are in there listening to the preacher talking about the Lord, they can probably hear me hollering out some serious profanity on the other side.

Maybe the idea is that if you can't bring the sinners to the church, you bring the church to the sinners. I haven't straggled over to their side yet, and they haven't straggled over to play pool yet...but I'm sure they'll come running to get me to sit in if the Pastor gets sick, because I'll have hollered out Jesus, God, etc. in there just as much as he has. I may have to tone my act down a bit though. To be respectful.

Aloha and God Bless

I agree. Not only are the corner balls bankable to the head-end corner pockets, but that head/apex ball is combo'able two rails into a side pocket. That is, if you have the cue ball behind the kitchen in normal safe-break position (approximately a diamond-and-a-half or so to the left or right of the head spot), you can kick hard into the foot rail and back into one of those corner balls, and those five balls on that side of the rack are pretty much a "wired combination" to send the apex/head ball two rails into the same-side-of-the-table side pocket. ("Wired," btw, means "pretty much." Obviously, you have to get the speed right for that apex/head ball to respond off those two rails such that the bank is not too short or long for the natural angle into the side pocket.)

It's not a shot you'll see attempted often, because it *WILL* open the rack and leave your opponent a Marianas Turkey Shoot if your shot double-points / misses the side pocket.

Another one is head-ball into the side pocket, like this:

http://youtube.com/watch?v=OmZh_0HrdWI#t=0m50s

Again, it takes brass to pull this off in a match. Not recommended; not just because it's a fairly low-percentage shot, but you're basically dissing your opponent, and some hot-headed opponents may want to form-fit a cue over the top of your head. :o

I was there sitting behind both players and the rack was to high.when it was spot on efren did not make that ball earl talked to us all nite all while playing...I had a great time

The break and rack don't need to be the deciding factor in any way, shape or form.

Use the magic rack and make it shot apiece, same exact rack for both players and both players guaranteed one time at the table. It eliminates a break and run fest where the player who wins the first game wins the set and also makes each player play both offense and defense. The 10 foot table makes it even better.

Yes, a mandatory roll out would be an improvement in 9 Ball.....then play 2 Foul rules from there. I would rather play '6 Ball' with those rules than 9 or 10 Ball like they currently do. The break and racking doesn't need to be the deciding factor in any way, shape or form. imo

Playing on Earls table by Earls rules.

Seems obvious to me this was set up to be "The Earl Strickland Show". Efren is just supporting actor.

Drama is Entertainment - TV is Entertainment

Idea for a whole new thread: "Does drama MAKE or BREAK pool?" What I mean is, we've all seen how boring pool can be if there is no emotion, no personality, no drama whatsoever, so does a touch of drama and emotion make pool more interesting?

Me personally, I've always thought that pool should have an element of "pro wrestling" to it. Make it more about showmanship and entertainment. We need promoters. Have smoke machines and lasers and fireworks when introducing the players during a major tournament. Let the players talk trash before and after the match, or even between games, like "rasslin'". DURING the match, it's all about business, quiet, respectful, serious business; but before and after is the chance to make it pop, to promote it, to make it more like entertainment.

I can watch some of the best players in the world on the internet. I can go to YouTube and watch three hour long matches. BUT, after about the first hour and a half to two hours, I'm asleep in my recliner, snoring loud enough to wake myself up. It becomes tedious and boring to everyone but the players themselves.

I would consider myself a traditionalist - I like that pool and billiards should be a respectable game played by gentleman; however, we've seen FOR YEARS that trying to force the game to be respectable and convince everyone else that it's respectable is hurting more than it's helping. I work as a producer at a television station, and from my experience (well over a decade), people want to be entertained so that they can forget their own miserable lives for a brief amount of time. If pool is not entertaining, then the small minority of the billiard world who has the stamina to watch pool for hours on end is simply not enough to sustain and maintain the sport we so dearly love. It's sad. It really is.

In my opinion, and this is my opinion only, we need MORE Earls, not less. Not in the aspect that we need more crying, whining, and complaining, but we need more personalities. I'm not promoting Earl, or his antics. We need LESS Johnny Archers. I'm a huge fan of Johnny Archer, I think he's a cool dude, I like his attitude. BUT, watching him playing and circle the table seven times and pick lint from the table repeatedly is an entertainment-killer. I can only watch so much of his matches anymore before I am going on to something else. We need faster play, a shot clock, during ALL matches except the obvious 14.1 and One Pocket matches. That's the main reason why basketball developed a shot clock - teams holding the ball forever, low-scoring games, and bored audiences, which equaled NO FANS AND NO MONEY!

So to wrap up my rant: faster play, more personalities, and more showmanship, in my opinion, would help us grow the game we love. MORE EARLS!

There is Pool, and it's great, although not understood by many. People who really know and appreciate high level pool are a very small percentage of the available TV market.

This is true of any sport, but especially pool. If you want to have a financially viable sport in todays world you must be able to benefit from the Big Money, and that money only comes from one thing. TELEVISION.

Television isn't about Pool, or Football or Baseball or Golf ... It's about, and all about ENTERTAINMENT !!!

It's amazing to me how this reality seems to pass many folks by.

Drama is Entertainment ... This is how, and the only way possible, to build a large viewing audience.

Best example is Howard Cosell and Monday Night football. Prior to Howard and Monday Night the NFL was watched, sparingly by men who understood the game, as they played it when they were young, but those folks simply were not big enough in numbers to make the NFL a TV Financial Monster.

Howard didn't hardly know the difference between a first down and a holding penalty, but it made no difference, in fact it may have been the magic.

He created drama and attracted millions of viewers who knew little about football.

He sold the show to the masses!

Don't want to write too long, but with out drama you have nothing, as in NO TELEVISION, and NO MONEY !! ;)

It's okay to be in a tiny minority ;) We took the plunge and play American Rotation; alternate the break, rack your own and the breaker starts their rack with ball in hand no matter what happens on the break. Eliminates tons of arguing, luck, creates more of a tennis type feel and players are enjoying it.

BIH for 8 ball would make it too easy though, break and shoot with alternating break might work though?

The question remains, if this was for large stakes, would Efren put a stop to Earl's shenanigans, bear down and stomp a mud hole in Earl's you know what? I think so.

Kelly

For large stakes as in gambling I imagine the game would be rack your own.

Great post Joe! I was introduced to American Rotation by randyg two weeks ago in Dallas. What a GREAT game...I love it, and I love what you're doing for the pro-ability and near-pro ability players out there, who hold down regular jobs, but can still compete in these events! Keep up the good work my friend!

But no matter what earl does people will find a way to put him down. So now if he beats Efern everyone will say he cheated. Now wonder he hates everyone.

I actually like it when they are making a ball on the break and have alternate shot. To me, it is like watching a good tennis match and seeing if each player can hold serve. If they don't hold serve and get out, they don't deserve to win and the other player has the advantage. Although I don't play on a bar table much, I truly enjoy watching any pros play matches with alternate breaks on a bar table. I love for them to come down to the last few games and a huge mistake costs someone....

Your analogy makes some sense, and that has always been the type of argument favoring the hard break leading to (hopefully) a break and run. You have the same thing with chess, where white has a slight advantage and usually wins (but not always) when the game is played at its highest level.

However, in neither of these cases do random rolls and collisions affect the outcome of the first move, nor is there any way possible to rig the board or tennis court to favor a win.

The hard break is silly, and emphasizes only one particular shot. Among elite players, a wide open rack and a clear shot on the first ball in rotation is an easy runout 95% of the time. How do you "separate the men from the boys" unless ALL of the playing skills are necessary to win. Kicking, banking, caroms, combos, safety play, pinpoint position play often become unnecessary once the rack is open. I say, let them pick the rack apart until one guy makes a mistake, and then they can open it up and begin their run.

Players like Shane and Bustie who have savage breaks with great control will always have a slight advantage over players like John Schmidt who has a lesser break but is a genius at all the right things aside from the break. This is the real way to play the game IMHO.

That may be so, but the probability of successfully pocketing the called ball are less than the probability of making a legal and safe break, and so that is what you see over and over again among the very best players, who are good enough to keep you seated for the rest of the match if you aren't careful.

You surely remember a while back when Corey started using a hard 1-Pocket break and making a ball in his corner. He almost gave a certain commentator a coronary over that, but he was often able to run out when he did it successfully. I wonder why he abandoned that break now? Could it be because statistically it wasn't the best option, even in a game where you don't have to call the ball itself, only your hole?

I do agree with you about ball tapping, however. Rack the balls with a true and proven rack (Delta Elite, what else?) and let the game begin immediately. Neutral racker is preferred, opponent racks when a ref isn't available.

Well, Joe, you have to know you are really onto something special with your new game. Wish I could get an AR league going on in my home room. All they got is APA 9-ball, and I ain't playing short-rack rotation for points. Great room, but I never go because there's nothing of interest there for me.

Regarding 8-ball, what would happen if you had to call your group before the break (or else alternate the groups), and then give up the table if you failed to make a called shot like during the rest of the game? Alternate breaks. What would be the advantage of busting them wide open then?

Efren was probably more pissed this match was taking away from his chess time!

Yea, I'm pretty sure Efren traveled from Cali all the way to NY to play $10 chess games.

Are you serious man?

You are rite about 1 thing here, earl knows all there ever will be about pool!

The Rack was way off after Earl started telling the ref how to rack.

The ref was racking the same for both of them, what could of been more fair then that?

This non sense with players and racking has to come to an end!

The Ref should of jumped rite on Earl the very moment Earl started talking about the rack.

Ref should of said shut up and play, iam racking the same for both of u guys.

A very high percentage of the fans treat Earl great and always had, its EARL THAT TREATS ALOT OF GREAT FANS OF HIS LIKE SHIT, NOT THE OTHER WAY AROUND SIR!

I've been an 'Earl' fan for a while, but what he did to Efren shows what a PUNK he is. And, the rack guy and steinway should be ashamed for letting earl'cry' his way into screwing Efren like that! His exact words were ' we have to do something to stop that ball from going'! What a PUNK he is. Pool takes another step down into the gutter.
