Mosconi Cup Unpicked Players Bail Out

The 8 were asked BEFORE anyone was cut. Of course they all said they would go. All 8 thought they would make the team. Three didn't and feel different now about going. They spent 8 months of thier life having a 10k-20k carrot dangled in front of them. They were cut...they just want to end it. At least that's how I would feel about it. Johnnyt

A man's word...

I did not realize that they committed to attending, whether picked or not.

Is this the case? Where is this commitment documented?

I find this totally disturbing that the three non-picks suddenly have reneged.
Mr. Wilson's energy, time, knowledge, inspiration, and no doubt, expenses
were expected to be reciprocated by the non-picks to SUPPORT the team.

These three were given roles, albeit as non-players, to contribute their knowledge,
perspectives, and spirit. Heaven forbid they had to do some actual WORK for money.

If TRUE, I have lost some respect for these three players.

I find it disturbing someone would ask such a stupid loaded question on the application form. As if anyone who aspired to be on the team could answer 'Nah that would be a pointless waste of my time and your money.' As if the the team would be picked based on that answer? No wonder we lose!

There was no commitment..

The rest of us do not know the reasoning and it is difficult to accept, on blind faith, a player backing out of a commitment.

In my book it'd have to be a pretty good reason.

Lou Figueroa

Where was there commitment? They committed to being willing to be on the team if selected. They turned down the offer to go with the team as consolation prizes. There was no reneging of a committment.

They would gotten some funds for their effort if that had went to support the team and of course their expenses paid and they would have fulfilled what they agreed to do initially. The would be better off than bailing on the team and not being on live TV even if they were called asistants or coaches. Do you think some other team sports have great players who do not get floor time. Yes so do what you say you will do and you just might reap alot more in the long run than you expect.

Do you think if anyone said "No I wouldn't go" they would still be picked. Maybe only Shane could fade that. Johnnyt

You know Johnny I agree with you on this point. Shane is a champion and is committed to making the game better. If the others would have outworked him, he would have upgraded his effort. If they outperformed him then he would have worked to perform better the next outing. If he was not chosen I think he would have supported the team and been the best asistant/coach he could have been.

BUT

Shane worked hard all year. He performed superbly. He plays better now than he did a year ago. He won another US Open. He is the epitome of an elite champion. He puts it out in every way possible.

Work Hard. Play Hard. Keep your commitments.

I think that is exactly what Shane would do and what Shane would have wanted from his fellow teammates.

Did anybody define "decent sum of money" for these non-players. Its a struggle for almost all pool players champions or not....maybe they had better things to do like earn more money working?

WOW, this is really scraping the bottom of the barrel of stuff to whine and complain about.
Way to go folks, way to keep the negativity flowing strong heading into the weekend!

Im looking forward to Mondays gripe fest about Rodney Morris's shoelaces at the Japan Championships!

Lol, It is funny 'cause it's true.

Whether they agreed to make the trip or not before being selected is only a small part of the equation. I think we all understand sometimes commitments can't be kept for one reason or another.

But it was my understanding Mark made the decision to assemble a group of young players who, while may not have the accolades of some of the former MC members, will be part of a TEAM and play as a cohesive unit foregoing individuality.

I also understand the "charity" involved but I think the bigger picture was missed by those 3 players and what is involved in the long run for them. Definitely saddens me to hear they will not be accompanying the rest of the team to Blackpool.

Granted the titles that were bestowed upon them were cheesy and overplayed and certainly could have been left off but overall I expect they were wanted by Mark and the 5 picks for support and to also gain the experience. Brandon has been there before and had the experience and most likely will return some day but Oscar and Jeremy haven't.
I can't help but feel they lost out on an opportunity.

Either way, I totally respect their decision and wish them the best. However, when they miss that plane I suspect they will have a little empty feeling in their stomach knowing they could have been on it.

These guys aren't rich. I know for a fact oscar will go back to his full time job. I wouldn't be that critical of their decision.

Math tutorial

The losing team gets 20k correct? And the three not picked get 10% of that which is $2000x3= $6000 So the remaining 5 players plus at LEAST Mark Wilson as non playing coach have to split the remaining $12,000...That doesn't add up to me either...I didn't like that they were going to do that from the very beginning.

10% of 20K = 2000

2000 / 3 = 667 each

Double that if it's 20% (=1334 each)

I can see why the "unchosen" might stay home: (1) little $, and (2) less recognition
........ and, (3) pride.

... Brandon has been there before and had the experience and most likely will return some day but Oscar and Jeremy haven't. ...

Oscar was on the 2009 team, but the matches were in Las Vegas rather than England.

I don't claim to know the guys motives or if there were promises made. But I do know that Oscar has an impeccable reputation in So. Calif. I have watched him since he was a kid learning his fathers trade of a table mechanic. They are both top notch people. Pool has been suffering here in So. Calif until recently when Mezz, West State Billiard Supply and Oscar Dominguez along with his significant other put together a West Coast pool tournament tour. This tour has been very successful but at the same time it has been time consuming for Oscar while being a boon for Calif players. Oscar is definitely contributing in a positive manner to pool in California. All of the other stuff at this point is merely speculation.

I totally agree with you. I've read through this thread and all I see is a lot of speculation about something no one really knows about. As for me, I respect the decision of the three guys who are not going to England no matter the reason. I have a gut feeling that they are all on good terms with Mark and the other five players, and support them in the Mosconi Cup. They're just not going. Hey, guess what, it's an expensive trip and just maybe it's all about the money for the added expenses. I do know that raising the funding necessary to send the team to England has been an issue, which Mark has quietly handled. Bringing three extra guys will be a financial burden on someone. Did anyone think of that?

Mosconi 3

IF these players had agreed to attend the Mosconi Cup even if not selected, then that is what they should do.

I 'think' I understand the synergy that Mark Wilson is trying to get going - and this type of momentum takes a few years to build.

I think this is a slap in the face of all the efforts that MatchRoom, Mark Wilson and others have put forth. And actions like this should be considered in future decisions.

What about the efforts that were expended - those would not been necessary if this outcome was known.

I understand the players might have legitimate reasons. WE don't know the details. But on the surface, this is a bad decision on the players part - and once again shows me what is partially wrong with the game in the US.

All of this was part of the foundation and rebuilding process. None of these players are owed anything - and I feel bad about how this makes the US look.

Too much ego - and if I was Mark Wilson, I would consider this an insult in what he was attempting to do. And I think this decision might affect other future decision.

This is my opinion. This is how I would feel if I was in Mark Wilson's shoes. Plus, I feel the presence of these 3 players could have helped the US team. Compare this to a 5 person team event that has 6 players at an event. The sixth player is still part of the team - something WE have obviously not learned yet.
