Mosconi Cup Unpicked Players Bail Out

Yes, it would be like the backup NFL quarterback standing with a clipboard next to the head coach learning and then working hard to become the starter next year. Or a tenth man on a NBA squad sitting on the bench and working towards a starting role next year. Both of the above cheering on their "TEAM" and enjoying the success or comforting their team mates in the times of rough going.

You are correct...why in the world would we expect the other three Mosconi Cup non playing team members to do that!

Wedge

A backup qb, tenth man, backup goalie etc has an actual role on a team, they can replace a starter who is injured or is playing badly, they are not part of a team just to be a cheerleader.
I think it was a dumb idea from the beginning, maybe just a way for Mark to name the 5, while at the same time not "really cutting" anyone from the team.
What would have happened when one, two or three of the 5 starts playing really badly or even makes just one mistake at a crucial time? With the 3 extras in the background, everyone would have been looking over their shoulders. It would have just been awkward.

This is silly to want the 3 non chosen MC players to travel with the team.

First, Mark didnt want Mike Dechaine, who is clearly the #2 american pool player, to be part of the 8 player team. Second, select John Schmidt, who hardly even enter pool rotation pool tournaments. And now wanting the non chosen 5 MC players to travel with the team to cheerlead the team on?

Anybody? What did they back out of?

Been running around my head too. A team is formed of players, who at any point are capable of playing. These three that 'bailed' have no chance to play, so what part of this team were they? Cheerleaders?

Going gives you a chance to witness a unique competitive situation and a chance to support the team, even if it's just racking and getting coffee.

2 of those three have already played on the cup team so they don't need to witness anything. Of course they agreed to stay on if not picked before the cut. Say no and you have to feel it becomes a self fulfilling prophesy. I wouldn't go either as I would just feel like a moochy third wheel.

pool players, "backing out" of positions that never really existed.

It's those "evil" pool players, "backing out" of positions that never really existed.

How dare them not want to do what they've been told to do.....what's next "free will"? What a travesty. ;)

Good question. No one knows what happened for sure. All speculation. Welcome to the AZ kangaroo court.

There's a huge difference between "doing what you're told to do" and "doing what you agreed to do". Speculation here is they agreed to it up front as part of the selection process. If that is true, shame on them. If they didn't explicitly agree to it up front, I personally don't find any negativity with them not attending.

Here's the deal. Only the players, Mark Wilson and his assistants know exactly what they agreed to, what expectations were set, etc.. If Mark Wilson and the Mosconi Cup final 5 don't have a problem with it, that's the only thing that counts IMHO. If they do have a problem with it, chances are those 3 guys disqualified themselves from future Mosconi Cup consideration as long as Mark Wilson is involved.

To me, it shows that [bold]some[/bold] were never really there as a team, but for their own glory.

The only difference between the three guys who did "not" make the team and those who did is that the other 5 did not have to make the choice.

Do you think all of the other 5 guys would go as cheerleaders? If SVB had not been chosen (which makes his being asked "if" he would go anyways in the first place because he was obviously making it) he would be in Japan right now.

It is funny how the three guys "not" picked are suddenly not team players and the guys who actually got picked are now such "team" players. The guys going to England are going "because" they got picked and they "are" actual members of the "actual" team. Had they been told to pound sand (in Mark's nicest way possible i am sure) they would be out and wish the team the best of luck.

I am happy they bailed, the commentary about the "non-playing team members" was going to be uncomfortable as hell for everyone involved. The elephant in the room that the other 3 guys "are still good players, maybe they will get in next year" would be brutal for everyone.

Agreed, if they committed to going, they should have gone. If not, it's a different matter.

They bailed out of their assistant coaching responsiblities! Offensive Coordinator coach, Special Shots coach, Whatever coach.

How is a team supposed to win when their coaching staff won't even show up for the big game? The remaining five players must be heartbroken :(, probably scarred for life. Oh, the humanity!

On a serious note, I think this is better for Mark. It's easier to manage and motivate a five-man team than an eight-man team, especially when the extra three aren't full members; they'd be more of a distraction for Mark and the team.

Mark just didn't want to hurt anyone's feelings, nobody blames him.

I think we all know that Mark just didn't want to hurt anyone's feelings, so he invented a way to "include" them. This was an honorable attempt to "be on the fence," but at the end of the day the players know what the "real deal" is....playing, NOT watching.

The #1 team in America is not the one that Mark picked, however, it's "Show Biz" and we have to respect that.....any pool TV show is better than getting no exposure, too bad it's not on ESPN, it would have a dramatic, immediate positive effect on Pro pool.

John will probably play great and lead the team to victory!

For all any one here on AZ knows Mark is fine with the reason behind the decision for these three players not going. :grin-square:

Mark is a classy guy and if asked I would expect him to *say* exactly that.

What he really thinks and feels after months of team building, only to have three guys bail weeks before the event, is another thing.

IIRC, Oscar competed on home ground in Vegas, he has not been to York or Blackpool. Shuff, I believe, did compete at York.

Bottom line: if you committed to go, regardless of how it'd make you feel, you should go.

If I were Matchroom, and had put out a press release that they were coming -- those guys never see a Mosconi Cup from a player's chair.

They have cut their own throat, and if for no other reason than proving they are honorable men, they should have sucked it up and gone, and played rack boy and gofer as needed to support the team.

Lou,

Your choice of words is completely negative and repetitive. You keep saying "Bail" or other negative words as it relates to this situation and group of guys. You are strongly biased. Your choice of words misstates the situation and paints a picture contrary to the facts as we know them.

A classy guy would have come to this thread and already said it by now. He is the one who put these three pkayers into this position where they are now getting tarred and feathered and Mr. Classy is nowhere to be seen and has obviously chosen to sit back and let it happen.

I would love to see Mark come here and show some class, I really would. Mark? Hello Mark?

Has he ever been seen on AZB?
