Mosconi Cup Unpicked Players Bail Out

It'll be horrible but I'll step up and take one for the team.
Send me to Blackpool instead. :D

truly seasoned champions will do this more often than not.

That's right, the races to 5 provide the "luck factor," and also "pressure factor" to add suspense to the event. At the end of the day it's who wins what games when (that's a twister).....for example team "A" can win 5/1 5/1, then turn around and win 5/4 5/4 - what's obvious is the score is even with team "A" down 6 games......what's not obvious is how many times a player/s will come back from 5/1 down and win a race to 11 - the truly seasoned champions will do this more often than not. 'The Game is the Teacher'

There is ALOT to be said for someone who stands up under the pressure Especially races to 5. U would do well

Why does it have to be that way? Why can't they enjoy their lives and take a nice Christmas vacation free of charge in the UK?

Their all young now and have an opportunity. Gamer pride is stupid in this situation. Go to the UK, act like a movie star, hone your brand, take full advantage of the situation. I'd be the first person at the airport asking if I can use my mileage to upgrade to Biz Class. I'd go and have a damn good time.

Guess I'm not a gamer.

If you're one of the playing 5, yeah, get your movie star on or whatever..... If you're the three cheerleaders that aren't going to be in the grease and on tv, it's hard to be a movie star. It's humiliation.

Its not humiliation when they never had a merit based chance of being selected.

Humiliation comes from failure!

This scenario is no different then being relegated to a spectator and never considered like dechaine, skylar, Bartram and others!

Can you point me to where Mark said it would be based on Merit of play this yr ,
The scenario is certainly different than the players you mentioned as they were never in the equation being one of the 8 players chosen

Got to disagree with that one. Humiliation does not come from failure. If you give your best, 100%, and still fail, there is nothing to be humiliated about. If the 3 players cut dont want to go because they are taking money out of the others pockets, I find that honorable. Saying they should go while taking money from the ones that earned it isn't just charity, its a good definition of socialism.

Unfortunately, there's too much bullshit and most people don't know how to sift through it.

Talking out your ass about what went on behind the scenes without knowing does everyone a disservice...

But, but... I do know.

That was the problem with last years team hand selected by the scorpion.

Did not matter how good Shuff and dechaine and sossei played they were NEVER going to be on the 2014 team that went 11 and 2 or 1???

Again, matchroom dime and they trusted the scorpion to do right and when it was over they realized that it was a big mistake.

Kd

You need to shut your mouth. You have no idea WTF you're talking about. Just tell me this, how in the SAM F%$K do YOU know that they gave their word that they would go if they didn't make the team????Or that that was even on the table prior to not being selected???

:angry::angry::angry:

Au contrarie.

Look, I'm stuck in DFW International after a week in Puerto Vallarta but as soon as I landed my phone lit up and I have voice mails from several folks in the know. I'll return those calls tomorrow. But the gist is that the three bailed after committing and if for no other reason than not cutting their throats as far as some very influential people in pool are concerned, they should have kept their word.

Lou Figueroa

My take on the players not going is that's its ok with all of us. I completely understand not wanting to go. If I didn't make the team it would be very easy for me to say ya I would've went anyway. Truth is that would be very hard to fly to England sit and watch the Mosconi Cup. Now I may have went bc it may have improved my chances of being on next year but trust me none of the players are upset or mad that the 3 "bailed out on us." That's just the way I see it.

Well said.

Lou Figueroa

Lou, YOU say they broke their word! How do you know that to be true? Heaven forbid you're guessing this is the case, because I've never seen that in print anywhere before, and I've been following the progress of this team from the get go.

Not guessing , Jay.

How humiliating does it have to be to be so weak a player that you could/would not earn your way onto the team via merit. But, rely on the good graces of the coach to select you over others equally or more qualified???

These 3 turned down charity and stood on principle. But, the 4 recipients welcome charity with welcomed arms.

Just goes to show you how perverse this board and world is! Oddly enough, the 3 who turn down charity get publicly lynched on here.

Some of you folks need a reality check.

Thank you Justin, just as I expected and said on here a few pages back. Once more, good luck over there bud. Just keep your head down and your belly on the table. Keith used to say that and it worked pretty good for him. You're cut from the same mold, a pool gunslinger!

Justin is a classy guy. I would expect him to say exactly what he said.

If I recall correctly, JA had nothing to do with choosing the team last year, Matchroom (remember them, the people paying to put on this TV show) chose the entire team, celebrating the 20th anniversary.

JA picking Earl, no way.

Merit has rarely been a factor in choosing this team. There have been a few years where a few of the players were determined by points earned during the year, but Matchroom has always had a say in at least some of the players chosen to go.

For support

It's nice to have people there on your side .

Exactly. This is not like a job or the process like a job interview as some have alluded.

This is closer to the Olympics. A chance to represent your country and support your team mates. From some of the posts in this thread I'm thinking that that's too lofty a concept for some to grasp.

I agree with that....just not that failure is humiliating. Not having the guts to try is humiliating. As for the selection process, no comment without educating myself further.

Kid Dynamite has no clue... First learn to read I was defending the 3 and what gives you the right to criticize the players that have made it? They all play better than you and from what I've read you don't know much about pool. Popularity contest ha I should not even say this but Mark told me he was going to look at me 10x harder than other players because he was so worried he thought people would put him down if he picked me thinking that guys like that are on here would assume I got picked just because he knows me well. I think you should go back and read my first response to all this and I never said one bad thing about anyone. I defended them all I said was it would be tough to go and not play but I would have probably went but can't say for sure because I'm not in that spot.

From the get-go, MW was telling everyone that would listen that he was going for a new approach centered on building a team, in the true spirit of the word. Part of that approach was that *everyone* was gonna go to Blackpool.

If these "gamers" didn't want to be a part of that, if they were in some way going to be "humiliated" by going in a non-playing capacity, if they weren't willing to support those guys chosen as fellow players and support their country men in a foreign, hostile environment where every friendly face counts, then they should never have said they would go in the first place.

Certainly your not putting Brandon ,Jeremy or Oscar into world class stature are you because thier not even in that discussion, Mike was not chosen for reasons that go beyond play , and that's because Mark is trying to change the culture
obviously with the players backing out because of thier own personal reasons ,it seams to this point that the right players were chosen ,
Marks looking for team players , not players who put thier personal interests first that's what we had last yr
