Mosconi Cup Unpicked Players Bail Out

Lou,

Based on how Mark Wilson has handled things. The 3 players are probably not holding their breath about being selected in years to come with him as coach!

I could stomach as a player losing a match and not winning my slot on merit. Absent a merit based system of selection, I would have to take it personal just like these 3 may or may not!

Your concern expressed above for their well being and chances in years to come with him as the coach is duly noted. The selection process and the details behind excluding a merit based system in the decision making, only reflects on one person and one person only! Mark Wilson!

I thought a coach was a good idea at first, now I see it was a mistake. They just substituted one Napoleon for another dictator. Long live the king!

Anyone ever stop to think this selection process "HURT" the players in contention? Running around all over the country, not knowing what events they can or can't skip. Not knowing what criteria is being used for the selection process. This BS cost them money in so many ways. It had to hurt their performance at events and increased their expenses. But, hey thats what they get for upsetting the king with their disobedience. Sit shuff, sossei & oscar. Good dog! Bad dog!

I don't blame them one bit!

KD

KD, yes, they have possibly damaged their chances for future MC selection. It is also possible that they have damaged their chances beyond that. Recusing themselves was, IMO, short-sighted. Time will tell.

You actually bring up some very valid points about the players skipping pool competitions where they can attempt to make money as well as stay in stroke, so they could attend the Team USA team-building exercises throughout the year. It is pretty sad for those not selected, and I totally get the frustration each one must feel.

The money is already scarce in professional pool. One must come in first, second, or third place to break event in most tournaments. Most worthy American pro players cannot afford to travel overseas to attend these competitions. American regional tours have banned or established higher entry fees and handicaps of a pro wants to play in one of their tournaments. The American pro player is somewhat of a pariah in this regard when you look at the whole American pool pie.

The Mosconi Cup for the last few years has been the so-called "golden ring" for all American pro players. Ranking points and seeding have been hot topics of discussion. The selection criteria for Team USA changes every year, depending on what's happening in the American pool political scene. I remember how some pro players were pissed off at Mike Zuglan because he refused to seed them in his Joss Season Finale at the Turning Stone Casino. EVERYBODY traveled the country to attend tournaments that had ranking point status, so they could get a shot at competing in the Mosconi Cup.

Now we have an entirely different selection criteria, eliminating the need for ranking points. It is a new concept, one which has its pros and cons, for sure. In this regard, I do understand why the three Americans not chosen have decided not to go, but I also can see the other side of the coin, which looks a little like sour grapes looking at it from afar.

Unless one of the three players comes on this forum and shares their thought process, every single word written about it, including mine, is conjecture.

Last month, it was Barry Behrman and the payouts. Then along came John Barton removing himself from this forum forever. Now it's the three men not selected for Team USA that is the flavor of the week. I wonder what next week will bring. :grin-square:

One last post on this.

We've hit 15,000 views on this and I think all sides have had expressed their views multiple times in every variation possible. With the Mosconi Cup just a few days away why don't we all set aside our differences and get behind the team.

so Oscars and others argument is that he didn't let them duke it out and that he should of picked the five out the gate, well sorry but I think the crying would of happened regardless cause that is what certain characters do.

what to say that them or some other wouldn't of come out and say "HEY, why did he pick me? is it because i lost 1 match more than the other guy?"

what would of been his method for choosing the original 5 out the gate, or is this a case of well since we have something solid to go by we'll just use this.

"my girlfriends birthday? are you kidding me?" what would you of done had you been picked, would that of made it ok to skip on you now so important obligations? I understand the point people are trying to make (except Cleary) but my thing is we're not talking about making a team to go playing in the china open or the predator world, we're talking about playing for you and or supporting you country. The fact that you were picked for selection should mean something and not making the team shouldn't be a death blow.

asking MW to layout his play for picking the final 5 is like asking a girl "hey, can you tell me exactly what a guy has to do so he can be with you and get in your pants". I see nothing wrong with hey listen i'm sorry that you didn't make the team but i decided to go with corey on this one but i would love to have you come to support the guys maybe see if you can help us figure out the break or talk to X since you guys are close, collectively I think our chances are really high with all of our minds pulling together and i'd rather have you pulling for us there than state side, CAUSE THAT'S NO F***ING HELP.

That sounds like a good plan Lie.

Watching the news on Ferguson, and reading this forum, I can't help but see the correlation between the two. In both cases, people have made up their mind long ago on how they want things to be. And, are unwilling to change their thoughts on it for any reason.

Don't know what any of the criteria for picking members was, but still feel compelled to damn the selection process and the person who made the selections. Facts not needed, mind is made up. Facts don't mean a thing, and don't want to even hear any facts. "We" know what we want, and that is just the way it has to go down. Anything else, and someone will have to pay.

No reasoning, no critical thinking skills, no desire for true fairness, just want what you want, and better get it. Pretty sad when one thinks about it.

It's also the same reason JB isn't here anymore. Didn't matter what he said, some on here were out to condemn him as soon as he spoke. And, just like in Ferguson, instead of going after the ones truly causing the problem, this site went after the person being constantly persecuted. Damn the facts, just get rid of the guy that is the focus of attention.

Yes Lou, that would be an ideal scenario, but it ain't likely to happen... The more controversial the issue is, the more views
and testy pro and con responses it will generate !..And, it does not take a rocket scientist to see, that it is usually the same group of guy's who keep the insults flowing.(if the shoe fits,:o)...Regardless of the subject, one guy says 'white', and its a safe bet, that so and so will be along shortly to call him an idiot, (or worse) and tell him its 'black' !

That appears to be the nature of all debates/discussions on ANY forum...Many of the guy's joining in, do so based on old disagreements, with the same adversaries !..As someone pointed out, all it takes is a new topic to set them off, AGAIN, with fans and friends adding fuel to the fire !....I don't see that changing any time soon, especially on a pool forum, where insults seem to be the preferred means of communication. :sorry:

SJD

PS..By the way, I'm speaking from experience, as I've been involved in a few myself. ;)

LATE EDIT;..Lighten up Neil..I would say Ferguson, Mo has WAY bigger problems, than John Barton getting banned
from a pool forum !

Mr 7forlife --

Let's put a couple of points to rest for you and others that are trying to transgress what happened into more than it is.

First - playing for your country? Yes it is a great honor to play on the Mosconi Cup but let's get real. Go to the mall today and ask 500 people if they know what the Mosconi Cup is. If you get more than 2 to say they do that would be incredible. So it isn't like anyone is going to be a huge public Olympic champion, it isn't like anyone is actually fighting and sacrificing for their country. Please stop trying to make this more than what it is.

Second - you pointed out that Oscar stated he was going to stay in the US for his girlfriends birthday and you took exception to that. Let me give you some realization that Oscar is too polite to relay to you and others. IF Oscar had agreed to be a non playing member of the Mosconi team he would have been away from his home from November 21st thru December 5th or 6th.

THAT IS 16 DAYS.

Oscar, unlike many a pool player and this was actually wrongfully held against him, WORKS for a living. He has a responsibility to his father and family. He has bills that he simply can't advise the mortgage office that hey sorry we are late this month but my country needed me to go to England to cheer for my friends and watch some pool. So he could have gone to the Mosconi and IF US won gotten $950 for 16 days of work. If US loses he would have gotten $475. I won't give specifics but let's say he makes slightly more than that when he is working 8-12 hour days at home.

So his girlfriends birthday was again just a polite, made for radio response. If you knew his girlfriend you would know that she does nothing but support Oscar and his love for pool. She would have understood him being away from her for her birthday, if it made sense to do so. Maybe you and others should try supporting Oscar and making sense as well.

Probably funniest thread i ever read..

First of all Mosconi cup as grown and will continue to grow ,Audience viewers up 25% each year.. crowds gone from 100 people -200-300-400-500 for few years.. last year 700 this year 1300 sold out after few hours ..turning thousands of people away.. more Tv channels ,more exposure, it will only get bigger because like Andrew Cleary says it s A SHOW.. and it s a great one. besides last year Usa done good close matches.. Short races anything can happen if they get the rolls...But each year it will get bigger because its a great show great atmosphere and thats what the Public love.. So Mosconi going nowhere thats for sure.. in 2016 I predict the Mosconi cup will be in London bigger venue with 4-5000 people...
USA are Underdogs and people like to see the underdogs win so next year be even more Usa fans to come root there team.. Esp now mark the Capt ..

Regards the players.. I look at Our team Europe and think would any of us From Europe gone to Vegas Mosconi if didn't make the team traveling all that way ?... Absolutely no chance, If on home soil then chance ,But no way any of us would've gone especially when you had a chance to make the team and you don't.. and even more so Under the Circumstances,Don't Want to name players but I'm sure they are Pissed.

Yeah maybe they agreed to go when was a 8 ,Of course months ago not going to say No.. that damages their chance to make the team ,So Course say Yes...

I actually feel sorry for them and two of them must be Devastated didn't make the team Esp after traveling around the world and play much as possible to make the team ,When others sat at home on there ass..

I will also say With Confidence None of the 5 that made the team would've gone either if on the other side.. NO CHANCE.

Like MR CLEARLY said them 3 going doesn't make any difference at all..They will have a team of people there friends Capt ,Vice Capt.. and some support thats more than enough...

Regards Payouts each players get 20k if win.. losers get 10k each.. The Captains Receives his own wage from Matchroom and also a bonus if winning Capt.. they don't get any of The Players money..

Have you been huffing paint your whole life? This thread is just like Ferguson? Seriously? Cmon, really? That's the best you can do? Painting with an awful wiry brush aren't we? Who's who? What side is which? What is the best stuff to huff? Did your brain really tell your fingers to type all of that? Ferguson? Fo rilly?

Exactly right

You know I think you are right even though you are being sarcastic. Also 3 super high caliber elite players who could keep things positive and calm in a rough environment. 3 more men in the corner in a very loud unfriendly venue. Could have been very helpful.

--------------------------------------

Mark has a vision of this event and team pool that is not what is obviously thought of by many players. It would appear that some other players know that having some watch your back is very valuable and empowering. Having someone in your corner to talk with to give you some confidence to remind you that you are a great player. This has real value. I am sure Mark would have actually had the assisting players working in various ways to bring home the cup. He has a plan and he picked a team and he is working to fulfill that goal and to bring home the cup, do it in a positive professional way. Represent the USA and the sport and have a good time doing it.

I feel we have a great team and they are right now prepping to go with events in the St. Louis area. They are spending this time together before the trip working to develop as team. Not just 5 guys with cues Mark is working to develop synergy in his team and they are focused on winning this event.

Hey listen guys, I've been over there more than once for the Cup and I've also been in dive bars gambling. There's a big difference! In England the players are well protected and no one is going to attack you, other than verbally and only between shots. No one yells when you're shooting or anything like that. If they even make noise during a shot, ref Michaela Tabb puts a stop to it. In a bar you're on you own to figure out how to deal with the animosity. One of my tactics was befriending the biggest guy in the place before I ever got started gambling in there. I had other tactics too that don't belong on this thread. Please don't compare apples and oranges. One is a very emotional sporting event and the other can be life threatening. BIG difference!
