Mosconi Cup Unpicked Players Bail Out

Somewhere right now, Dechaine is laughing his (huge) head off at all this dumb shit :D

Lol...good one. Ol MD would make a great bobble head doll! Sorry Mike...had to say it.

I personally don't see what good can possibly come of announcing the "final 8" before picking the actual team.

All of this crap could've been avoided if MW simply picked his team, and then extended invites to an American "contingent" of "player-advisers" or something along those lines...or better yet, make NO announcement re the traveling bandwagon, and just extend invites to players he's grooming for future Mosconi Cups.

I think MW had the best intentions, but this is where theory meets practice and imo this fiasco was avoidable.

The "fiasco" as you call it, while accurate, is only here on AZ, and a manufactured one to boot. I'm sure its not even on the radar of the rest of the world.

Wrestling teams (an individual sport based around a team, much like this event) often have more than one wrestler in each weight class. They can only field one person in each weight class for each varsity meet. Guess what they do? They have a "wrestle off," aka a Shootout. It ensures the better wrestler competes in the varsity match. Does it create hard feelings between the wrestlers? Only for that day's practice. This happens each week.

Having a concrete, play-based way of deciding who would go would've made a lot more sense all around.

The wrestling analogy is the most accurate one I heard to date. While wrestlers are on a team, it is really an individual effort and endeavor.

One thing I can tell you from personal experience, is that the Navy SEALs take this sh*t seriously -- about the team concept that is. If Mark W. is the Navy SEAL doctrine believer he is and if he were to truly wrap his arms around it, those 3 have just "rung the bell" and placed their helmets next to it. If Mark W. will be coming back next year as pro9dg alludes, you can bet this will factor in.

Great analogy!

But, Navy Seal's are not excluded from going through training and must earn membership!

If Seal doctrine is as important as I believe to him. He would never exclude merit from the selection process.

Every Seal respects every other Seal because they "earned it". You ask any Seal if it is OK to be on the team with out enduring and surviving training to prove yourself?

In your example, the coach rang the bell for them and placed their helmet next to the bell.

They wanted to prove themselves and earn it by surviving the battles of training.

Being the best and proving it is Paramount to Navy Seals. They would be insulted if the President picked the Green Berets over them to tackle Osama bin Laden like MW picked players on a non-merit basis.

When you are a Seal you will so any thing to support the mission. Those three guys showed they are nothing and will continue to be nothing.

Schmitty!

John Schmidt isn't looking too bad in tonight's USA Mosconi Team Pre-Blackpool event.

I can't believe I'm reading this sh1t. Your talking about one of the most respected names in the game. Oscar is a solid dude and everyone knows it. This does not change
Buckshot was right.... This is some garbage created in this thread. I'd bet half the ones saying these thing either cannot mentally grasp the hardship this could create or they are being hypocritical . Comparing them to Navy Seals is like visiting a prison and coming out a criminal.

C'mon Sean, we are comparing the mosconi cup team to navy seals? Talk about one end of the spectrum to the other. This is pool, nobody is going to war, nobody is getting hurt or killed.

If they didn't buy into the team concept, sometimes that is the coaches fault, and he didn't sell it, or they just didn't buy it, either way, there are so many reasons to diss someone, but certainly not wanting to fly to another country as a cheerleader with limited pay can't possibly be one of those reasons, can it ?

Some industry folks want it bad enough and willing to help!

I would let them help make it happen. Just what I would do.

SEALs' lives depend on each other. When you're on a SEAL team, you're on the team, going on missions, watching each others' backs.

The Mosconi team will be a team for a few days, then go back to trying to beat each other for the cash, when they actually bother to match up at all.

Piss poor analogy is piss poor

Exactly. 50-51 other weeks a year they would trip each other in a foot race.

Seal doctrine? Palm, meet face.

then why was/is the Seal Sergeant involved & going to BlackPool?
and the $3K fundraiser in San Diego for vets?
while they are trying to raise funds tonight for expenses that are comped 2 wks arrears?
after payday is $10-$20K?

I will say this with certainty, Mark Wilson has created a very cohesive TEAM! These guys are all on the same page and primed and ready to do battle in Blackpool. This will not be a walk in the park for Team Europe, mark my words.

Always a point in any runaway thread where things go full retard.

Navy Seals : Mosconi Cup Team. Lmfao.

Unless you have read mark wilson's book and the entire chapter he has regarding navy seals and special operations training and tactics, you will not grasp this analogy. One of wilson's close friends and pool enthusiast is a former seal and accompanying the team to black pool.

Quote from mark wilson
"This unforgettable experience became the basis of Part III in the book “Play Great Pool.” The process of learning to play pool at a high level is quite difficult; and the techniques used by Navy SEALs to master their craft should help motivated pool players master theirs. I want to inspire pool players with the same spirit that allows the SEALs to excel at their supremely difficult lifestyle. "

Your reaction is understandable if you arent familiar with Wilson's experiences with the Navy SEALs.

The idea to make the stream a fundraiser to the team was mine. If you aren't a supporter then it wasn't for you.

No way I was gonna fade everyone from this thread joining in and making a mockery of the show. We had a VERY positive experience including commentary from Amir Pishdad, Lt. Commander aka Frogman 80, Dr. Don Wardell and Mark Wilson.

It was a fantastic experience for all of us supporters.

Fun night of watching while doing expense reports.

Great work and really great and fun commentary.

Plus, the radio DJ who MC'ed the event was awesome.

Deal or no Deal pool shot game was cool.

Overall a great way to support team USA without breaking the bank..

Sheesh! This thread is still going? Man, oh, man, let's move on to a new topic on the Main Page.

Let's talk trash to Darren Appelton or Dragon Productions.

Barry Behrman is still on the menu.

Panjo sucks, so they say.

How about that Scooter representing American pool in a TV production entitled "American Hustlers"? Wait until you get a load of Tedder's eyebrows. Perfect, manicured, looks like he's more from NYC than Beautiful Dixie.

Not much more anybody can say about the topic of this thread. Let's beat something else to death. After all . . .
