Mosconi Cup Unpicked Players Bail Out

So let me see if I got this right: you don't play, you're not a player, don't got any chance to play, you're not on the team. Did I get that right per your definition because if I did there are a lot of guys wearing Super Bowl rings that weren't on the team and shouldn't be wearing rings like: every member of the active roster; the coaching staff; the entire front office and ownership; the cheerleaders; Injured Reserve and practice squad; even some of the traded players.

Lou Figueroa

Sorry Lou, no sale here. I have a friend (Jesse ?) who played on the taxi squad for the Steelers twice when they won the Super Bowl. He not only didn't get a ring, he didn't get anything! I would bet a dollar to a donut that no cheerleader ever got a Super Bowl ring. They don't hand them out like candy!

The "special favor" was to the players, not to anyone else

Again, our expenses weren't paid, they were reimbursed, there's a big difference. I was okay with the situation, however I was surprised that this was the policy and procedure.

The "special favor" was to the players, not to anyone else. They truly wanted the US to have the best chance possible, however, they didn't allow me to pick any of the players and that may have been a crucial error. I was actually ask to be captain several days before anyone from Matchroom contacted me. Again, my only incentive was to help the team win using whatever was necessary (physically and mentally).

Also, when traveling I still have a $1000 a week expenses whether I'm in Dallas, Hong Kong, or even England. The event is only 4 days, but it takes a day to get there, a day to prepare and another day to get home. I'm glad to have participated and we came so close to winning it was brutal......just one more game and we would have won the cup.....oh well, such is life. 'The Game is the Teacher'

Ok calling Bullshit! A special favor?? they asked you without any encouragement in any way from you?? BS #1
BS #2, Barley enough to cover expenses?? They pay your hotel and travel so there is no expenses except eating and drinking. I believe that the Captain also gets a paycheck for just showing up and more if the team wins. I am going on the low end here but the minimum for the captain is $3,500 It may be double that but I can't remember but it is for sure at least $3,500. There are also some meals paid for so how are you barley covering expenses with $3,500 and not travel or hotel?? You got any habbits that run to that much in 4 days?? Considering you are at the event at least 4 hours each day. I want a freebie like that. Do you make $3,500 every 4 days with no housing or travel at home?? That's all try and explain that.

I'll bet TWO dollars to a donut!!

You know this whole thread is such a joke! I'm disgusted by all the bashing of players who worked for months just to try to make the team. These are all good guys who absolutely deserve the benefit of the doubt, and should be allowed to go or not go as they see fit. We already know that it is no big deal to Mark or any of the team members if the other three guys don't go. They can relate to how it feels about not being picked to be on the team.

What's even worse is that pathetic thread like this detracts from the excitement of the Mosconi Cup, which is one of the premier events in Pool. We really should be talking about the two respective teams and how they match up. My sense is that this will be a very exciting Cup this year, with emotions running high on both sides. I think it will be a great event this year and I'm looking forward to it very much. I wish I was going, but I didn't make the cut either.

"those that bash, dog it for the cash"

Sorry to hear you "didn't make the cut," Jay, you were an asset to the event.

You know what they say "those that bash, dog it for the cash"

Anybody else see Rodney Morris's shoelaces at the Japan Championships this past weekend? Jeeze, what was that guy thinking. How did he expect to win wearing those.
Apparently he should have taken his Shoelace Coach to Japan for much needed advice and coaching.
Congrats to Raymund Faraon, not only can he play...... theres a guy who knows his shoelaces.
Chuck

The 3 are not "on the bench," they didn't make the team. Conjuring up titles for them doesn't change the fact that they have no role whatsoever during match play.

Cleary's analogy is accurate, unless you're grasping at straws.

This is not just to you
But have you guys ever been on the road playing pool ?
Where everyone in the place is betting against you ?
I have and it's nice to have a few on your side .
I bel the 3 would help the team if they went .

I couldn't agree more.

Shit gets real, real quick. In some spots it's down right frightening. And so you need to stick together and watch everyone's back. The best part of being on the road is the adventure of traveling and seeing the world.

This situation is similar but different. There's no fear for your life at the MC. But no one in the place is cheering for team USA. If they didn't make a big deal with stupid titles and would have just left it low key I bet the (3) might have traveled with the team. This is a golden opportunity to travel to the UK on a free vacation. Enjoy life while your young.

But I guess pool players ain't about that life.

Lol. Maybe he needed three more guys setting up drills, coaching on special shots, and whatnot, too

We can never have to many in our corner ,trust me none of these players have even remotely experienced what going to go down in that venue ,, this is a place where they almost kill each other over s soccer game , the experience be it player coach or spectator is going to be priceless , it's a once in a lifetime opportunity I would beg borrow or steal if I was one of those players to be there in that pit

You know I think you are right even though you are being sarcastic. Also 3 super high caliber elite players who could keep things positive and calm in a rough environment. 3 more men in the corner in a very loud unfriendly venue. Could have been very helpful.

--------------------------------------

Mark has a vision of this event and team pool that is not what is obviously thought of by many players. It would appear that some other players know that having some watch your back is very valuable and empowering. Having someone in your corner to talk with to give you some confidence to remind you that you are a great player. This has real value. I am sure Mark would have actually had the assisting players working in various ways to bring home the cup. He has a plan and he picked a team and he is working to fulfill that goal and to bring home the cup, do it in a positive professional way. Represent the USA and the sport and have a good time doing it.

I feel we have a great team and they are right now prepping to go with events in the St. Louis area. They are spending this time together before the trip working to develop as team. Not just 5 guys with cues Mark is working to develop synergy in his team and they are focused on winning this event.

Not a job. Chance to represent your country and support those selected.

In any case, having backed out -- for whatever reason(s) -- it'll be interesting to see how this works out for them in the out years.

Lou Figueroa

Lou,

Based on how Mark Wilson has handled things. The 3 players are probably not holding their breath about being selected in years to come with him as coach!

I could stomach as a player losing a match and not winning my slot on merit. Absent a merit based system of selection, I would have to take it personal just like these 3 may or may not!

Your concern expressed above for their well being and chances in years to come with him as the coach is duly noted. The selection process and the details behind excluding a merit based system in the decision making, only reflects on one person and one person only! Mark Wilson!

I thought a coach was a good idea at first, now I see it was a mistake. They just substituted one Napoleon for another dictator. Long live the king!

Anyone ever stop to think this selection process "HURT" the players in contention? Running around all over the country, not knowing what events they can or can't skip. Not knowing what criteria is being used for the selection process. This BS cost them money in so many ways. It had to hurt their performance at events and increased their expenses. But, hey thats what they get for upsetting the king with their disobedience. Sit shuff, sossei & oscar. Good dog! Bad dog!

I don't blame them one bit!

Bit over the top isn't it? I agreed with quite a bit of what you said till now. You are starting to sound like a ranting lunatic. Ease up.

The shot at MW was a little too much. You may not agree with his methods, but he's the chief. Put your name in the hat for next years captain. Then we can be assured everything is done right.

It's up to the owner, Jay -- varies from team to team.

You are sooooo tired of this thread and yet... you have 16 posts in this thread, fourth highest! That is being more than bit hypocritical.
