Mark Wilson and the US Mosconi team have just concluded their series of public appearances with two highly successful East Coast shows. But before they disappear into 'their time capsule' which will help to negate the effects of jet lag ahead of their Mosconi Cup start next Monday I would like to comment on what has happened to date.

Since being offered the job 10 months ago Mark has always had a master plan.
It was a very ambitious plan and a number of aspects of it were not achieved. Primarily, the main culprit was the lack of financial support. No previous MC captain has had to take on the workload that Mark has undertaken. His ability to stay focused is phenomenal.

He took the players to San Diego and Louisville garnering new friends along the way. The two final shows illustrated that this could have been even greater with a better financial support package.

But what I particularly like is the fact that he has stood firm against the AZ Forum Mafia – the people who come on AZ Billiards to put down his efforts and then lobby for their own choices and to push their own selection criteria.

Mark has analysed every top player’s ability and interviewed all the possible contenders who would seem to fit into his character profile. Where do the others who pontificate on AZ Billiards glean their info that deludes then into thinking that they know better than he does. It is truly amazing how many armchair coaches we have on these forums.

He doesn’t have to justify his selections to anybody. But his trump card could turn out to be his biggest criticism magnet – SCHMIDT. But Mark must have seen a quality that he was seeking in John because he was one of the first names on the original Dirty Dozen list.

Judging by his form this week Mr 400 seems to have timed his run to perfection. Perhaps the three disconnected players were upset that he was chosen ahead of them. They might argue that they travelled extensively to demonstrate their credentials while John just winged it through the summer. But there never was a requirement to go and play in other promoters events to ensure a Mosconi spot. They might also argue that they are better players than John but Mark must have spotted that certain something that outweighed the claims of the others.

All in all he has hardly put a foot wrong The only thing that I might have done differently was to clarify as soon as they were down to eight players, what the financial inducement was.

They could have taken the whole winning team prize money of $100,000 and given everybody $10,000 each.

The remaining $20,000 could have been performance related to the five players who made the team. The players would have felt better about that and they would have travelled to Blackpool with genuine roles to fulfil. They would have ended up as guest commentators, TV pundits, team ambassadors etc.

These real jobs would have added to both theirs and the team’s status. It would also have blooded them for the Blackpool atmosphere. Unless he decides to quit I can envisage Mark seeing out the decade in his quest to redevelop this game. I can also see him continue to preselect players but introducing a merit based system within that framework.

But for the moment he will travel to the UK with a realistic chance of success. When he first announced his squad I was very dubious about their chances but over the last few weeks his theories and his enthusiasm have seen a change in the cohesiveness of this squad. The final blend with John/Corey mentoring Justin/Justin will prove a more than adequate backdrop for Shane to strut his stuff.

The Euros will have noticed this tickling their antennae. That may snap them out of any complacency that may have crept in.

So I think we are in for a Battle Royal, I sure hope so.

Nice imforational post. Answers some questions for me. One thing I can't agree on in your post. John S. won an exibition. Short races that didn't really mean anything after the fact. Team was already picked. No money played for. I know John is a top player, after all he won the U.S. Open...but so did Tommy Kennedy. I hope when the cup is over I am proved wrong. Johnnyt

Doug,

Very well put. But, as one of the biggest critics of the selection process. It should be noted the critics were defending the 3 hurt by the team captain's friends. Friends that tarred and feathered team members!

Based on your post it was financial issues that caused some members to make the decisions they did!!!

Given, his friends did the damage they did to 3 team members. It speaks volumes that he never tried to mitigate the damages.

I find it odd that you focus on his critics and not his lack of defense for the players hurt by his friends.

This topic of the selection process was irrelevant until the character of the 3 members was called into question.

To date, no threads exist about the selection process! None! It only became relevant because of Mark's friends!

He is the coach and choice of matchroom for years to come. But this post deflected attention away from the causes of the criticism and focuses unnecessarily on the people critical of the coach.

You know and eluded to a number of issues created by Mark's leadership or lack of leadership. I and others were expecting a learning curve with any job. Just not someone non receptive to constructive criticism and oblivious to the issues they created.

With Schmidt he has three US Open 9 ball winners on the team. All 3 with Mosconi Cup Experience on foreign soil. Without Schmidt he doesn't have that.... So i really don't see what the problem is with him.

It would go a long ways if some of you stopped all the dramatization. Tarred and feathered? Really? don't you think that is a ways over the top? All people ever said was that they should have kept their word. That is all. No need to keep trying to make it more than it is.

FANTASTIC piece of work, thanks and I hope all is well with yourself.

Doug, this a FANTASTIC piece of work, thanks and I hope all is well with yourself. I still remember and thank you for your support (and cell phone) and hospitality bud. Maybe I'll see you again, not as a coach, but a player. Hopefully there will be a qualifying process at some point and give incentive to some "old folks" like myself to get back in front of the greatest pool audience in the world......right there in England. Happy Holidays my friend and "Best of TOI" to you and all your friends.

Not to mention in the pre party round robin format the other night Schmidt went 5-0 beating all his team mates and Nick Varner. He looked like he was in dead stroke to me controlling the cueball and pocketing well. The rest of the team looked good also. I thnk if the younger guys can fade the pressure they should make a good showing.

Thanks CJ. I have been asked about why I have tried to be supportive of Mark and yourself and not the Europeans. The answer is there is not much I could add to the European scene, they are doing quite nicely. Thank You.

But the game is underperforming in the US and I feel that I can help in some small way to improve that. Mark is not just about being the MC captain. He wants to see an infrastructure that promotes growth in the game and I am tuned into that
wavelength too.

I do have family connections there (my son in law lives in CA and I have grand children in GA). So I am not a complete alien.

Thanks for the compliment and I hope that you are doing a Turkey Trot tonight.

Where were these ?

Two highly successful East Coast shows.

Must have missed them as I live on the East coast.

What do you want? Map co-ordinates, Anything that is not as far as Kansas City is East Coast to me.

I appreciate your help!

Some previously discussed, food for thought. Note, this was suggested long ago.

Like you, I look forward to the improvements in infrastructure. Plus, i make suggestions of my own to help.

Cj makes a good point!

MW had 10 months as coach and a great player like CJ has no idea what is necessary for him to do in order to make the USA mosconi team and represent his country???

No transparency! I am certain Skylar and others would love an answer to that question given the infrastructure being put in place.

Kid Dynomite,

For the most part, I enjoy your posts. I would respectfully suggest that you have missed the mark on this one. It is evident to me that you do not know Mark Wilson. If you did, you would know that Mark is receptive to honest and thoughtful criticism.

To suggest that Mark Wilson has displayed a lack of leadership is false. Mark Wilson took the MC Team to San Diego to learn about team building from the Navy Seals. You may think that this is a misguided tactic. In fact, it might be. However, before Mark Wilson came along, I didn't see anyone that put their thought, effort, and heart into trying to make a team out of guys that are used to "hustlin" for themselves. Mark broke new ground here. That is the action of leader. It is o.k. to disagree with it, but recognize that Mark is putting himself out there and being courageous with his opportunity.

As for the the three team members that were "cut". They knew the deal when they signed up, and they are missing out on an opportunity to support fellow Americans in a hostile environment. If it were me, I would be happy to go even if all I got to do was tell SVB that he made a great shot.

Kollegedave,

Thank you for this post! A couple questions for you to illustrate my point.

1. Would the three guys agree to participate if they knew a merit based system of selection was not going to be used???

2. Would the 3 members travel abroad if they knew it was unnecessary given schimdt added to the team???

3. Mark has the green light to change the team. Why not make it pay for performance??? Win 4 of 4 get 100% win 2of 4 get 50% win 0 of 4 get 0%

4. No infrastructure and rules have been established or published. We are at exactly the same place with a different dictator???

These are observations that leadership is lacking.

With the greatest respect Kid, what are your qualifications that enable you to think that you know better than Mark does in these matters.

Mark Wilson and the US Mosconi team have just concluded their series of public appearances with two highly successful East Coast shows...So I think we are in for a Battle Royal, I sure hope so.

Doug, the proof is in the pudding to see whether this approach will be effective.

It is always important to remember that the majority of people on this forum who weigh on are "results pickers." They don't understand that comparing a race to 5 to a 10 ahead set, for example, is not a good measuring stick. They only remember who won. Results pickers don't get it in the long run.

Pool peeps, especially the American pool culture, are a fickle bunch. If Team USA wins, there will be chants for Mark Wilson to be President. If they lose, be prepared for the Negative Nellies.

What's important to remember, I think, about the Mosconi Cup is that it is supposed to be pool entertainment at its finest. The excitement and the atmosphere and the crowds will be electric. This is the pinnacle of pool for most professional pool players in Europe and USA. They have the opportunity to give it their all in a high-class venue. Best of all, win or lose, they get a payday, unlike other pool competitions. Everybody wins in this regard, the players and the audience who gets the opportunity to watch first-class pool on such an extraordinary level.

I used to let this forum get to me, the multiple-identitied trolls and banned members posting, but I have noticed a trend in recent times that "regular" members are beginning to call these people out, even without moderators' assistance sometimes.

We all have strong opinions, me more than others, but one thing we all have in common is our love for pool. Thanks to Matchroom Sport and you, Doug, for keeping the Mosconi Cup excitement alive for us forum readers. :)

Well, for a weekend warrior. I placed top 20 in 9 ball and banks at Derby!

Due to clinicals I don't compete as much. But, at regional events wins over mcready, mike Davis, Manny chua, shuff & etc.

Southern classic, beat buddy hall banks. Beat slyver Ochoa banks. Beat Eric Durban 9 ball! Beat Dave grau 9 ball, beat Jason Kirkwood 9 ball.

Those are some of the bigger names. I know pool and played juniors with Charlie and max eberle even up still to this day.

The derby finish is under Wilson to find my results. Dennis Jr. The one year she put me as Mark Wilson by accident and never changed it in 2010.
