The most common lies told in a pool room.

For some reason I woke this morning thinking about the common lies you hear in the pool room.

Maybe you can post the lie that you hear or tell  the most frequently?

We could have a vote about which one is the most common.

I know the one I hear from one of my pool room degenerates buddies but I won't say what it is until I hear one of you post it. :D

Joey,

You should compile the results and repost as poll. Here are a few I hear most frequently:

"I can't make a ball right now."

"I haven't been playing any pool lately."

"I can't play you even."

Is it a lie or being self delusional, or not well informed.

I, my friend have a Balabushka...

Most of the time I hear them lying about how much they won. The other night a guy won a whopping $20 and goes on bragging about how he beat so-and-so for $30. Silly

I haven't hit a ball in 6 months
I can't win but I will try you with 9/6 and the breaks
I don't gamble anymore

I love the railbirds who claim they "used to be good." Or, "back when I could see."

That guy who goes 2 and out in a tournament and starts complaining,
"I just can't do tournaments, man, I need to have money on the line to focus."
Your entry fee isn't money?

"haven't been playing"

"I haven't been playing for . . . ." A line I use since it is true but it is always met with the fish eye since it is one of the most common lies in pool!

Always funny, sitting at the bar a player hasn't lost a match-up in twenty years, trying to match up they can't make a ball!

Of course my favorite line is that I did put myself through college playing pool, all three weeks of it! I discovered I wasn't ready to go back to being a student after four years of working, owning my own businesses, and playing pool.

Met a fellow in a pub/pool hall awhile back, maybe two whiles. He told me he owned a Ballabushka, handed down from his father. He didn't play with it, kept it in a vault since the value was a million or two. Seemed George only made two cues in his whole lifetime and this was one of them. He had a navy uniform on so I respected the uniform.

"How do you match up with so and so?" "He gives me the lemon crush and ten to one on the money"

Of course there is the ever popular, "I played much much better when I was younger."

I also get a chuckle out of all the people that beat Willie Mosconi, most of whom weren't born in time to play him and can't make a ball in the ocean anyway.

One gag I used was going into a place and having a beer or two. Then I would be talking to somebody and loudly proclaim I once beat Wally Mosconi! Got action a handful of times using that line!

Eventually somebody would usually point out the name was Willie Mosconi. "Yeah, but I played his cousin Wally. Wally doesn't play nearly as good as Willie!"

The pool hall is the perfect place to baffle'em with BS if you can't confound them with wisdom.

"I need a spot." - It's a lie, but I always ask politely :)
"You play too good for me." - Lies... All Lies
"I'll bet a thousand!" - Chumps trying to get out by betting bigger than they have.

I think the numerous myths often perpetuated in pool halls certainly qualify as "lies." As you know, the top 100 are listed, along with the corresponding truth, here:

The ones where the person saying it doesn't know it's a lie are my favorite. For example:

"Come on, stake me in this game! He's offering the last 5 and the breaks, rack my own! I can beat anyone playing like that!"

Any variation of that is common. I've seen a lot of money lost in games people couldn't lose.

Some guy telling you how much money he makes playing pool......while he is trying to put the bite on you.

Playonepocket,
If I posted all of the lies as a poll, it might shut down the entire AZB Main Forum. :p
