An Open Discussion about an improper Banning

Punter, that was a good analogy of the Moderation seeing that you put it in that context.

Bruce had the power of God and found out that it wasn't that easy to do God's job.

I believe that is what Dave was saying in one of his posts. Walk a Mile in My Shoes Someday.

Of course, I would wait until Dave wore his most expensive Nikes, and then, I would be a mile away and he couldn't catch me.

Earl Strickland and Mike D. will be posting on "the Mental Side" of pool

Allen Hopkins will be posting about how to run trade show operations.

Johnny Archer will be posting about his experiences with completion and team events.

Rodney Morris will be posting about how to maximize your power stroking techniques

Dennis Hatch will be posting about health and fitness and how it applies to pool

Sky Woodward will be helping everyone with their banking and bar table skills.

John Schmidt will be in charge of all straight pool threads.

Oh, yeah, and Rob Saez will be posting about his
secrets to creating (outside the insdustry) sponsorship packages.

I know Punter. That's funny. I love that movie too.

But see, we started already. Lets not try to hurt anyones feelings. Watchez already mentioned that he threw his hat in the ring.

Moderators haven't been picked yet so he is still in the running as much as the next person.

That's why I said, Pretend that you are a Moderator for one post and lay down the rules.

Watchez and myself have never PMed, so we don't know each other, yet I still like the majority of his contributions on AZ.

Ban or Bail / Similar Outcome - We lose

In the roughly 4 years I have been on this site I have received one warning via PM - which I didn't feel I deserved, and certainly felt baited...but received it non the less. Luckily for me a long time member PM'd me around that time and "schooled" me on who got preferential treatment on this site, and most importantly winning an online argument is meaningless.

The JB final ban, I was not online here during that time so I don't know what he posted to get him tossed off, so when I searched to see why, everything he ever posted was deleted so I have no idea. Yes Barton would post some outrageous stuff on here and had been warned and banned multiple times, but when he got his one pocket match that he wanted, people couldn't wait for him to post and to comment on those posts either positively or negatively...but they wanted to read what he had to say and wanted to watch that match badly. Either way - warranted or not he's gone. But when he provided entertainment leading up to the 1 pocket match...even when he posted words and tirades that would warrant a ban, it was absolutely overlooked.

Russ & Wedge do not post outrageous stuff on here and they have been banned while much more aggressive and demeaning posters and baiters seem to skate free...such is life.

IMO more important then the warnings and bans, are the posters who have simply stated they'd had enough and are now gone...JAM and Mark Griffin. Two pool insiders that are now lost to this site that just felt it wasn't worth it to post on here anymore for whatever reason. Are the forums better with them posting or without?

Also the pro's who have been driven off this site by idiots. Can't remember the last time Schmidt posted on here, and Appleton's last post was simply to defend MW and the American MC team as the captain and team were getting reamed on this site, and in a post before that he had to defend himself on the charge of not willing to gamble on himself...so he stated anyone wanting to come to the UK they could play for 20k+...doubt anyone took him up on that offer, but point is when he posts (rarely) its in defense of another poster challenging his game/heart/gamble.

To the people that drive off the games insiders and pro's and you know exactly who you are...congrats and great job...you've made this site more enjoyable for all of us.

Thank you for the reply

I can tell you he is very remorseful and realizes what he did was unwise. He told me what it was and I agree that this should not to be taken lightly by AZ Billiards.

Tell you what, we'll check back with you in a month. I don't think there will be any further issues with him and generally that is the point.

Who, btw, will be my first phone call if I get the hammer. :o

You are my boy blue. We don't need to PM.

What you need to do is go back and read Mr Wilson's posts and the tone of all of them. The rules are fine for 90% of what they are. It's how they are moderated is the issue. I also have a few PMs from Mr Wilson I could share to further illustrate the point if I so cared to.

Again - you need to fix the process before you can fix the site (and posters). Google 'fixing the process not the person' for lots of great articles and examples. I could post some of it here but to many it would go over their head or go unread. But I didn't come up with this solution on my own. This is a tried and true method used by some of the most successful organizations in the world.

Your boy Mr Wilson needs to comprehend the method, accept it and USE it or he should.......

The ban should be temporary since the infraction was minor.

It's just a ''hiss/piss'' moment in time....we ''all'' have em. sometimes there's two sides, or four ;)....but who makes the rules?....saying this situation is definitely more important than  therefore....I'll posture up :thumbup2: Thumbs Up that is !! I stole the cookies from the cookie jar.

We have roughly 25 new users a day. So you are wanting me to check out the IP address on every new user?

And it is extremely easy to fake an IP address. It happens all the time.

Apparently the only way to get someone to compare the IP addresses would be to report a post, too much to ask a mod to actually figure things out on their own.

I write security software for a living. Trust me when I say that would be a huge waste of your time.

I question the motive of one of the two "I'm done" users, and suspect that they will both be back before long.

It is another case of "if user xyz is allowed to say things that I don't like, then I am gone". How do we determine which users are more important than others? And what precedent does that set when a user can have another one banned?

Mark is still here, he posted recently.

JAM is gone because she took offense at Spider's cartoon of her and Keith. On the one hand, I say that after all these years on the internet she should have developed a thicker skin. I mean, after all, the last time I looked Spider has three or four cartoons of me, along with her's, in his sig block.

On the other hand, if we want to talk about "button pushing" and "instigators" Spider would be Exhibit A with his avatar and cartoons that show up every time he posts.

Jennie was told that we would remove the link to the cartoon if she was offended. I wasn't sure if she would find it amusing or be offended.

Lou, please don't use the word instigator when referring to another poster.
There is not a better example of an instigator on this forum than yourself. Sig line or not there's no worse offender than you that exist on this forum

imho

I do like the 3 foul idea. if a member goes over the line, but not something egregious, they should go on one foul. Step over again, they go one 2 fouls and if it happens again, 3 fouls and they get a vacation.

Admins can determine how long fouls stay on a members account - maybe they can automatically be taken off with a month or two of good behavior.

Parameters for length of bans can be determined by admins.

The 'fouls' a member commits can be displayed under their avatar and user name, maybe below their rep in the form of three empty circles that get filled in with red as fouls are commited.

If conduct is deemed to be egregious then, of course, they can be given all 3 fouls for that behavior resulting in immediate ban.

People like myself, the true angels of azb, we will be given lifelong immunity, banhammer proof. :grin-square:

for the record, this is our virtual pool room and, as such, I expect there to be some good bad and ugliness, just like at our real pool rooms. I'm perfectly accepting of the rawness and grit, up to a point.

And just like in our real world pool halls, when someone goes way over the line with bad behavior and is shown the door, so should it be here in out e-pool room.

again, all imo.

best,
brian kc
