I spoke with Greg Sullivan , the gaming commission is not happy with someone winning an award for gambling, The gaming commission considers this illegal, Harrahs Casino is concerned because it could cost them their licsence ! There will be a presence of the gaming commission so be careful with your side bets, I don't want to see any of us get our money taken or go to jail or shut all of DCC! -- THANKS AND PLEASE SHARE THIS POST !!! real, a move or memorex

Pretty common at casinos. They don't want 1cent bet that they're not in on. Not to mention the possibility of any improper actions on the part of the players. Need to keep on the down low and pay-off in the bar or elsewhere.

First I heard of it. And he only tells one person about this? I guess if you tell everyone too early some fans and players won't go. Johnnyt

From what I have seen on videos, pretty difficult to keep that on the Down Low.

Specially if they are going to have a presence in the action room as mentioned.

Pretty much ends that one doesn't it, unless they can figure a way to make it Hush Hush.

With someone like Scooter, ricocheting off the walls woofing, it can be pretty obvious.

Now if they put a sports book in the corner and figured out a way to charge some juice................All would be golden. As long as they get their cut. Damn.

Actually, this message is passed around at each DCC.

It is common sense that the casinos don't want their customers, gambling on things other than their table games and slots.

I think the casinos are smart enough to realize that if one of our guys makes a score playing pool, it won't be but minutes after him winning that he will be betting all of his winnings (and more) on craps or one of the other table games. It happens every year.

Still, it's nice that Richie is passing the word. You go Richie!

Not the first time

Not the first time i've heard this, Its been whispered about ever since they moved it to the casino.

Yes, it has been passed along for a few years and everyone SHOULD know it by now, but saying the gaming commision will be there strong is a new one to me. Why would you have this Johnson City type tournament held at a casino...hello! Johnnyt

This to me is friggin hilarious. We don't want people gambling in the CASINO!

The gaming (read:gambling) commission doesn't think its right for someone to win an award for gambling (read:gaming). So they condone "gambing" (coining that word now) by building the casino and creating an entire department of the local government to regulate the act BUT giving someone an award for being good at it is illegal? How is winning an award for ANYTHING illegal.

As others have mentioned... The Casino isn't getting their cut and the GC isn't getting their cut so they are all butthurt. I wonder if they crack down at people during the boxing matches making bets with each other as they watch the fight. I wonder if they cracked down on all the guys side betting with their friends on the playoffs this weekend?

I said all this as someone who really doesn't gamble much at all. Couple bucks here and there on games when playing with people I know its a toss up between BUT it really ticks me off when they would make a claim of the sort.

I guess one can pooh pooh this but it would seem to make a lot more sense to take it seriously and be on the alert. I think the implication is that the gambling on pool is better kept hush hush to the greatest extent possible.
Why not try to accommodate them?

Could you imagine getting arrested, and explaining to folks what it was for?

Um, yeah, I was at a Casino, and they arrested me for gambling. Yeah, right, and that's about the time folks start thinking you are hiding something, something creepy ;)

Sigh...

Okay, all... here's the deal. The gambling between two players isn't an issue. There are two other issues that are being highlighted this year. One is an old issue: side bets. The "two man tournaments" with respective monies in the middle has been accepted by the Casino. But the side bets are what they've been coming down on since side bets in of themselves is the type of gambling that the Gaming Commission is supposed to be managing. And this isn't the first time the side betting has been warned against.

The second issue is the Action Award and the great article from last year's DCC. The fallout from the article was the Commission's renewed look at the side betting, the glorification, and the advertisement of an award winner that generates side betting action. It's the Action Award, unfortunately, that has heightened the awareness.

Take a good look at what Richie has said. "The Commission is not happy with someone winning an award for gambling." It's the Louie Roberts Action Award, the fact that the winner of this award gets his picture hung above all the other champions, recognizing that the winner generated action. Side action.

So, it's not just "one person who's heard this." It's a big deal and people in the background on this Award and entire event are trying to figure out what to do about the Award as well as how to keep the "glorification of side betting" to an absolute minimum to not piss off the games keepers. We all know the DCC is still going to be an action zoo. But, the Commission must feel that the article was a bit of an "in your face," even if that wasn't the intention.

Thanks for reading.

lol................

It is not gambling, it is a pool tournament.

Two players playing for stakes is a contest of skill and no different than a tournament(only with just two entrants). Two people on the rail betting on the outcome is gambling.
edit:
I see Cornerman said it first and better......so Yeah, what he said.

It's pretty obvious why this happens isn't it? All big winners at the casino are reported to the IRS. You do know you have to pay tax on winnings right? You think that under their roof they have this going on without violating the terms of their gambling license? Of course not...Make the bets at Denny's, and settle up at later at IHOP...like grownups. Of course that's asking a lot of pool players.

Kinda makes one miss the 'ol ExecutiveHotel days. I went in '07 and there was gambling everywhere. Pool, cards, three-card monte and the dude throwing the cue-ball three rails and making balls in his hole. I know they needed a bigger, safer place but the Exec was pretty cool.

Sounds like a good argument for the judge. Think he will buy it if the casino and the Commission are complaining?

The Action Award Committee is still weighing out options on what to do with the award this year and how to deal with the blatant side betting. Unfortunately, this thread wasn't the way the Award Committee wanted to blurt out the potential issue. We have enough headaches without having to answer some of the ... inquiries on this thread.

But to the question of "why is the DCC at a casino?" Simple... the Casino wants it there. They have been supporting this tournament for many years, and they want to continue to support it. But, it comes with rules on their end.

For those that haven't read the Grantland article by David Hill on the DCC and the action that it entails, here it is:
