Current top 25 for USA Mosconi Cup Team

Matchroom has previously announced that they would use some type of points system for selecting 3 of the 5 players: “Players eligible for Team USA, who finish in the top 32, will be awarded points on a sliding scale.” We now have four events completed, but no complete description of how the point system would work. So I thought I would make a guess.

I got the place finishes of American players in the top 32 of the USBTC 8-ball, 9-ball, and 10-ball divisions and the Derby City 9-ball. To award points I simply subtracted their finishing rank from 33, so if they placed 1st they would get the max of 32 points, but if they placed 32nd they would get 1 point. Then I added up their points and ranked them here. I have no idea how they'll actually set up the points, but maybe this will be close.

I made guesses about a number of players’ nationality and eligibility. I didn’t count Jayson Shaw because, although he lives in the US now, he is not a US citizen. I counted Oscar Dominguez but not Ernesto because my understanding is that Ernesto is Mexican but Oscar is American. Please let me know if there are any mistakes on that and I'll change it.

I found the finishing places from the tournaments here:

Sorry I am a little confused and that's not on you BRussell. Just me being a little simple. Your opening line is "Matchroom have announced a point system" Where is it? why are you guessing at some of the info if they have announced the system?

They announced they would use a points system, they just haven't described it in detail. I didn't mean to suggest that they just made a new announcement - I edited my post to try to make it clearer.

The Derby City website made a mistake with the finishing lineup for the 9 ball. I came in third not Alex Lely and my name isn't up on the list at all. I will call tomorrow and get it corrected in case that is the list match room will go by.

Huh. Yeah that Derby City list seemed kind of screwy anyway. I'll change your points for that.

Alex Lely is a former Mosconi Cup Team Captain - for Europe so I guess that rules him out.

Also, Amar Kang has played in several Matchroom events - representing India.

I comend you for your efforts but I think that some of the following might need to be factored in.
Points Tariff are likely to be a lot lower than the 32 to 1 spread. More like 10 - 8 - 6 - 4 - 2 -1.
There will be variable tariffs with the controversial barbox events receiving a lower tariff and 9 Ball events
receiving premium points. These figures are not facts but are based on past policies.

I find the whole system a little flawed. Serious contenders could find themselves being matched up with a Filipino, Asian, Jayson, Mika, Dennis while his rival ends up with a couple of short stops.
Why not use these figures until about August and then use them to compile the field for the US Proessional 9 Ball Championship which is restricted to 'eligible US players only.

It could be held on the dates currently held by the US Open. The four semi finalists maje the MC team and the fifth player could be the Captain's Pick.
This has the added advantage of enuring that these are the 'in stroke' players who go to the MC table a month later.
I am sure that the field would be filled up by prestige rather than prize money as players battle it out for Mosconi Cup Glory

I doubt the points distribution will be simple arithmetic progression more likely geometric progression like ranking points distribution in WPA BCA
So 1st may be more few times more then 2nd place points etc

Obviously still imperfect system of selection - all these does is choose top players in slight long races (like race to 9) instead of MC race to 6
Should really have few leagues/ tourneys race to 6 amongst the top 10 of 20 players and top finishers gets into team. I doubt Shane would make the team if that was case but the team selected will be MC ready :D

Ironic that dechaine doesn't show up on the list.
Go figure.

Yes I found that interesting also , he's a good BB player seen him many times in action at the SBX ,
One player not given much thought who has been there before who might be a dark horse is Mike Davis he won the penn state just won another tourny will 113 players ,
He's a big time grinder and a class act might be worth keeping a eye on

How can you keep an eye on Mike Davis when he has zero points in 40% of the events so far? I respect that Mike is a great player with a superb history of winning events. He would have to win 2 out of the next 6 events to make a dent (well I will admit that is hard to admit since we don't know the point structure yet. It might be 4,000,000 points for first, 10,000 points for second, and 100 points for third.)

Go figure.

He finished out of the money (tied for 76th) in the DCC 9-Ball (losing in Round 3 to Imram Majid and in Round 4 to Skyler Woodward) and did not enter the USBTC's. So no points for him, so far.
