Genuine Concern Over AzB

I am always surprised at the sheer number of formerly reliable characters who seemingly disappear overnight. Some of our best and brightest super-stars just go away, ie akaTrigger.

I agree the site relies too much on attracting new blood instead of retaining the old and when some of the good old reliable posters get banned, they get pissed off and just stay away. I guess to others, forums and the game get old.

everytime you say something sensible you get kicked out. last time i got kicked out for two months, for arguing with barton and for saying some chick who shoots pool is ugly, who Ive met too, i didn't get kicked out. for telling someone that their wife is fat and inbred, I was just guessing, but apparently I hit a nerve and the guy reported me. OUT!!! the guy had like 60 posts and no itrader. LOL. i guess the little btchez that sign up can't take getting their feelings hurt. oh well. ill probably get kicked out for this post. lol. I come on once a month just to see some nice cues and for the retarded prices morons are asking for. 1000 for a plain jane.lol. I have about sixty books and youtube videos, theres little pool to talk about.

There has always only been about 2 dozen that post daily on here. Probably 6 daily posters have died in the last 5 years. Also, One Pocket. Org and FB have taken a lot of posters away. Any new blood that comes on AZB gets run off by the know it all's that can't run 10 balls in 14.1 or 5 in rotation. Johnnyt

Glad to see Tramp Steamer posting. His humor is fun.

For me there were (are?) too many feuds and too much antagonism. It just wasn't fun and interesting anymore. I come back to see what is going on but rarely post as I just don't need the aggravation.

I was thinking about you not long ago, wondering if you even lurk anymore. I used to like reading your posts in particular your thoughts on some of the psychological aspects of the game.

There was a thread on confidence not long ago that I would have liked to have read what you had to say about it.

There has been about 50 postings this morning. If you go on other forums that is quite a few. Even on this forum the ask the cuemaker may go 24 hours with no postings. People may tend to respond to newer subjects and those topics stay at the top.

I responded to this topic but it is unlikely I will have any more to say on the subject. Meaning I may sign on again later but not make any posts unless I actually have something to say., I may have said what I have to say.

By the way, look at what is staying at the top, a BS thread that has nothing to do with pool anymore, just people arguing about nothing.

You dont say?
I must have missed that one. :D

Yep, I am on way to other greener pastures also. Too many threads are being hijacked by the negative posters. If the post does not pertain to their style of playing, then it gets torn apart. I follow CJ and his TOI technique of play. I won't even post in his threads because it will just be chewed up and spit out.

I don't understand why the Mods let this hi-jacking go on for so long????

Thanks, Joe. Very kind.

Our only option, in my opinion, is to sit back and see how this thing plays out. I know the girls are gone, that's for sure. I've noticed less of JoeyA around here. He was (is) not only a prolific poster, but a damn good one, as well. Jay seems to be off his feed a bit, too.
Look at the times we're living in, though. The world is about to blow itself up. The dollar is nearing collapse. All NPR stuff I know, but what goes through NPR comes through here, as well. This is not a virtual world here on the main forum. I hope the time doesn't come when someone quotes Gordon Lightfoot, when he sings. "At seven AM the old cook came on deck, saying fellas it's too rough to feed ya. At seven PM a main hatchway caved in, he said fellas it's been good to know ya." From: The Wreck of the Edmond Fitzgerald.

Here's my loose change, FWIW. :)

When this pool discussion forum first began to gain in popularity as a networking place for pool peeps, I was invited to post here by Smorgie. Keith McCready, my other half, received a very kind invitation to have his own sub-forum in the Ask the Pro section. Both of us were traveling the tournament trail, attending two, three, and four tournaments every single month. Keith was also asked to be a contributing writer for InsidePOOL magazine. Pool was very much a part of our everyday life.

I dove into AzBilliards full force, posting numerous photos I took at tournaments. I also provided daily updates and trip reports, which were quite popular at one time. We were the good guys in pool. Everywhere we went, people were friendly, nice, and warm. We had a blast here on AzBilliards and a blast at the pool events. It was fun.

Then came an army of attackers. Some condemned Keith's InsidePOOL articles, stating Keith didn't write them, that they were a sham. Keith was proud of his articles. I was Keith's editor, of course. We were a team. The words written on this forum were so hurtful that we quit writing for InsidePOOL. I realize today that I should have considered the source, but that's water under the bridge now. What was once joyful for Keith and myself was ridiculed and criticized to the point where we didn't want to do it anymore.

As well, though Keith was honored to have his own place in the Ask the Pro sub-forum on AzBilliards, there were some hurtful words written about him here, and though it truly didn't bother Keith, as he knows who he is, it bothered me immensely.

In the early days of AzBilliards, when this forum was being built up, I felt like I helped paint the walls and contribute to the construction of it with my contributions. I had fun doing it, too. Even today, when I am asked for a name on a photo a tournament happening I wrote about, I come here to search. It's like my own personal pool archives.

Most who know me are well aware that I get paid to put people's words into print; in fact, I'm certified to do just that. Keith would speak what he wanted to post on AzBilliards, and I would type verbatim his spoken words. Then we were both accused of either me pretending to be Keith or Keith was too dumb and stupid to know how to post on the Internet. This, too, was hurtful. In fact, there were times I even took photo of Keith holding the date to show that it was him actually posting, with me typing his words. I never once posted under Keith's forum name without Keith standing right next to me. Never!

Those who dislike me and my forum persona soon started going after Keith, writing mean-spirited and hurtful words about him, all in an effort to hurt or anger me. In fact, there was one incident in which I felt the person attacking us was mentally or emotionally unbalanced, and I most definitely feared for our safety and our lives.

Now we come to those who say have a thicker skin or quit your whining about this forum. Well, until you're on the receiving end, fearing for your physical well-being, you'll never know what it's like to be on my receiving end.

As well, to witness someone I love very much not post here anymore, who actually enjoys interacting with fellow pool peeps, it is a bummer for him, much more so than for me. Anybody who has ever met Keith in person knows he is a people kind of guy. He enjoys talking to everybody about pool -- a youngster, a league player, a social shooter, a pro player, and railbirds. Keith still reads AzBilliards every day, yet he can't post anymore because of all of the above. It ain't worth it.

AzBilliards will always have a special place in my heart. Some of my finest writings are on this forum, and they can't take that away from me.

Two distinct entities:

No one should confuse good drama with trolling and pot stirring.

The kinds of drama threads we used to get were like fuel that drove az.

I'm talking about threads like when Dippy Dave air barrelled Frost and Billy and the tush hogs and stolen car and all the other crazy shit that surrounded this event.

Or when "Dildo Hair" climbed out the bathroom window in the middle of her match that wasn't going well with OMGWFT. It was amazing - "dildo hair" became google-able, part of the vernacular.

The DYD cue, the excitement during the contest, then when it became Bill Stroud firing his air barrel...

John vs Lou starring in "The Hassle at The Castle" - yes, I just made that up. :)

These, along with thoughful, informative, helpful and resourceful posts were the life-blood of Az.

When we have great posters like JoeW (a few posts above), who choose not to frequent this site because of a mean and antagonistic atmosphere, then something is wrong.

Drama can be a great thing; often a reason to look forward to returning. Good entertainment.

On the other hand, the antagonistic, mean-spirited activity only seems to be enjoyed by those who are regularly slinging it. To most everyone else, it's not even remotely entertaining.

For what seems to be a growing number, that sort of nonsense appears to be a reason to move on.

best,

I was one of the thicker skin advocates. But I certainly meet your qualifications for speaking up, having received my share of online generated death threats and intimations of physical violence. BFD.

Also like you I used to contribute more with writings here like trip reports, product reviews, original stories, and start threads on what I thought to be interesting topics. I don't do much of that any more either. That's how I've chosen to deal with some of it

Regardless, I don't moan about the attacks -- I deal with them and you should learn to also. I know I bring some of it on myself because I have an ego, I speak my mind, and I don't suffer fools well. You bring some of it on yourself because you see things happening that don't exist, complain about them incessantly, and draw negative attention that way. People get tired of the whining and twisted logic.

JAM, this place is what it is. You need to change, not the group.

"The Hassle at the Castle?!"

Not bad, not bad, Brian.

But if I may be so bold I would humbly suggest maybe: "The Wrassel at the Castle."

What did it for me is the unfairness of the modaraters. How there is a protected group of people that can say and do anything.

So, for me it is because of the way this site is run at the upper level.

I don't need to change, Lou. I like me just the way I am. :grin-square:

And I'm not changing the group. I don't really want to. It has evolved into something that is just not my cup of tea anymore, truth be told.

I'm not you. I don't like being physically threatened or attacked. Maybe it's because I am a female and can't defend myself against a mentally or emotionally unstable person. Maybe I don't want to feel like I need to carry a concealed weapon if I ever go to a pool event again. I don't care to fear for my life because I post on a pool forum. That's the difference between you and me.

People get tired of you writing incessantly about your opinions of pro players, but me, I just read it and know that's how you are. I'm not threatened by it. I don't feel like confronting you to let you know what my opinion is about your opinion. It is what it is. This is your favorite pastime on a pool forum, it would seem, to condemn pro players. I have never been threatened by you, FWIW, and I hope you have never felt threatened by me, either. :p

I wrote my opinion on this thread. I don't need to change. I just quit hanging out here. This forum will never be the same for me, and that's okay. I have moved on. I felt compelled to share my thoughts in this thread, since I have invested about 12 or 13 years of my life to this place.

I hope you continue to enjoy your AzBilliards experience.

Ya know... you can only read so many threads that devolve into "I've been playing this game for 40 years and beat pros and you come here and we'll play for $1000 a set and see who's right..." bullshit before you start looking for something better to do.

I believe what you are going to find is that in general forum use will decline not only here but elsewhere as well.
If I am not mistaken they were discussing traffic on JimboArmy slowing as well.

Social media is still growing. Groups in places like FaceBook allow people of like minds to gather while at the same time blocking whoever they choose.
Meaning that and using the old high school terminology. Cliques are forming on FB for the pool community.
Even though we all have a common interest the community itself is splintering. There is already a large array of billiards related groups there. At some point that also will reach critical mass and many of those groups will go inactive as people will tire of having to go to 10, 15, 20 or more groups to find what they are looking for.

Another thing to be aware of is there is also migration away from FB to other social media sites. This will further dilute pool of billiards enthusiasts across the web.

It is my thought that like in so many other things this will be a cycle that AZB will have to weather. Eventually people will tire of many of the social media groups and migrate back again.
AZB may have to slightly reinvent itself in order to no be left behind by changing times. It has always been this way. You adapt or you become obsolete.

In case anybody missed it. AZB is on FaceBook.

Another thing you have to take into consideration. Is the global economy. Many areas of the world have yet to recover fully recover. There is much financial disarray both at the government and personal level.
Billiards is a hobby for many and a profession for few. If you are not a professional then owning a cue or pool table is not a necessity in life. It is something you treat yourself to when you have the disposable income.

There inlays part of the problem. Many people that previously had the disposable income no longer do. Individuals that would have potentially been earning it these past years still are not. Under such conditions peoples priorities change. Hobbies are put on the back burner or abandoned completely.

I would predict that as time passes and people begin to regain their economic prosperity they will once again become more active in their hobbies and forum activity here and elsewhere will stabilize and become more vigorous.

True dat. It seems like these topics come in cycles, like history repeating itself, but they do get old. And nobody seems to want to use the search feature to find answers to questions that have been asked many times previously. :o

We all have good memories of AzBilliards, I'm sure. It's those memories that bring us back to read here, to see if there's anything new happening. We are all members of the Tribal Nation of Pool. Some of us are lifelong members and can't stay away from the place.

Reading and lurking on AzBilliards is a much more pleasant experience for some, I think. :)

I have a sister in law no one wants anything to do with. If you see here coming you go the other way so as to not have to deal with her.

Then for one reason or another, family matters or something you have to see and talk with her. And it is not that bad for like 5 minutes. Then you are quickly reminded why you never have anything to do with her.

You made one posting on here today and you are already getting sucked into everything you hate. Don't do it, don't get sucked in, it is not worth it.

Thank you. You're right. Okay.

I'm actually procrastinating doing my job today about international law. Yuck!

It's more fun to hang out on AzBilliards, but the clock is ticking, and my deadline is looming, so off I go into the land of Nuremberg Trials.
