I find thinking about the follow through counter productive. What I try to do is to hit the cueball in a positive fashion (with an accellerating stroke). When you do that the cue naturally follow through, unless you stop it. If you use a classic snooker stance and technique the follow through will be determined by your grip on the cue, as the hand will be stopped by the chest. As I no longer use this kind of strict stance, I have absolutely no idea how far I follow through, and I don't even want to know. The feedback to the hand from the strike on the cueball tells me all I need to know.
Follow through will (should) always be longer than your backswing. Because your backswing goes only as far as the length of your bridge, and your follow through should at least be the diameter of the ball + your bridge length.
If backswing=follow through, then you haven't hit the ball yet...xD
EDIT:
Maybe Im an idiot, but if "follow through" is defined as the moment the tip hits the ball to when the cue stops moving, then I think it MIGHT be equal, although some players do drop the elbow which effectively makes the follow through longer.
Heard a golf tip on the radio today...to have your backswing the same length as the follow through.
Started me wondering if this tip might apply to pool as well?
Scott Lee or Randy G are the two guys that will be telling the gospel in this thread. If either of them chime in just listen to what they say about this.
pull it back slooow and follow through loooong
butt hand contacts chest on many shots
Your follow through should be where your natural finish of the stroke is. With a piston stroke, it will be a little longer than with a pendulum stroke.
When you raise and lower your elbow, usually to keep your back hand moving on a straight horizontal line rather than in an arc like a pendulum. Can I get an explanation of a piston stroke? I think I know and that I do it I just want the opinion and clarification by someone who has been around longer.
