Why Is There Such Animosity On The Forum?

Let me start with an apology for stirring up a ruckus with my past thread......no reason whatsoever to even bring up the topic other than to post " I had no idea it would lead to such noise."

Reflect on this....the thread went from zero to 100 way too fast........4 days and 16 pages and a closed thread........and the intended subject/topic was never answered or adequately addressed either......somewhere things got out of control.....it became personal or so it appeared to me from my perusal of the posts......and Mr. Wilson even posted a warning about not letting things get out of hand.......remain civil.

My question is this and please answer only if you care about the swamp the Forum seems to be becoming.....and the Mods can't impose behavioral control other than thru banning people.....why can't there just be simple disagreement.......two different viewpoints. albeit opposing versions, coexisting on the same Forum without imposing a battle of wills or imperial power to prove that the other person is wrong.......and it's much more than that nowadays too........make the other guy look stupid and publicly rebuke & mock the other guy..,,,,,you know.what I mean.....hit 'em hard.

Look, I readily admit I started the last ruckus but I did not create the atmosphere which permeated the thread so early on.......and I threw a couple of jabs too but never a best punch type post which would have been pretty meaningless because at a certain point, the thread had pretty much turned into a free for all bar fight. My question is simply why? Maybe if we can figure out why......or identify the catalyst(s) that turned things sour, we can guard against it happening in the future which kind of seems to be a common event on the Forum. Things seem to go south on certain topics or with certain Azers and the overall combination seems to be absolute poison.

I couldn't agree more! I've been using forums for a variety of topics for the past 15 years. I have to say that most forums I've been participating, are friendler and a lot nicer than here. The best one being one for home brewers where everyone is respectful to everyone, eventhough sometime, people don't agree.

It's okay to agree not to agree and keep it that way. I doubt any people here knowingly give false informations. Everyone progress at different speed, everyone think what they knows is true (otherwise, they wouldn't argue over it!). It's easy enough not to understand each other when you talk, it's even worst in writing.

Just my 2 cents!

Cheers!

We should all get to walk around with paintball guns. Any time someone does something you feel is socially unacceptable, you shoot them. This way, people will know to avoid the "socially inept" just by looking for the technicolour wardrobe.

I said something similar about driving. Cars should be made so that they can be easily flipped. Once flipped the occupant has to wait for the flip truck to show up and put them right. Then people will learn to drive the right way or risk being flipped.

The best theory I've ever heard came from a former boss of mine. He said if they replaced the airbag in the steering wheel with a dagger, people would probably drive with a lot more common sense....

Only once have I found a person from the forum to be as big an asshole in real life as they were on the forum. In fact they were surprisingly much worse in person.

Everyone else has been pleasant and nice offline.

Speaking of airbags, they've been in cars for a lot longer than most people realize, and are usually found in the back seat. They're called Mother-in-laws. :)

What's the definition of mixed emotions?

Watching your Mother in Law drive off a cliff in your new Mercedes.

Just like everything else it's Obama's fault

I find it a bit amusing to see this thread, because I wanted to start a similar one a few days ago. It is interesting to know I am not the only one with this view of this forum.

This forum is indeed not a very friendly one. I participate in many web communities and unfortunately, this one, the one which interests me the most right now, is a very vitriolic one.

I have started a few threads on here, most with the sole goal of improving my pool game, and all of them have a quite large number of useless low-life replies from people who probably can't run 3 balls.

I have been told to forget about ever playing pro speed, "drop those stupid dreams and get a job" is what I apparently should do. I have been told I was just "a troll who think he can plays" after posting a video of myself playing asking for help & review. I can't recall the number of times I was called a "stupid kid" or something to that effect. I have even been called a "googan" whatever the hell that is. Apparently it means I suck and I buy everything to help me suck less, but without much result because I just suck too much.

Whatever.

I do receive some PMs every once in a while from members on here asking about my progress. I actually really like getting those, it adds some motivation.

I don't bother posting much on here anymore. I have learned what little I could learn on here and for the most part now, it is mostly people arguing or talking down to other people. I expected this forum to be more mature considering the nature of the game. Seems like quite the opposite.

Any given group of people (like this or any forum) represents a virtual cross-section of the human population. In other words, the people here are no different than your neighbors, friends and family. They all have their own likes and dislikes, beliefs and predjudices, attitudes and perceptions. They also have their own inherent communication skills, or a lack thereof.

In other words, this place is more like real life than some might like to admit. The average Joe on the street is somewhat rude and/or insensitive to people he doesnt know, is not going to have the same opinion as you, probably doesn't like you, and does not give a single solitary shit about what you care about.
So what else is new ?

It's all about context, and understanding humans.
Go to a church and everyone will be polite and reverent.
Go to a biker dive and they probably wont.
A pool forum is somewhere in between - you got your deacons and your dildos :D

Have a great weekend.

I think one needs look nor further than the lurkers thread. Things get heated enough that some new people don't even want to post.

Pro players and industry leaders have just stopped posting because it isn't worth the headache. I have learned quite a bit and enjoyed reading a lot of the topics here but I agree it can seem a very unwelcoming place in some aspects.

I will continue to post and enjoy some of the great content and people but think it is a shame that some with the most to offer have been driven off and others who could contribute don't want to get involved.

Some people are just jerks, there is no other way to put it. It is very telling when someone goes through the trouble of posting for the sole purpuse of putting down a young person such as yourself, who is eager to learn the game. It took a lot of courage for you to put yourself out there like you did, and I think 98% of the forum has a lot of respect for that. The other 2% saw their opportunity to vent their frustration and bitterness over their own lives, shielded by the relative anonymity and safety of the internet.

There are people like that in the poolhalls too. I remember when I started playing. I was nowhere near as talented as you. Some rotten old geezer took it upon himself to inform me that I would never reach my goals, neither short term or long term in this game. I had no talent he said, and I'd need a four game handicap to 10 from (a local player) til the day I died. I proved that guy wrong, which is the best way to deal with people like that. You'll have "revenge" moments like that to look forward to I'm sure. From what I've seen they'll come a lot sooner than they did for me.

It's the best feeling in the world when reaching a skill point where asking a guy like that to play you'll get the nervous "Not now, maybe later" reply. Those guys are scared, worthless people, whose only joy is stepping on people they consider beneath them on the skilll ladder. Luckily they are rarely all that skilled, and they always end up getting their comeuppance. Sometimes the world isn't all that unfair.:)

Of course those people will still be knocking you if you dust off the Canadian championship sometime in the future. You should take that as a great compliment, because them knocking you shows that deep down, they are threatned by you. Why else would they be so eager to put you down? Being disliked by guys like that is almost like a badge of honor! Meanwhile they will be playing their own, stale game with their increasingly mummy-esque playing partners, refusing to play you, while still knocking your skills, lol.

Or because you have people that play or used to play that just don't care about helping others or future generations of pool. Such as this fine poster that pm'd me.

why so sensitive? and you even red pepped me haha

I don't know why I let you piss me off and if you would have had a lick of advice in your post than I probably wouldn't have cared...

Guess we are just different types of people. If I didn't think I could help I wouldn't have responded. Some people are like that and some people are dicks. Different strokes for different folks.

you have no idea the amount of help i have given out on this site ... I am just in a entertain myself mode on this site now. If i was you I go post in the instructors section, you will get some good help there from who like to help

If you really think you have learned what you could on here in the short time you have been here, you have no clue of what all is on here. And, with your attitude of wanting to leave because it's not mature enough for you, you have no chance of attaining pro speed. If you can't handle it here, there is no way you will handle being in different pool rooms around the country or world, and you will quit the game altogether.
Pretty cliche as most of the pro's aren't here posting whereas they have old accounts.

Good advice to some extent though for the right temperament..

Azbilliards is a stage for all the pool world to see!

As a result, its lights camera action 24/7 and no one wants to be "shown up!"

So, tempers flare up and nasty things get said when someone just got verbally "pimp slapped " for all the pool world to see.

So, no people are not nice on here as this stuff follows them to the pool room, league and tournaments.

Everybody mumbling about how you got humiliated on azbilliards. Just ain't fun.

Separate the wheat from the chaff...which will sometimes be easy, and sometimes not. Best to keep an open mind and ignore the negativity.

I only read a few posts so apologies if this has already been mentioned.

Having people's real names would not make any difference, imo. Some of the nastiest flame wars I've seen are on Facebook, where everyone uses their real name.

I also read a few comments that AZ is pretty harsh. Again, I think FB can be 100 times worse. If you go to any nutrition type site, or any fitness type site, be prepared to see the nastiest comments you can, all with people using their real names. Those are just some of the interests I have, and visit online. I'm sure there are many, many, many others 100 times nastier than pool on AZB.

I only read 22 pages from the other thread. What happened to supergreenman and classiccues ? One other guy was also throttling Armstrong pretty hard.

By the way, Armstrong I had never seen you post before that thread. I may not agree with everything you stated, but I admired your tenacity and support of your position.

I would sit and drink with you if we ever meet.

Jim Talmon

P.S. I enjoyed the North American pissing contest that erupted during the thread.
