I had a friend who seemed to have some knowledge about cue building and was happy to brag about it but completely became an ass anytime I asked a question about cues. I have no desire to build cues, I just love the knowledge because it allows me to appreciate the end product. He made the custom cue builders all out to be secretive non personal people. I have found here that yes you need to put in the effort to learn and plenty of excellent cue builders will see you truly have a love for their passion and they are more than willing to help. It is up to your effort and ability to question the process to unlock the knowledge that so many have here. You can't start with the answer, you must respect the process. Hence this is why after reading this forum for some time I have realized the errors of my own personal thoughts on CNC cue construction. I was a an uneducated ass until I read more of what well versed educated and learned cue builders and CNC programmers allowed me to see. Keep your mind open and allow those who are willing to give you a part of their soul the credit they deserve. There are many here who will help. Hell I never wanted to be a cue builder, but someday who knows maybe I can be a Cantando to someone's Barry. This is my favorite section of AZ, all you cue builders kick ass. Ty

The cue building book and DVDs that are available are a very good way to learn fast. But if you already have a lathe and just want to know which type of work to start doing first it is simple. It is Tips, ferrules and cleaning shafts. Master that and you are well on your way to being able to build a cue. The basic principals you learn on ferrules are the same for butt caps and joint rings. The forearm joint is also very similar to a ferrule job as it involves a tenon and something going over it with threads or a screw to hold it. So think of a ferrule as ring work and it just flows right down the cue. Then practice wraps and refinishing. Once you can do a good wrap and refinish then you are ready to add a router to your lathe for tapering and build a simple cue.
im starting with tips yes, having difficulty with the cutter(razor blade) getting flicked around

planning on buying the book soon, i have access to lathes at work, could even buy one of the old ones that doesnt get used anymore small type, if i get that far into it

"Where to begin" is a different place for everybody. If you are a machinist then you already have a lot of skills & experience. If you are a machinist with a machine lathe, mill, and all the tooling required for basic machining, then you're yet another step ahead. Perhaps give some basis to your situation & from there it would be easier to offer a tip or two.
