Tony Vs Dennis Chit Chat Thread

Sorry to learn of your physical ailments, Jay.....I just thought it would be a good and interesting matchup.........

Boo hoo, Jay.

Over the last year I have dealt with plantar facitiias in my right foot and have had my right knee drained and shot up with a cortisone cocktail once and my left knee three times. My doc has drained over 85cc of fluid out of my knees.

I am scheduled for arthroscopic surgery for the torn meniscus on my left knee Aug 18th.

Boo hoo for you.

One more thing for all you shrinking violets.

Behind the scenes Jay has sent me some very scathing personal messages that none of you are privy to. If I chose to say a few things here publicly I am well within my rights.

Lou Figueroa

Did you ever consider that 'they' might not be attempting to get personal and belittle you at all?
Maybe it's just their opinion that they don't like the way you do commentary on a game and they don't think you're very good at it.
And they think someone else, other than you, could do it better?

I was referring to someone who was making derogatory comments about me and not critiquing my commentary. Possibly you know who I mean.

You can put them on here if you like, whatever I sent to you. Just don't make it up. I wouldn't put that past you, that's how low you are. I never saved the nasty PM's you sent to me. I didn't want my computer to catch a virus from them.

Just check the tape.

He spotted the second ball WAY off line -- any pool player who does that knows better -- he totally did it on purpose and it was a sleaze move.

Lou Figueroa

I thought he placed it obviously off line because he didn't want to fuss with spotting it. Looked like he wanted to let Tony do it as he was disgusted and just wanted to go sit down.

You are a great guy.

Your commentary blows.

Lou Figueroa

You are just being facetious as always. You are NOT a great guy Lou. In fact you are kind of a low life. I have zero respect for people like you and will go out of my way to avoid them.

Let me give you a little insight on the problem with Jay's commentary.

A few years back at the US Open One Pocket in Vegas, Jay and I were in the booth together for a TAR stream. Afterwards -- apparently unimpressed with *my* commentary -- he tried to school me on what the Brits had told him about commentating for the MC. Basically, the guidance they had given him was: talk into the microphone like you're speaking to your grandmother who has never watched pool before.

And I said to him, "Jay, that's nuts. We're doing a TAR stream for guys that know 1pocket, or at least have a more than rudimentary knowledge of the specific game and the sport at large."

But he would not be dissuaded. He took the Sky Sports guidance -- that was marginally applicable to the MC audience -- and ever since has been trying to apply it to entirely different, far more sophisticated audiences.

And that's only one of the reasons -- along with his basic lack of serious 1pocket knowledge -- his commentary blows chunks.

IMO :-)

That's a LIE! I may have said you talk too much while the players are shooting and you need to shorten your comments and make them briefer. Short, succinct comments are something I did learn from the Sky team. Also, you were far less knowledgeable about the intricacies of One Pocket than you think, often calling for the wrong strategy and failing to realize things like ball count and the mood of each player. You talked like it was you shooting and not them, "I'd do this and I'd do that." I remember telling you the match is about them, not us! I guess you conveniently forgot all that.

I was trying to help you at that time, but your ego wouldn't allow that to happen.

I just want to know, can Jay and Lou play a one pocket grudge match which is streamed by POV like the famous Figueroa/Barton match? Loser has to apologize to the other and admit that he's wrong?

Obviously, you haven't been around the pool forums for enough years.

Lou is NEVER wrong. Even when he is WRONG.

And he never apologizes. He just gets worse.

Christ.

I daresay you are quickly becoming unwelcome on this board and I surmise the only reason your continued harassment has not resulted in discipline is because it has yet to be reported.

You wouldn't have had the opportunity to commit those last few fouls if I were the judge.

That happens when you spend 20 years on your knees as a PAO.

Boo hoo for you.

Jay's commentary

I enjoyed Jay's commentary very much.

I grew up with Accu-stats and my favorites were Billy Incardona and Grady Matthews. I really miss the pair of them, they did a tremendous job and I learned much of what I know from them. Nick Varner and Buddy Hall and Jim Rempe were strong as well from a knowledge perspective.

I've heard Jay's commentary for years and while I always liked it when he was in the booths, my appreciation has grown and grown. I think he was up against it because when I was 15-17 I was hanging on every word of BI/GM, whereas these days I know most of what there is to point out about the situation already. I became a tougher audience. But little by little I noticed that I felt a deep sense of relief every time Jay got into the booth.

I play pretty well and usually have a good feel for the shots that the players are considering, the strategies they are using, what the priorities are, things they should be careful of, etc. When other people commentate one pocket they often get critical of shot selection, berating players for not shooting shots that clearly don't lay right or make no sense. Worse yet they start talking about themselves too much, or name dropping, etc.

When Jay gets into the booth that all stops. He calls the shots as well as anyone can with two world class players. He is passionate about the game. He doesn't name drop, but does have a lot of behind the scenes knowledge that add even more flavor and help develop the personalities and color the contest we are watching. I find him entertaining and he makes me feel like I'm sweating the match with a friend.

BI/GM were like my first commentator love so it's hard to compete with, but Jay is taking their place in my eyes. He would be my first pick for any future matches and I appreciate what he contributes to the sport.

My only disappointment was that I bet the 'under' against him, and I was hoping to hear one comment about "I don't have a horse in this race, I just want to see a GOOD WELL PLAYED CLOSE MATCH" :) But he was too professional for that.

I have no idea how his commentary lands with non-pool players, what the demographics are in various settings, or anything like that. I'm a commentary fish. All I can do is share what I enjoy.

Fact is Jay has forgot more than his haters have ever known, and who have done zero for pool , Jays first class trying to figure out what eiather of those 2 players were doing was nearly impossible neither one of them play conventional one pocket by any stretch of the imagination

Very sad to read an excellent thread being taken down into the dumps with the Jay & Lou argument. Take it to PM so the rest of us do not have to read it. WE DONT GIVE A SHIT!!

I always enjoy Jay in the booth as well.

Hope to see a rematch. Some more races to 10 will do between guys like Tony, Dennis, Alex, Shane, etc.

I've never sent you a private message.

Proper protocol in a money match is to spot the balls as accurately as you can.

No, you were very specific about all that.

Besides, I have quite a bit of background in broadcasting and worked for several years before the cameras and microphones. Used to actually teach CEOs about that in fact :-)
