GPPA League by Mike Sigel: $250,000 first prize and $1 million guaranteed

"I tend to agree with you, makes it tough to sandbag and gives poor players a chance"

Which high level players will shun immediately,

And of course any league is only as good as its high level players..

As I understand it you can only take your ball in hands when you're at the table so if you run out your opponent won't get the chance to use them so the better player would still have the advantage it seems. If my understanding is incorrect please feel free to set me straight.

I listened to Mike explain his GPPG League for about 45 min. last night at Sand Castles in Jersey. Either it's the worst format ever and it will not get off the ground or it's brilliant and will pull tons of new players in. He seems like he has all the bases covered against sandbagging and if he has the money/investors he might just have a winner. Johnnyt

I spoke with Mike about the league when he was in my area, at first I really hated the ball in hand rules, but it does help a lot to encourage the bad players to play. Any other league, you still need to make balls and play shape. A new player or someone that just does not care to get better will never run more than a few balls at a time, even by accident. Having a few ball in hands at least gives them the illusion of accomplishing something.

As a player who would probably be ranked a 1 or a 2 in the league with at most 1-2 ball in hands (going by how many ball in hands it will take me to run out a rack 90% of the time I would estimate), I don't like the rule too much.

Another thing that is iffy is that you are playing the ghost during the playoffs. So a team playing on loose 7' tables will be able to score points a lot easier than a team that plays on 9' Diamonds with 4.5" pockets. I also don't see a way to properly document the scores unless everything has to be video taped and watched. Even if there is an "official" watching, what if he knows the players on the team? What's to stop him from not calling a foul or giving someone an extra turn or ball in hand?

Mike said it is definitely not Kevin. He is not however disclosing the investors name which is probably a smart decision.

Wedge

If anyone knows the name of a fattish man in a suit about 40 and about 5' 8", he was with Sigel when he was in MA, he looks to be the one with the money :wink:.

I watched the you tube interview with Mike about the new league. Think he covered all the bases. Sounds interesting; I'd give it shot and see what happens. He did say that Johnny Archer is behind it also now. Is Johnny behind everything pool related??? lol?

One pro player is allowed on each team...........and playing for 1/4 mil..........I'd say every pro player is in.

If you listen to the business plan that Mike talked about, with some of the league ops putting on TV ads, billboard signs, and league ops being business people not pool players (except JA&KD), I like it's chances of making it if he has enough $ committed. I'd like know if winner breaks.

If I was mike I'd have a large poolroom set up teams once a week now and give them free table time and no fees to play for 6-8 weeks so the game can be tweeked where/if needed.

Don't forget a lot of us on AZB would be 1's and 2's so it don't sound too good to us, but we are not the meat of the type of players they are looking for. But the kind of $ their talking should interest just about anybody. Johnnyt

You're right Wedge. I am foolish to question that instantaneously this new league will be bigger and better than the APA or BCAPL and payout more in their first year.

The Delorean took over the automotive industry too and put GM out of business.

The Delorean might have been a new era of motor cars but when he decided to go to S America to have them built the gubmint destroyed him.
All the politicians saw their dough flying south and turned him into a cocaine dealer.
lol wtf
I would really enjoy playing in a league if they did something about the sandbaggers but until they find a way , deal around me.
I'm not a Siegel fan but I hope it works for the players sakes.

I sometimes play with a very good player and it isn't too much fun for me to watch him run rack after rack so i cam up with a game where when he wins he breaks 10 ball and we play even, when I win I break 9 ball and get BIH to start the rack. It allowed both of us time at the table and did make it more fun to play with a much better player.

I heard Mike is coming to Detroit on Monday to talk about this league, I would definitely like to hear more about the game to see if it really could work. Personally I think I could run most racks of eight ball with 1-2 BIH on a bar table. I maybe deluding myself so I will have to try it. I do like how the handicaps are tied into how many games you win so it would be almost impossible to sandbag once the players have been playing for a while.

It does seem kind of funny that when a -1 plays a 6, the 6 will get a ball in hand on everyone of his balls and only needs to play shape on the eight. I would definitely like to watch some of this between various skill levels to see how the games end up.

Sigel and GPPA

I hope Mike Sigel is monitoring this thread. To get some ideas from those for and against the league.
I think it has potential.I'm always for trying something new to bring exposure to pool.
We all know pool needs a shot in the arm.

Just trying to give the GPPA a chance. I remember a quote on a well respected AZ Members foot note that I would refer to in this situation:

"Those who dance are always laughed at by those who don't even hear the f'in music - George Carlin RIP"

Peace Brother

Wedge

I like the idea, but if he is trying to be the "un" APA, then please for God's sake, don't follow the same lame rules they installed in that league....you don't NEED to. If you make a ball on break, you are stuck with them. If you scratch shooting at the 8ball, but don't make the 8ball, you lose. Two ridiculous APA rules, that should not be included in this much better concept league imho. This league is better than that :)

That would be tough, since Trudeau is in prison! Mike was "kicked out"
of the new league by the owners. He has no financial interest in the GPPL.
The owners (in Vegas) sold the league to one of their area directors in TX.
That person has decided to put the league on hold, for the time being.

Did he hook up with Kevin Trudeau again ?

The league played only one session, played by a few dozen teams in several states. The winning teams were paid some money. 1st Place was by a team out of Corner Pocket Billiards in Largo FL (where I live and play out of). They won $10,000. 2nd and 3rd got $5k and $3K IIRC. Sigel was there to personaly "present" the checks to the winners. I was present too, and all Mike cared about was getting interviewed by the local tv station...they didn't show up. LOL

Ahahahahahaha-surprised that much was paid out-kinda like the 'million dollar tournament that garnered 11 players by Allen Hopkins. Only in pool-even the guys that been around 40 years dont know you gotta crawl before you walk! Hey i know, why dont we have a Masters tournament too like in golf? Lol!
