Individual players in the US come from a wide range of support backgrounds, from suburban kids whose parents fly them around the country for tournaments to kids who grow up hanging out and gambling in a pool hall at a young age. We all recognize this and don't feel the need to legitimize some and delegitimize others or focus on these differences
Yet when it comes to finding excellence across the globe, we conjure up images of government-funded robotic regimens or some such crap. This is damaging. And it stems from a harmful desire to identify and emphasize and exaggerate OTHERNESS. This stems from Xenophobia, imo
Pool will advance when we are open in our hearts to embrace the realities that
(1) players everywhere have a wide range of support mechanisms
(2) players from other countries are far more same than different. The nature of their hopes, desires, personal weaknesses, successes and setbacks come from the same menu as do the players we know.
