I was able to watch a few matches yesterday. Best match for me was seasoned veteran Jayson Shaw v. the 17-year-old Moritz Neuhausen from Germany. Moritz has the same coach as Joshua Filler, and at the beginning of this match, he was in control. But experience won in the end, as Jayson never gave up and fought back. Towards the end, I thought Moritz might have been shell-shocked by Shaw's strong fight to include excellent safeties, resulting in a couple misses on fairly easy shots by the junior player. During the match, though, Moritiz had his game face on and never flinched, but at the end, he smiled broadly, stuck his hand out, and congratulated Jayson.
The country shirts for this event were not as good, IMO, as World Masters. I saw sponsor patches peeling off the shirts, whereas in the Masters, the sponsor logs were heat-ironed on the shirts. Big difference!
Also, I understand why they have music playing in the background. The sound of 16 tables with pool balls pocketing and being broken would not be attractive, but some of the musical choices were not to my liking, sounding almost like the cheap ESPN Sports music or porno flicks. I have no suggestions what music to play or what background would be best. Of course, a live audience definitely would be a welcome background sound but not at this time because of the stupid pandemic.
128 players from over 40 countries and no byes. In this Matchroom invitational, none of the players had to pay entry fees, which is kind of cool and in stark contrast to the $1,000 entry fees at other competitions in the States, though the expenses to say in Milton Keynes for an extended length of time can't be cheap.
