Jeremy Jones Appreciation Thread

Jeremy Jones has had a rough few days. First he and Chris Reinhold blew a 4-1 lead at the end of Day 1, then he made a mental blunder that cost him an extremely tense match which was otherwise very well-played. I literally cannot think of a more soul-crushing series of events in a professional pool context and I cannot imagine how JJ must be feeling. Therefore, as a way of showing support, I wanted to start a thread where people can share stories and sentiments about Jeremy demonstrating our appreciation for him. I'll start with a couple examples.

Before losing at the very end, Jeremy played an unbelievable match against David Alcaide, who just may be Europe's MVP in 2021. JJ played some monster shots and demonstrated outstanding tactical play. At the end of a very disappointing day, he gave Team America every reason to believe they can find a way to win despite the odds. By the end of the match, even many Europeans were rooting for him.

Jeremy is excellent for the game of pool in general. His vast knowledge and clarity make him a fantastic commentator and I think Team USA is fortunate to have him as a captain. He's been put into a daunting situation this year and performed well enough to earn universal respect. On the off chance that JJ ever sees this, I think he should know that he has our full love and support.
 
As team leader he has a lot on his plate. Then to pinch hit, is very difficult.
I know when I was involved running a tournament I rarely played well. To play at top level, every single brain cell is needed.

Jeremy played some killer 9 ball against Alcaide, it's very unfortunate how that set wound up. That was a really great set to watch. JJ withstood some real pressure and dealt with the crowd well.

My opinion only: Earl would not have turned in such a performance against Alcaide.

It has been BADASS to see him throw it down against some of the World's best with zero prep time.

More impressive than captain hook getting to the finals if the first IPT and winning it.
 
After giving it some thought, my opinion is that in the situation Jeremy faced in the final game, this is where his team (co-captain?) might have helped him. If one of them had been paying attention and noticed the clock was still running and he had no extension, could have called out to him to go ahead and shoot. This is an instance where just one team mate could have saved the day. Where were they and why didn't anyone alert Jeremy right away?
 
Jeremy commentated one of my matches before where I was a huge underdog. He was very selective and kind with the way he was describing my play. Could have been embarrassing to show my family if he was saying what he may have been thinking... I sought him out later at that event and thanked him for doing that. Good dude.

It can be funny to hear pro players commentating on amature matches.

I always laugh at the memory of hearing a pro say, '...yeah. he should have made that ball' about 20x on a stream.
 
JJ showed tremendous heart in that match with David. He’s talked a lot about fight and heart that he wants to see from the Americans and he walked the walked in that match and the entire event so far imo. He was fighting for every ball and an uncharacteristic mental blunder cost him and us fans seeing a proper end to what was one of the best racks in recent mosconi cup history. He’s gotten a tough roll two years in a row being the captain for USA and instead of making excuses and laying down he got out there and battled. Well played JJ.

How about that 3 rail draw shot he fired in? Nailed it on an unfamiliar and tough table, shape too!

I try that all the time and my success rate is so low I know it is a no go- oft just for show- and so I made it a no no, so you know.

Gotta go.

Much respect for JJ. I can’t imagine how nerve wracking this whole situation has been but he’s played some great pool. I’ll have to check out that shot mentioned above, I missed that match.
 
'Tis. the holiday season.
It's nice at anytime when a person or people, say or do, a good thing towards their fellow man or woman. It doesn't take much, as little of a nod of the head.
A few nice words or a positive gesture, can change a persons life. It's easier to give and be nice than to take and be cruel.
I have been guilty of some dumb crap I have typed.
I'm not watching the cup, I hope they are victorious and parade him around on their shoulders.
Someone, who knows someone, should show him this thread.

Edit. Parade him around even if they lose.

JJ has been great for pool for decades, his efforts, wins, accomplishments, bonus ball, Mcup. The list goes on. I’ve always liked and respected JJ. That hasn’t changed. Rough week-he’ll bounce back just fine. Too much heart not to.

Looking forward to see what JJ does next!

In April of 2015 I met JJ in Lafayette LA at the White Diamonds tourney. I had brought a handful of my mini cues to show off.
My friend Joey A put the word out and next thing a group of players started buying them. JJ happened by and was very interested in one in particular. After thinking about it for a few minutes JJ decided to pass on the cue.

In 2017 I ran into him again in Griff's, Las Vegas. My collection was with my friend so I decided to just gift him the cue. By the time I got my cues and returned JJ had left.

Next year at the cup I will seek him out and give him the little cue that he had is eye on back in 2015.
I really think our team and game are very lucky that Jeremy Jones is part of it.

I assumed that he thought having the ball cleaned was more important than using the time, and that he would get straight down on the shot when it was cleaned. The ref did tell him how much time was left and cleaned it quickly. I think in that situation, if one if his team mates called out to him that he would have turned towards them and frozen and said something like "huh?". He was just in that kind of mental space that everyone has been in under pressure. It's unfortunate and the match would have been better if he'd just got down and potted the 6 without worrying about perfect position on the 7 but it's just "one of those things". The Europe team went to speak to him afterwards and their body language said they were saying "we feel it". It's just one of those things, it happens, too bad.

I thought it was considered against the rules to get any coaching/advice from a teammate, unless it is your partner in a doubles match?

As far as JJ, after the initial shock and disbelief, he handled this entire incident with incredible class and made no excuses. Can you imagine how ugly it might have gotten if it had been Earl in that situation?
