Live (Barely) from the Derby

You want old style gambling come to the Philippines. I love the backroom feel to the many challenge matches going on here. Bet what you want when you want, by the game or the match. Bets are shouted out across the room and money is literally thrown in a bundle to the winners after each game. The action scene is better here than I’ve ever seen it, and that’s who so many top players are heading this way. It’s the center of the Pool universe!

Plus all kinds of food options only steps away. A big and hearty meal for two around 1,000-1,500P ($20-25). Good accommodations are inexpensive too. And the girls!! Come get some!
Save me a seat.

About 3-4 years ago I was able to check off attending the Derby from my bucket list. To say the least it was everything as I expected... action 24/7. One thing I distinctly remember was in the action room one kid was putting up everything he own (necklace, playing cue, j/b cue, headphones, his SHOES!, etc) and all his money (even the pennies) in his pocket to play ONE game of one pocket. He ended up losing that game (I ended up with his Meucci break cue). Glad I have my day job ;) As for the food situation... I would suggest making a trip to Trader Joes in Louisville prior going to the hotel. Load up there... also you survive in a hotel with a water boiler and rice cooker.
Filipino style - four to a room with a ten kilo bag of rice, a rice cooker and four cases of bottled water. They are good to go!

Ummm... The first year at The Horseshoe, we had the worst ice storm in Kentucky's history (according to the Governor) and the hotel staff couldn't get in to work. Nobody was arriving or leaving. If that repeats you won't need the cooler in your van. (y)☃️🏂
I do NOT like flying in bad weather, period! And I left Ohio decades ago to avoid the cold winters. I endured DCC for fifteen years straight but I get my kicks other ways these days. Nature is calling me in my waning years.

He just won on the TV table, came from behind and ran out the last game. Came from behind on the TV table yesterday too. The ole man still has some in the tank...

the win against filler can be found at molina mike's facebook page "windows open". what a story if he made it to the final.

IMHO that many wouldn't succeed. There was only 1 Johnson City and it was in one place.
Once the hard to get into restaurant expands from 20 tables to 50, people move on, backers move on, $$$ dries up.
There were two! JC and the Stardust, which was as good or better. The mob run casino was wide open in those days, anything goes and did. Cheap rooms, good food and 24 hour a day action. I was there!

Efren's match with Labutis had a rather odd ending. Efren broke at hill/hill. The first effect on the score was an intentional foul by Efren, taking the score to (-1) to 0. The next thing affecting the score was Efren running balls. He ran 8, taking the score to 7-0. He still needed one and had no easy scoring shot, with 6 of the remaining 7 balls still in the rack area and one uptable. The game was declared over at that point, with Efren winning the game and match. I'm not sure who is responsible for the mistake. The referee (Shuman) was right at hand, agreeing that the game was over.
I saw the same thing, but thought I had it wrong since both players + ref agreed the game was over.

#figueroa no class…. Has to tell everyone how great he is.

Fat boy from your posts, I can tell you are a class act, you don’t have to tell everyone how great you are, unlike others 😂

ah, actually he did tell us all what a class act he is.

Regardless, money does not automatically imbue someone with class.

neither does
claiming you have it

What an awesome memory to have. Standing in the arena with all those greats surrounding you!

What a great writeup.

I've read it before and I'll probably read it again...some day and somewhere, if not here...maybe you'll beat Bustamante next time I read it ;) He really may be the best ever at the game. I know I'm not supposed to say that. He knows all the shots and has always been a bit more patient than Efren and Pagulayan.

Thank you, BD.

Pretty amazing out there, isn't it?

I read that they tweaked the rules this year so that both players couldn't have a negative score. Did his opponent go negative too? Perhaps some different scoring rules were put into effect also? Seven plus negative one is equal to eight?

I don't know, just some speculation since I know that "standard" one pocket rules weren't in effect.

Only thing that makes sense is that both players owed 1 and by rule they both cancel out and play to 8 instead of 9 !

This speeds up play and is fair to both players .

One match started at 9 am and didn't finish until 3:30 pm it set things back pretty bad. The final was 3 to 1 and was almost 2 to 2 after 6 hours. It was decided to go to 1 ball one pocket if it was won by the guy down.

That being on a stream stuff is a double-edged sword for sure.

Play good or OK and you're a hero. Play like a dog and it's out there in perpetuity. The chat and comments can be "unforgiving" to say the least.

Welcome to the real world. Society always wants to build up a hero, just so they can tear them down in the end. That's the nature of the humanity unfortunately. Does that mean you shouldn't do it? Does that mean you shouldn't even try? Does that mean you should only do the status quo? Of course not. We need more men and women who have to courage to stand up to the public criticism and scrutiny and do what they believe in, what is right. They will come whether you are a saint or a sinner, it doesn't matter. They will come for you whether you shoot lights out or dog it...they will come. Get used to it, toughen up, or step to the rail.

Side story: I was sitting at a black jack table in Vegas with Mike Dechaine, who I have a lot of respect for, and I made a comment to him after having several "pops" at the table. I said to Mike, "Mike you really sucked in the Mosconi Cup." Not knowing Mike before then, I didn't mean it to be insulting, just honest. I looked over at him and his head almost dropped to the table and he said, "I know." His humility was apparent. I felt really bad and remorseful for saying that. I could only hope and dream to have his skills and the opportunity to screw up for my country on the biggest stage in the world. He is not alone in that event for having a pressure on them including Shane and recently Shaw. The Mosconi Cup is a different beast in terms of pressure. I learned a little that day.

No, to my eyes Efren was at 1 and Pijus was at (-2) when Efren took an intentional foul. But instead of deducting one from Efren's score, putting him at zero, Ken removed one of the two foul coins for Pijus, leaving Efren at 1 and Pijus at (-1).

Were you there when they built the Mayflower too? Damn you ancient. ;) I only wish i could have gone to JC one time. You know the buildings are still there. Be cool to have a event there one more time. I think its a mattress store now. The golf course they built, StardustGolfClub designed by Geor.Jansco, is still there and open. Its just about a 1/2 mile from the old tournament site. https://www.google.com/maps/place/I...d0d4d879332111!8m2!3d37.8175712!4d-88.9519467

How did Dan Harriman go?
Did he win every event at the Derby?
Justnum needs to update his autobiography.

Glad the general food situation worked itself out as well.

How much would you pay for unlimited cooked and served rice?
