Spanish Open, June 2023, from Matchroom

To anyone who predicted, before the Spanish Open began, that the semis would be Mark Bijsterbosch vs Pijus Labutis and Skyler Woodward vs Jin Hu Dang:

Would you like to be my stockbroker?

I would like to see a summary of the field's performance as a function of FargoRate.

I was waiting to say

My name is Eklent Kaci, you beat my brother, prepare to die. It will have to wait till another tournament. 🤣

I agree with the 5 B&Rs (a 4-pack and a single), but I don't think Woodward missed any shots (despite what Matchroom posted).

so basically TPA 1.000? sky's stats had 2 safety errors but idk what that means in this case. either way it didn't lead to loss of rack

Wow !

What a record day. A record day for upsets. Must be first time NO big name favorites made it to last day (i.e. made it to semifinals) in Matchroom major event.
Sky is the newly installed favorite and due a Matchroom major win especially with his performance here and recent events
Really impressed with Dang , cool customer, top notch cueing potting and one of best breakers in this event. Been around for some time but never made much impact in major events.
I think Marc B is least likely to win, strong game but bag of nerves, weak mental game could not close match with Duong.
Pijus is the biggest giantkiller of them all upsetting Albin and Gorst and should overcome Marc B.
IMHO whoever wins semifinal between Sky Dang (the 2 remaining 800 players) should win title
So
1st favorite Sky
2nd favorite Dang
3rd favorite Pijus
4th favorite Marc

Very well analyzed. I agree that Marc looked like he lost his composure and limps into Sunday. Labutis was brilliant against Fedor, giving him very few chances, and if he can produce that same level tomorrow, his chances to win the title are significant. Jin Hu Dang never played that much internationally, but I recall him beating Appleton to a pulp in a 10-ball event in Las Vegas in about 2011, when Darren was playing his best pool. Dang's A-game will give anyone problems, but whether he can produce it on Sunday is yet to be seen. Skyler was brilliant in London and is now in stroke again in Lugo, so he's the most in-form player left and deserves to be considered the favorite.

Sunday should make for some great theater.

No, not a 1.000 TPA. Woodward scratched on the break in Game 1. That's a break error. A safety error for Accu-Stats is if, after a safety, the opponent pockets a ball on his next turn (excluding kick-ins) or misses a shot that is easier than a spot shot. Woodward committed two safety errors, one in Game 2 and one in Game 10.

I'd say that anyone who named any one of those as a semi-finalist is a master picker.

Bob <-- not a master picker

agree completely. sky vs dang is the biggest match.

conditions significantly tougher than UK open. pockets play tighter, it's not rolling nearly as good, while the rails seem grippy. perspiration is a factor too it seems.

to be completely honest i only remember him by his eyebrows haha. i did some searching to see what he's been up to the last 3.5 years. it seems that like wu he played some chinese 8-ball during the pandemic. zheng and wang can didn't, from what i can tell. shows the importance of staying in competition.

Off and running and on the very first shot of the first semifinal, I already didn't like what I saw. Labutis opted to apologize for a golden break. Yes, nobody can do one on command, much as no golfer can make a hole in one on command, but in each case, it's an occasional consequence of a good shot.

In pro golf, the hole in one is celebrated wildly, even at match play, and it helps sell pro golf as fans love holes-in-one. Pro pool fans love golden breaks, too, and players should get excited about them because it helps sell the game.

Perhaps we're heading to where players apologize for making anything but the one or a wing ball on the break.

On the positive side, the outstanding arena announcer aced the introductions.

Anybody watching from Germany? In Poland and until yesterday in Germany i was able to watch on matchroom.live. but today there is nothing and nothing on YouTube. On the event page they don't list Germany and say:anywhere else on matchroom.live. streaming rights suck, but even more when you are traveling 😐

I thinks it's an American/gambling habit reaction, that's now confronting it's truth.
When I see someone from a different country say it/act it out, it can/does feel weird at times.

Yeah, why apologize?

It then seems to feel like the typical/gambler? pool player ''soft sell'' moment, is occurring. :)
I could be wrong, but I've traveled thee above road bahFore.
With all the intermix of players from such different countries & mindsets.... this is cool.
The variety of cultures, gives the viewer a plethora of body actions during play.
The game keeps these men grounded from those they've been around before and not enjoyed.... While growin' up havin' to pay their dues.
They have Good mutual respect for one another, Love it!

It seems the en vogue thing to do when a fortunate roll occurs is to nod or waive in affirmation of the luck to your opponent, including a "Golden Break" (I hate that term BTW). Making the 9B on the break is lucky unless you are a rack mechanic.
