I finally got it!

The "Take it easy on me" evokes a personal resolve. Even though I smile and nod with, "good luck", I flash back to my boxing match for a grade as a freshman Cadet at USAFA. My opponent was a Mexican National on an exchange scholarship. I didn't like him. So during the match just previous to ours when he approached me with, "hay how about let's just go do the patty cake and take our C grade?" I was shocked and offended but kept my calm with a nod and O K. (Perhaps a technical honor code violation) 😉 🤷‍♂️
So at the glove touch in the match. I took one step back to plant for my full power right between the eyes. With head gear and 16 ounce gloves and my 150 lbs it wasn't enough to knock him out. My skills weren't enough to finish him, so we went 3 rounds toe to toe and both got A grades. All offense and no defense was the ass says mint. Offense prevailing I won the fight on points.
Edit: the swing thought was, "Patty cake this"! It works to this day. 😉

It's a bit of sharking, but it wouldn't bother me that much. If you let things like this bother you, then there must be a multitude of other things that bother you. A well rounded pool player knows how to deal with comments like this and pretty much ignores them.

Agreed. It's not worthy of an initial response when someone tries it.

My typical greeting is, "Play well and let's have fun." But, if they use that line, all they get is, "Play well."

And, if I win, I sometimes toy with them afterwards and ""confess" something like, "Your initial sharking attempt scared the heck out of me and caused me to redouble my efforts to win. Because, when somebody I don't know says that they're usually a strong player and will stab me in the back the first chance they get."

2- Start humming the theme to "JAWS."
3- Put your cue down and hold your knees to keep them from knockin'
4- Just smile and smirk.
5- Exclaim,....."I need weight!!"
Seriously, it all depends on who & how they say it.
Yrs ago, I had a young Latin lad say dat to me after watching me miss for 15 minutes straight.

I always heard it as "red-headed step-child", although I suppose the child abuse implication is not in vogue--not that it should be.... Mostly though, I think the rhythm of the words is better. :unsure:

As for the topic, I've had people to ask me to take it easy on them more than I've said it to anyone else, but it's usually either someone expecting to get trounced, or the complete opposite.

I agree with the cent I ment butt 😉 The word ignore, well pretty much is better. I think of as putting the box back on the shelf and continue. Just using their request to elevate my "game face" attitude. "Yeah sure let's play patty cake. ☺
Patty cake This. " is a good swing thought for me. 😉 🤷‍♂️

Jean Balukas (for newbies, one of the all-time greatest women players/unbeatable gamblers) got hit with that cutesy move by hundreds of first-time women opponents (who never did it a second time).

Many us dedicated fans-of-Jean heard her knock those foolish gals flat and shaking in their sneakers when she -- icy-cold and stone-faced -- looked directly in their eyes up close and said: "Lady, now I'm going to shoot your ovaries off" :mad:

When people tell me to take it easy I try to sound sincere when I say I will. Then I lay down the best set I can often coming out smoking the first few games. When the smoke clears some comment about me saying I would take it easy. "That was taking it it easy."

Some that played me often for small bets were surprised when we met in a fair sized tournament. "You didn't give me a chance!" "No, I am in business mode tonight."
