2006 AZ Straight Pool Challenge

hey all, a while ago, I'd offered a reward to whoever posted the most entertaining and ridiculous total chaos straight pool run. I never paid out for that (there were only 3-4 responses and 1 was a joke). so if anyone wants to videotape and post their run - I'll chip in a whopping $25 for the high run :o

Its been a while since I've had another crack at beating my straight pool high run and the NY resolutions & DM Invitational threads gave me an idea. A year long straight pool challenge! This challenge has two parts:

a) A Master High Run list of ALL the best runs achieved by AZ members in 2006 to find out who has the highest run of the year. (this list will be the first post of the thread which I will edit and keep updated, simply PM me if you have a high run that you want added)

b) Each member has one post where they list their personal best top 3 all time high runs. Simply for bragging rights and to give each poster an incentive to beat thier own PB. (Like the DM Invitational please add one post with your TOP3 High runs and edit this if you beat it throughout the year)

I played straight pool a couple of nights ago and my best run was 53 so I'll get the ball rolling and add it to the Master list to give you the idea. Nine empty spots and 53 is nothing that special so get practising! As the year goes by and the high runs increase this list will become much harder to get on!!!

2006 AZ Straight Pool Challenge High Run Top 10
73 (Gerry, 12th Jan)
53 (TheOne, 4th Jan)
48 (SJM, 2nd Jan)
46 (dmgwalsh, 6th Jan)

41 (HobokenAPA 3rd Feb)

Wow... those are some impressive runs on this post. I've never run 100, but I feel that I'm not too far away.

Highest run in practice: 72
Highest run in competition: 63
Most impressive run: 50 and out on Danny Barrouty
Highest run last week: 47

Strong w/ the force am I... but not that strong

Are you playing tomorrow at Amsterdam? I'd like to watch some of the As and Pros play.

Very generous egg, prob maybe though that we are running a trust system here and as soon as you offer prizes we might get a few false posts if you know what I mean! ;)

Hey we'll probably have Colin saying he ran 50+ soon now you've offered $25   :D

OK, is it just me or is there something creepy about Darth Vader and Yoda talking so nicely to each other?

Had a minor flashback...........I hadn't played a game of 14.1 in almost 2 years and played just once on a 9 footer in a year or so and I go into the local room yesterday and run the ugliest 66 balls of my life. Felt great to play on a big table for a change but it made me remember that my eyes suck. I should definitely stick to 14.1 on the bigs and keep whitey nearby.;)

hmm... this is odd... darth vader talking to yoda... to darth... sorry dude gotta work on Saturday. Besides why would u want to watch me play when u can watch the pros?

Steve... I actually heard that you broke 200 once... I guess your reputation precedes you. Still Very impressive though.

Here's a new list. New additions anyone else ? This was the second time this year I played straight pool, practised for Finnish 14.1 Champs, starting tomorrow. Well, 66 ain't bad but I was a little bit sour after the run ended in a scratch depicted below after running 67 :( Darn...

2006 AZ Straight Pool Challenge High Run Top 10
73 (Gerry, 12th Jan)
66 (mjantti, 9th Mar) <-- new
53 (TheOne, 4th Jan)
48 (SJM, 2nd Jan)
46 (dmgwalsh, 6th Jan)
41 (Samiel, 2 March)
41 (HobokenAPA 3rd Feb)
34 (mikepage)

Nice lay-out after my small cluster break, but still was able to mess it up by shooting a careless position for the 1-ball. Wanted to get as straight as possible to have an easy stun-stun position for the break ball, but...

CueTable Help

I had a 60 about Feb 4. Pretty big pockets, though.

Bob Jewett posted he ran 52 at the DCC.

nice run

Mikko:

Congratulations. Not a bad run. Your high is in the 70s?

Good luck and let us know how you do.

Dennis

p.s. my game such as it is has gone south for awhile.

DMG,
Well, Indy is "south", maybe you need to get down here for a weekend of pool (since that is where your game has gone).

P.S. - my high run of the year is 42 (on medium pockets, not the tight stuff), but it was against a pro - I was NERVOUS.

P.P.S. - we are still considering the Chicago road trip, maybe 3rd weekend in April???

P.P.P.S. - JL (as expected) dominated our straight pool league this year, even with a monster handicap.

thats a rough scratch! and a nice run.....but next time maybe 7/6/1 to the break ball?

of course I never miss sitting infront of this computer!:D

Gerry

to dmgwalsh: high run is still 85, looking to break the century, but can't do it if I play every 2 months or so

to Gerry: wanted to take a little bit difficult shot to acquire stun-stun position for the break, I doubt I could've made a good position shot from the 1-ball to the 13-ball for the break shot. Don't like to make too fancy shots from the key ball to the break ball. I could've played it like a pro, and avoided the middle bag leaving a good distance between the 1-ball, but somehow I always end up playing position for a certain spot in straight pool and sometimes it costs me the run, like in this case.

Mikko, I hear ya, I'm not second guessing, just kind of doing the post game review.....besides, after running 60 some balls, you had a good feel for the table, and made the right choice at the time.......Another thought. Playing from the 7 to 6 to the 1 you can see the path the CB is taking, making it easier in my book. Coming off the 6 you had to miss the break ball, sending the CB towards a scratch. And actually putting the CB anywhere above the side pocket and a foot or so off the rail to on the rail, you had a pretty good key ball...

now get on the table and beat my run! There's something uncomfortable about seeing my name on top of that list?!:D

Yeah, I know your standards ;) Maybe next time I'm able to play some straight pool I try to break that... or we should get the One on the 14.1 mission again...

SJM ran 65 balls without a mistake against me on Friday night. The run was interrupted only by a truly unfortunate scratch at 42 after running three complete racks. After making a great break shot and blasting the pack wide open, the cue ball somehow scratched on the corner pocket between where he made the break ball and the pack! Next inning he runs 23. He was very much in-stroke, great play SJM!

Our race to 150 Friday night series is now 3-3, and I am positive there will be a 50+ run to report within the next few months. I thought I was slight favorite a few weeks pack, but I think SJM is rediscovering some of his old magic, and it's just a matter of time.

I don't get it... u say he ran 65 but he scratched at 42 and ran 23 after? I'm not saying I don't believe you or that SJM isn't capable of running balls, but that would mean he ran 42 not 65. Saying he ran 65 that night is misleading.

You're right, I ran a 42 and then scratched off the pack after making the break shot. Ran a 23 on the subsequent inning. I think Hoboken was just being generous in his account of the match.

Well, we all know you can run more than 42. ;)

Willie- It sounds great, but no road trips for me for a while. Did I see your picture in BD with ER and JL? Wow!! I'm jealous.

My pockets at home are tighter now with new rails. two balls won't fit in the openings. my game is off a bit, but hopefully, it will come around.

They cancelled those straight pool tournaments at Pockets. Not enough turnout.

I'm playing in a 14.1 tournament April 1-2 at Cue-n-you in Grayslake, but it's limited to A and B players only. No JL or her ilk allowed. Give the patsers an opportunity to win. Previous winners include Tom Karabotsos, Willie Munson, maybe Fels.

Anyone playing in the 141 qualifiers? They have one 4-22 at G-Cue in chicago. I plan on spectating that one.

Later, Dennis
