OR, Have Their Gums Tattooed Like A Racehorse

Williebetmore sed:
Boradriver is helping with nametags (yet another new nametag system for next year - we'll keep changing until we get it right).

I still think that the only answer is Tattoos. Tattoo their names on them.

Smorg,
Your suggestion has been noted (I believe you have offered this one in the past). I have voted in favor of this requirement; but for some reason the other organizers will just not go along - go figure.

Well, make it more attractive to them. In addition to their names across their foreheads, offer them a Free 'butterfly' just above their buttcrack...

Okay, it's never too soon to start planning. IF YOU HAVE SUGGESTIONS OR WANT TO VOLUNTEER, then this thread is the place.

Here is the official scoop for 2008 (after considering all of the debate in the other threads).

Steve Lomako and I will be the room organizers.

The name of the room will still be "The AZBilliards/onepocket.org Forum Members Room" out of respect for the contributions to the game of pool made by Mike Howerton and Steve Booth (and because we are too lazy to change - if they want to slip us some donations that's cool, if not, that's cool too).

Greg Sullivan has told us we can have the room with 2 tables in 2008; he WOULD like us to sponsor some sort of mini-tournament or professional challenge when we are able financially (and he will provide whatever equipment we need to run it). EVERYONE who donates to the room should realize that some of the donated money may be used for prize money for such an event (though room members will definitely have ring-side seats for any such event) - it didn't happen this year, it may not happen next year, but be aware. Thoughts have been a rotation match between Efren and a top U.S. player (Pat Fleming would like to add such a match to his Accu-Stats catalog) or a Schmidt-Pagulayan straight pool re-match.

We are having a "DCC 10th Anniversary" banner made as a gift to Greg - we would like all tournament players in 2008 to sign it as they check in at the desk - a nice keepsake for Greg.

Sizl is making us another small banner; which we will use for signing/fundraising purposes in the room itself.

Boradriver is helping with nametags (yet another new nametag system for next year - we'll keep changing until we get it right).

We will again start signing up room members in the Fall, and again will cut off donations in mid-December (we just CAN'T sacrifice the holidays to DCC scut work). Cost for playing privileges will probably be $25 - $30. With 2 tables, I believe more people got their money's worth this year (it's freaking tough to find a table elsewhere in the venue to use).

We will have a list on the door and in the room of members with playing privileges. We will also list the pro's that are welcome to play for free (since everyone and their brother claimed to be a pro this year). We will list all pro's (of note) that have ever visited the room, and all pro's that we would like to visit the room. That way they will be on the list, and have a nametag already waiting for them.

We are soliciting volunteers for "Room Goon" status. They will just check in the room periodically, make sure the tables are being used according to plan, and bring any problems to the attention of the room organizers. They are also authorized to administer a severe beating to breakup if they wish (and who wouldn't????). Thoughts so far are bignasty, JCIN, and stevelomako. Any other volunteers???

We will try to have snacks and soda's available throughout the week IF we can find volunteers to run for them (all volunteers this year had NO CAR).

We will again try to have a one-pocket Celebrity Scotch Doubles and an 8-ball Celebrity Scotch Doubles event. The organizer (me) will try to do a better job getting the word out, and try to schedule them for later in the week when there can be more participation.

I have an idea that just might work here. The professional challenge could be Playing One Pocket Against the Ghost. Give all pro players five tries to see who can run the most balls total. This would be interesting to watch and very challenging as well. I think the players and the fans (us) would enjoy it. It could be called the "AZ One Pocket Challenge". How do you like it Steve?

I'm willing to make a $100 contribution to the prize fund. Let's see if we can raise a $1,000. That way the winner can get $500 and pay down a few places. With no entry (or better yet, all pro players must pay $10 for one try or $25 for three tries). We add that money to the prize fund. Maybe making it a $1,000 Added event.

I'm just thinking out loud here. Anyone may chime in with their thoughts.

Jay,
I like the idea very much. I like the idea of us putting up the prize money (no entry fee) as an incentive for pro's to visit the room. Maybe limit the attempts (???3, 4, or 5???) - we don't want the tables tied up too much with solo play; and like to encourage the pro's to "spar" with the forum members.

I think we also need to have a list of "invited pro's" or all 500 contestants in the one-pocket tournament will want to try their hand. Perhaps we can even try to invite them ahead of time.

We also need to run this by Greg S.; he does like to have things like this available for public viewing. While we welcome all who want to watch, the space for viewing is limited. Also, we don't want to steal any of Bob Jewett's thunder (hopefully he will be doing the straight pool challenge again).

Willie,

I don't know how workable this is? Maybe Steve Booth can chime in. What if it were an Invitational event with only the top 15 or 20 One Pocket players invited? They get like three tries each. A free roll at a purse of $1,000 with the winner getting $500, $300 for second and $200 for third. I think every player invited would go for that, and try their hardest to win.

We could put it to a vote on azbilliards who should be invited and the top vote getters are the ones who play. I don't see where it conflicts in any way with what Bob Jewett does with the Straight Pool challenge. I would be willing to assist with this since it is my idea.

Sounds like some good ideas -- especially the 'Playing the Ghost' idea. I will give this some thought, too.

I like the energy Jay Helfert would bring to something along these lines.

Maybe either invitational (no entry fee) or some combination of invitational and open (other players would pay a small entry fee to compete?)

It could easily feature a 'final' -- the two finalists alternating racks in a five (or more) rack race to the highest count for the cash.

You could even have the racks progressively worth more...

how about a feature match?

how about a feature match between to top usa players like oh maybe john schmidt and oh maybe shane van boening in the az room since they both post on here and that way we can charge the railbirds and spectators a small fee to get in and use the money towards the pro challenge! im sure shane will do it! i think that would be a grteat idea and i would buy 4 front row seats! and im sure others on herte would agree that is a match we have all wanted to see for a long time! 9 ball race to 25 they can determine the stakes! it would be a good way fo shane and john to give back to the room! i know shane will do this! if you like the idea willie let me know ill start working on getting ahold of mr. schmidt!

ok don now i need 5 seats up front! told you that runnin in the action room would pay off for ya!:D

webcam?

What's the possibility of having a webcam in the room?

I have never been to the DCC, and would like to go, but can't see it happening in the forseeable future.....however, I would pay $10-$20 for web cam access, to keep abreast of the 'happenings'.

I Hope to make it to the BCA Event

I am planning on coming this year and will help all I can , I really enjoyed the 1st year . I have been Out of Commission for a while due to health issues and am looking forward to meeting everyone again ! I am just sorry I couldn't help out as much last year but I was busy with the BCA event across the street !(It was my 1st year there as a player) The room is growing in potential year after year like a few of us thought it would (OHB and some of the other oldtimers) lol, I am just sorry about not being able to commit sooner ! I apologize for my infrequent postings but I do intend to stick with the room on a yearly basis as I really do enjoy the DCC .......

Tom S.- needs to be committed lol !

Hi Willie,

]I plan to be in Louisville on the 4th and hope to stay until the end, one of the percs of being retired, keep me posted on when and where to send my share of the expenses.

Hope this e-mail finds you well.

Willie, I did not want to read all the other post, what are the hours the AZ room will be open, is it going 24/7, I will be glad to volunteer on the 1st Friday or Sat for a couple of hours.

P&P,
The AZB room is open 24/7 (only closes if no one is there - for security purposes).

The volunteers we've requested are for things like nametags (boradriver doing it this year; BANKONIT last year; me the year before that) and banners (sizl has volunteered for that duty), and "room goon" (JCIN, bignasty, and stevelomako so far have agreed to serve).

We can still use volunteers to run for soda, ice, & snacks (will be paid for from the room fund, but we still need someone to go get it).

I live not to far from the event, so you can pencil me in for a snack runner for a few days and room goon for a while
