Big Chang wins a nail biter...9-8

I hate alternate break....this is a championship, for Heaven’s sake.

1st-round USA results:

Van Boening, Thorpe, and Deuel won.

Lombardo, Tokoph, and Hart lost.

Chang breaks has shot on 1 but 1 to 2 is tough. Makes nice shot from 1 to 2 and runs out. Chang wins after trailing 1-5 and 5-8. Kwon couldn't close.

Marlon, Grabe, Thorsten go to 1 loss side.

Most matches quite close unlike All Japan which had many matches with big margin wins . Probably cos All Japan is Winners break while this ia Alt break.
Only whitewash John Morra over his opponent :grin-square:

Some of the best Pinoy players are not entered, most notably Dennis Orcullo, Warren Kiamco, Roberto Gomez and Lee Vann Corteza, not to mention Efren and Francisco. From the USA, no Skyler or Tyler on the list either. I think some people prefer not to go to Qatar for personal reasons. I know I have no interest in visiting there.

According to their announcement, most of the Pinoys are playing here:
Pacquiao 40th Birthday 10-Ball Tournament in Gensan
Other pool masters vying in the event are defending champion Jerico Banares, Dennis Orcollo, Carlo Biado, Lee Vann Corteza, Johann Chua, Jeffrey Ignacio, Warren Kiamco, Antonio Oacan Gabica, Michael Feliciano, Raymund Faraon, Oliver Bingcoy Medenilla, Demosthenes “Plong-Plong” Pulpul , Val Pajuay, Jonas Magpantay, Elvis Calasang, John Rebong, Rodrigo Geronimo, Patrick Gonzales and Eric E. Bayhon.

ALL the Filipino players will play in Manny's events. It's like free money for them, right in their own back yard. Travel is cheap in the Philippines and the hotels are inexpensive as well.

Marek got to 1.

Manalo is playing again? I remember him from the IPT days.

Manila, Philippines---"The Marvelous Captain" Marlon Manalo earned spots in the knockout stage of the prestigious 2018 World 9-Ball Championship being held the Al-Attiya Sports Arena of the Al-Arabi Sports Club in Doha, Qatar.

The affable cue artist and chairman of Barangay Malamig in Mandaluyong City who is also the "League of the Barangay's president" outclassed Mohammad Alshammari of Kuwait, 7-1, Lee Junho of South Korea, 7-1, Zaid Alsherayti of Syria, 7-5, Ip Tung Pong of Hongkong, 7-4, Toh Lian Han of Singapore, 7-1, and compatriots Roberto Brillantes, 7-1 and Adonis Santos of the Philippines, 7-6, respectively in the group stage qualifying event.

His next assignment is Meshaal Al Murdhi of Kuwait. Al Murdhi, meantime defeated Samir Waheed of Kuwait, 7-1, Meneleo Migellano of the Philippines, 7-2, Kwon Hojun of South Korea, 7-1, Saki Kanatlar of Turkey, 7-6, and Nikolaos Malaj of Greece, 7-4, in order.

As part of his preparation, Manalo kept himself in shape by practicing daily in his own pool hall in Talumpung, Mandaluyong and famous Star Billiards Center in Grace Village, Quezon City, hosted by long-time sports patron Sebastian "Baste" Chua.

"I hope to sustain my winning run here," said Manalo, whose stint is being supported by his long-time benefactors Solar Sports head Ronald Tieng and Mandaluyong City mayor Carmelita “Menchie” Aguilar Abalos.

The winner of the 2018 World 9-ball Championship will receive $30,000. The runner up will receive $15,000. The total prize fund is $200,000.

Defeding champion is Carlo Biado of the Philippines who brought down countryman Roland Garcia, 13-5, in the last year's final. Just a few days ago the Pampanga native Garcia stormed through a stacked field of great Pinoy cueists to win the Manny Pacquiao Open in General Santos City to receive the top prize P500,000 to tournament director Elman "Aris" Sacayanan.-Marlon Bernardino-

Agree!

That's why I'm hoping MR gets involved next year. But I honestly don't know if WPA has some sort of hold on the World Championship.

What I do know is that MR won't get involved if they don't think it will be successful. I think that's why the US Open in April is so important.

The event is owned by the WPA and they effectively licence it to promoters as they did to us from 1999-2007. At the moment they are contractually bound to the Qatar Billiards and Snooker Federation. Who knows what the future will bring!

Thanx for responding.

2019 WPA World 10 Ball Championship brought to you by Matchroom.

:idea2:

Does anyone know if Johan is in Qatar with the US players?
If so, I'm expecting Shane rolls to victory this year if he is getting coach Johan strategy and psychology between matches.

Several things about the matches so far are incorrect in that article. Perhaps boxing doesn't have pool-type flowcharts and formats to decipher.

Mika eliminated this morning.

Down 8-4, and was running out, but missed a very routine 7 ball. Turned around and shook his opponent's hand. Didn't play well at all. It happens.
