YOUR OPINION:

Two players of equal speed playing 6-ball. Player A spots player B the 5 and the break.

Which player has the best of it and by how much? I think I know the answer, but I'm curious to know what the Hulkamaniacs at home think.

Dave

player B has the best of it, if player player B is a strong player like SVB strong-you need his break, the other 99.9999999% of the time its best to give it up-the break stops most players.

Sorry guys but I like the guy getting the 5 and the breaks. Making a ball on the break is a big advantage, when he makes a ball he can at least control the table and many times run out. If he doesn't make a ball a good percentage of the time his opponent may not have a starting shot, the 5 ball spot then comes into play.

As the breaker if he finds a sweet spot he then can string some together. His opponent will have a difficult time putting packages together. I would always take this spot with an equal skill player.

=)

In six ball I think you can give someone that plays the same speed as you do the last three and the break unless they have a monster break.. and Still its going to be close..

The 5 and the breaks arent a deadly spot...... but it is still a spot that shouldnt be taken lightly. If he finds a good spot on the table to break from where he is pocketing a ball more than 50-60% of his breaks..... it can indeed be deadly.
To give an accurate comparison to other spots would be difficult. IMO it would be like giving the 6 out and the breaks in 9 ball.
In other words.... if he can consistantly run an open 3 ball pattern successfully with the cueball on the right side of the next object ball, and is pocketing something on the breaks...... we have a winner.

I gotta say I like the person who is getting the 5 and the breaks. Since they start off controlling the game (by breaking) they can adapt to the situation. If they find a sweet spot for breaking and are consistently making a ball on the break, the other guy has no chance.

On the other hand, if the break isn't working they can always soft/safe break. Break just hard enough for a legal break, and follow the cueball to the end rail. With more few clusters and no shot, the opponent will have a lot of work to do.

Dave,
I think its a gaff game. A road player of my acquaintance believes that Player A is stealing. It's very tough to make a ball on the break; and there is usually a shot or safety on the 1 ball when Player A comes to the table (less congestion).

Damnit Dave....it appears no one was familiar with the gaff - we could have won a FORTUNE at DCC with this one.

I'll back Dave against anyone on the Forum (including pro's) if he is player A, and if a power break is required. Hell, I'll back myself too. Could be fun if we could get a couple of the pro's to give this a go against some of the members at DCC...maybe an AZB room prize for the pro that can outrun the gaff (short races).

They are equal speed, but what speed is that?

Two D players.... well, who knows what could happens. The break isnt a huge spot, but the ball could be.

Two A or above players... well, its all about the break. The ball spot means very little at that point.

Just from my experience, in 6 ball, if you give up the break, you are getting the spot. It's hard to make a ball on the break in 6 ball. Although I have done a 6 pack, and then had it put back on me. But, that is the exception, not the rule.

If you can play decent, you are going to run out after his failed break.

I would try to play a defensive break as to where to place the cue ball as far away from the 1 that you can....

Every once in awhile I learn something on AZ. Back in the 1950's and 60's my dad use to give me the break in 6-ball for a buck a game. My own Dad put the hustle on me. Hard to believe. Johnnyt

I wouldn't take the 5 and the breaks in 6 personally....hard to make a ball. Looks good on paper.

Now 7 ball I'd happily take that spot.

2 equal players and one gets the 5 and the break?? well, narrow it down....

the 5 is an obvious adnatage, right? 1/3 of the balls are money for him, half that (1/6) for the other guy!

so the break would have to outweigh that 5 for the non-breaker. considering all the crap that happens after the break when the player doesnt make a ball, like not having a good shot, having a ball tied up or even being snookered...... anyway, i wont write out all the considerations, but i think the player with the 5 and the breaks is favored (esp for big money, and even more esp if he's smart enough to not scratch a lot, if ever).

i think you're getting this confused with giving a kinda bad player a spot. its easy for a good player to give a bad playere the 5 and the breaks and they all think "ive got a great break" and proceed to get robbed. but dont go telling all your friends that :)

Most here that favor giving up the spot are assuming that if no ball is made on the break the other guy is automatically running out. Rotation games are not that easy.

By the way the head ball in the side and the end ball four rails to the corner are fairly consistant once you find the hit and speed.
