Great movie for sure, but .....

Eddie did hustle a couple of guys and when he beat them, they broke his thumbs. The image of the pool gambler being beaten by those he beats at the table does little for pool's image. Eddie also happily participated in the hustle of a wealthy three cushion player in Louisvile. Finally, Eddie's stakehorse, left out of some winning action in the film's final scene, threatened him with violence. The Hustler, by my account, was not exactly a testament to the integrity of pool players or those who travel in their circles.

Say what you want, but The Hustler absolutely revived pool in America. The sport just took off after this movie came out. The interesting thing then (and now) is that people are attracted to the seamier side of life and a counter culture like the pool world. I've always felt that a reality show based on real players shooting pool for money is the best thing we could ever get on television (I even made a pilot called High Stakes Pool). Of course tournament pool for large purses wouldn't hurt either, but that doesn't look like it's going to happen anytime soon. Just my two cents in the matter. And I may get some change back. ;)

I would love to see something like that.

Thanks 9 Ball. Do you know anything more about it.
If you do, fill us in.
Now that one, I'd easily pay for.

9-ball the movie

I am a little surprised at the comments in this thread.

I cannot even imagine all of the things tht have to happen in order to make a movie.

You guys a being pretty brutal after just seeing a short trailer!

I don't expect a Hollywood film - but I admire Tony Palma for keeping focused and grinding out to the finish.

It ain't easy!
I think if you can't do better- perhaps you should respect what has been done.

Mark Griffin

Sorry to disappoint you blue hog Ridr but I checked the movie's website & it has dissapeared & it has been over 500 days since the movies official twitter feed has been used, that & the fact only 6 tweets have been sent out in those 500 or so days.

Sorry but it looks like the movie is dead.

I agree that the movie should be respected. However, simply because it is difficult to produce a film does not mean it isn't open to criticism. Hell, EVERY movie in Hollywood is INCREDIBLY difficult to create. If it was easy we'd all do it!

Although they tried, some very basic fundamental decisions about the film are just so horrid. We're not saying they didn't work hard or that it was easy to do - we're saying it's horrible and will likely not stand up to the non-pool player's expectations of an entertaining movie, much less to the pool players'.

The internet never fails to reinforce the fact that people today are incredibly negative. And that they revel in bringing other people down, safely behind their keyboards...

Why does everyone have to be so negative about this trailer? I've watched a lot of movies and TV over the years, and sure, this doesn't look like a Speilberg production. But other than Jeanette's corny line about the tiara, I didn't see anything about the trailer that should make people crap all over this. I thought it looked decent enough, and I'm interested in seeing it.

Of course, when I watch a movie, I want to to be entertained, and to enjoy myself. When you start from that position, its easier to like stuff. As opposed to wanting something to be bad or to fail, which apparently is new normal.

This world would be a lot better if more people could see the good in something as opposed to the bad.

(No, I don't want to sit around and sing kumbaya. Yes, I can find fault with things, and often do. But to come on here and treat this trailer with such vitriol simply amazes me.)

Here's an interesting article, but it's the only thing I could find at the time of this writing in the print media:

A film drama about the competitive world of women's professional billiards filmed partially in Pottsville will premiere Tuesday in Baltimore, Md., Samantha Lathrop, an associate producer with Main Street Productions, Philadelphia, said this week.

"I'd be happy to have a Pottsville screening. I didn't know the film was done," Amy S. Burkhart, executive director of Pottsville Area Development Corp., said Nov. 13.

PADCO manages the Sovereign Majestic Theater, a nonprofit performing arts 224-seat venue at 209 N. Centre St., Pottsville.

Burkhart said she will make an effort to get in touch with Main Street Production to discuss the possibility of a screening of "9-Ball" in Pottsville.

"Yes, we are working with your local theater for a date, possibly in the beginning of December. We will let you know when we have a firm date," Anthony Palma, the film's writer, director and executive producer, said Tuesday.

The film's premiere will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Charles Theater, 1711 N. Charles St., Baltimore, Md. Tickets at the door will be $9 each, Lathrop said.

People from Pottsville who aren't able to make the three-hour drive to Baltimore that day can order the DVD. It will be available Tuesday from www.mainstreetproductions.com, Lathrop said.

The film's crew started scouting locations in Pottsville in July 2010.

In May 2011, the crew filmed scenes in the city. Locations included the 700 block of North Centre Street. In June, the crew wrapped up production by filming scenes in city at locations which included Club 18, 110 N. 18th St.

"'9-Ball' was filmed primarily in Pottsville, Pa., and Glen Burnie, Md., locations due to the concentrated billiards community and local support of the film's production," Lathrop said.

The movie stars a few international pool champions, including Jennifer Barretta who plays as "Gail," a young woman striving to become a pro.

A Norristown native, Barretta has resided in Manhattan for more than 20 years. A champion 9-ball player, she achieved "touring pro" status with the Women's Professional Billiards Association in October 2003. In December 2004, she defeated the top-ranked player during an ESPN-televised match. She said she won her first international title in 2006, the Empress Cup in Korea.

Known for her movie-star looks, Barretta was voted into ESPN's "25 Sexiest Female Athletes of 2005" and the top 16 "Sexiest Female Athletes of 2008."

Is anyone here seriously saying they can judge a movie by its trailer?

If so, you're a better judge than 99% of Hollywood directors and producers who will admit that they can't do that.

I've seen fantastic trailers for movies that I walked on in the first 15 minutes...and movies that I thought about for days even though I thought the trailer was horrible.

To me the elements of a good movie are 1) the story, 2) the dialogue and 3) the acting. 9-Ball definitely has the first (man wants woman to do something she doesn't want to do - universal story). 2 and 3 are unknowns based on the trailer.

The potential downside might be that the movie has too many "pool" scenes because the principals like pool a lot more than the general public. Pool is hardly as exciting as a horse race or boxing match.

Hey, there's an idea....let's make a movie called "One-Pocket" Snnnoooorrrrre.

I haven't posted an opinion one way or another about the movie, since, I haven't seen it. I probably won't whatever my opinionated-not-using-my-real-name-as-my-screen-name judgmental review is. It will be rated on a scale of 1-10 in my etch-a-sketch and then shaken vigorously for reasons of Leave-No-Child-Behind feel-goodery.

My question is:

Am I allowed to have my own opinion or must I love the movie because it has pool players and (presumably) pool tables in it?

.

Something like 3 years ago, there was a truly bad clip posted online. This trailer is much better! Worth 90 minutes of my life and up to $10 to see it. Hopefully, they can get it on iTunes or some other VOD platform accessible through AppleTV, Roku, or something similar.

Its has nothing to do with hiding behind keyboards but giving thoughts about a movie trailer on a
open forum where opinions are given. If I think it looks like crap,
which I do,I would say this on here or anywhere else.
For me I never say anything on here that I wouldn't say to anybody
in person.
Should we say it looks awesome if we really don't, or are we only
allowed to type positive comments only?

The impression I got was the pool player was like a hooker and the stakehorse was the abusive pimp. Not really helping pools image.

Did anyone watch the videos on that site of the "trick shots"? Since when is Jennifer Barretta one of the best female pool players?????? Where have I been and how much has she been practicing?

She's ranked seventh on the WPBA tour. That means she's one of the best. As you seemed to suspect, she has worked very hard at her game and has made significant advances in the last twelve to eighteen months.

Sorry, it is pool related, so I have to support it and buy it ... but probably going to toss it in the "never going to watch" bin.

I wonder how popular a pool movie with Efren and Earl not quite showing their "stuff" while dressed in a couple of banana hammocks would sell.

Mine was a general commentary on the non-stop negativity that is prevalent here. It wasn't directed specifically at you, and of course you should speak your mind, if you so feel.

Perhaps I shouldnt open my big fat mouth and hope for some positive thoughts in this world.
Sorry if I offended you.

I'm thinking a break is in order. Wonder if I can pull it off? I doubt it.
