A Diet for Pool

I'm sure everyone here would agree that you play better when you feel more comfortable, and there are a lot of things that factor into that feeling. I wanted to open this thread as an open discussion about food (or drink) that is particularly good at making you feel comfortable for a match.

For me, I play the worst when I have overstuffed myself with really terrible food like McDonald's, followed closely by having an empty, growling stomach. I have felt the best shooting when I eat something light like a salad. Obviously people have different responses to alcohol, but I was going to try to steer away from that discussion on this thread (at least at first).

What are foods of choice for the players on here when you have a big match? Do you keep powerbars in your case, and how do you deal with long tournaments where you need to eat in between matches? I'm interested in other people's secrets.

Beef jerky more beef jerky and of coarse cold Miller Lite!

For the gaseous emissions alone, that works in inflicting a handicap upon your opponent. All you have to do is lag, intentionally lose the lag, let one go, and go to the other side of the table to rack the balls. Then watch your opponent, at the head end of the table as the "victor" of the lag, first turn green, and then collapse.

If you want to accentuate the effect, do this on St. Patrick's Day, after you've had an Irish jigs meal (i.e. corned beef and cabbage). Top-off with a couple spicy Slim Jims (the real big/long ones), and a pint of Guinness. I think this technique was used in northern Ireland decades ago, as one of the first terrorist uses of poison gas. :p

A Caesar Salad with seven anchovies. And lots of Coors Light.

Freddie <~~~ knows the winning combination

Obviously another "generator of noxious gas for the opponent." :D

But the Caesar salad (or a Cobb salad) with or without the anchovies is actually good brain food that metabolizes quickly in the body, while minimizing the sleepy / doped feeling.

I find that if I eat anything "heavy" -- either in proteins (e.g. steak) or carbohydrates (e.g. pasta) -- tends to slow me down. At least at first; I get the normal "let me lie down for a Navy nooner nap" feeling. Later on, though, the long-term energy afforded by such a heavy meal is great for long periods of pool.

no coffee

Good point! I did intend to highlight this. I know several shooters who indulge in coffee before they shoot. Is it a way to abate the daily addiction to the stuff, or does it provide heightened senses for some?

For me I get a little more jittery than I would like, but maybe that's because I don't really drink coffee on the regular.

Thoughts?

coffee

the food we eat is so un-healthy anymore.
i dont drink alcohol ...............................................................

Pasta, salad, and some garlic bread two hours before I plan on beginning to play.. Lots of water before, during and then a couple beers after I am done...

I like fruit and maybe some peanut butter crackers.

Also, I've taken quite a liking to "Buddy Fruit" or something like that.

It's basically all natural applesauce with other fruit flavors mixed in. They come in 3.2 oz. packages. You can down 2-3 in a row and it's actually not bad for you at all. It's all natural. They have Strawberry, Banana, Cinnamon, regular Apple, Peach, etc. etc.

They're about $0.80 a piece or so in my neck of the woods.

They're also easy to sneak into your case, if bringing in outside stuff is frowned upon.

I don't mind spending money in a pool hall, but honestly, it's mostly junk food and that doesn't help me out at all.

I couldn't resist

I stole this from Freddy Bentivegna's Website (bankingwiththebeard.com). Maybe he won't mind if I recommend his site to anyone interested in the game of pool. To quote Fred:

A pool hustler’s gourmet menu:

Lunch:
Filet ala Oscar, and a pine float.
(Boloney sandwich, and a toothpick in a glass of water.)

Evening dinner:
Entree of Grilled Tube steak. Finish with Chateau Le Thunder Bird.
(A hot dog and a fifth of T-Bird wine — it used to cost 60 cents a bottle)

Most of you know due to my posts that I am not shy about drinking beer.
I don't eat or much if anything before league night. During a longer afternoon of tournament play I will usually have a house salad to keep the
hunger pangs away.

Things like chicken wings and fries, burgers etc, fill a person up not in a good way and I find my game will suffer if my tummy is suffering.

I dunno...tube steak means something very different to me.

I recommend maryjane and jaegermeister. Works every time...give it a try!?
