A message from Emily Duddy to all pool players

But even so does this mean the ladies have to be able to compete with the men to be considered great players in their own right? Do the other female athletes of other sports have to be able to compete w/ the men to be acknowledged? Golf, tennis, basketball, skiing, swimming, etc. etc... I mean the list goes on and on.

No. The women do NOT have to be able to compete with the men. But they do need to be able to compete with each other. No one is saying that Emily isn't as good as some of the male pros. The point we're making is that she can't compete with the other female pros. She's not on their level. She may be ranked 20th, but its because she competes in more events than a lot of others. Look at the rankings. You can find a number of women who play stronger than she does, but are ranked lower. Why? Because they don't play every event because the WPBA is in such shambles.

I think we can all agree that those rankings, even for the male pros, don't mean diddly squat. For example, how many American so-called "pros" can afford to travel to the events that Shane and Johnny, who are both sponsored, attend? Not very many, though I did read where Brandon Shuff is going to Colombia with Johnny at a word pro tournament.

Look at the so-called "pro" (Shanelle Loraine) that Charlie Williams advertises via Dragon Promotions. She's not able to keep up with the majority of professional players, but she's touting herself as a professional pool player. Because of it, she is getting paid: Hand Cream Silk. :p

It was often said that Minnesota Fats couldn't keep up with the best of 'em, but because of his gift of gab, he made more money than the rest of 'em, if you catch my drift. ;)

People might look good on paper résumés, but most of the written C.V.'s are embellishments of the person's accomplishments in their chosen industry.

The sky is the limit in the American pool world today. There ain't no tours, and everybody is a free agent. If they can make something happen, then more power to them. As Vince Lombardi used to say, there's three kinds of people in this world: those who make things happen, those who watch what happened, and those who wonder what happened.

Looks to me like Emily Duddy is making things happen. Good for her!

I have some questions for Emily, What do you think qualifies someone as a pro either men or women? at what point can someone call them selves a pro? I would just like to see how someone that calls them selves pro feels about this.

I'm not Emily, but FWIW, a pro is a person who is engaged in a certain activity, or occupation, for gain or compensation as means of livelihood.

We've got a lot of pro AzB-ers on the forum. Just take a glance at the Wanted/For Sale subforum.

I was looking for the opinion from someone that calls them selves a pro. I know how to use Wikipedia too lol. I think there should some sort of qualifying process similar to golf, there are tons of golf pros out there and a vast majority wont beat Tiger on his worst day but they are professional golfers.

Well, I probably know how to use Wikipedia better than most on this forum. :o

I may know a little more about pro-caliber pocket billiards than most on this forum, as well.

To that end, it is not possible to compare pool in the United States to golf. The analogy is not even close. You're talking about a country that broadcasts hotdog eating championships and lawn mower races more often than pool. What does that tell you?! :(

If Charlie Williams can label his 14.1 tournament a "world championship," I think anybody who plays pool for profit can call themselves a "pro." ;)

Hey, I eat hotdogs. Does that mean I'm at least an amateur?

Did you even read the original post in this thread -- try reading that first and then correct your post here.

I did read the first post I meant for everyone who has ever been on the forum or picked up a mag, emily pulled jen b into the mix and everyone left her there.

Yes you are an amature and if you practice enough you may get to the big show lol

Pool would need so much help before we could start to have qualifications to be pro. What I meant by all the golf pros was that not all pros are world beaters, the way some of these guys are judging pros there would only be a handful,There isnt many that can play Shane or Denis even.

And therein lies the rub. You hit the nail right on the head. The fact that there is only a few, such as Shane and Dennis, to compare people to is the problem. ;)

my original wording was Jen was ABOVE 99.9% of the female pool players and she is. Thats what i meant-The second time the wording was poor but i think you know what i meant. I didnt word it like i was writing a contract-my mistake.

I wasn't speaking of you nostroke, you hit it right on the head.i just felt like it wasn't right that Emily named jen with herself and borana and then the people commenting focused a lot on her.
if it was Allison or Karen they would have separated her immediately was my point

To me this reaks of a man who can not measure up against other male players and needs some one to be better than... Just saying!

You are consistently making the most retarded statements in this thread, repeatedly. I don't have the English to express just how stupid you sound accusing "us men" of jealousy. That is not what is operating here, nor is it sexism, nor is it "hating." Stop making excuses for other people, it's helping no one.

Just saying!

That's not a big statement. That's about like me or you saying we play better than 99.9% of poolplayers in the world. (which is also most likely true if you can make a ball)

Oh yeah- i know- your message was clear to me from the start-plus i had a hint of your position from one of the streams.

Rodney Morris plays just as good as anyone. No one is in a class by themselves.

Rodney Morris plays just as good as anyone, I'm not sure why he isn't mentioned as much. Someone posted on Face Book yesterday that he had beat Shane the last 5 out of 6 times. And Johnny and Earl obviously play the same speed, Earl just finished 2nd in a big 10 Ball tournament in Sweden a few days ago and is in the final three of another 9 Ball tournament today with Mika and Marcus. Shane is a great player, but he's by no means in a class by himself and neither is Dennis or Bustemante. On a given day these players can all beat each other, no one has the "nuts" unless they have some kind of "home table" advantage.

This is why threads like these nothing good can come out of these. Hurt feelings and name calling is the only thing that will ever come out of these, its a no win situation. My suggestion is to let this post die. Everyone should just agree to disagree....

PS.. Jam Say hi to Keith

True dat! It's more like some players are afforded the opportunities more often than others.

I'm not sure why Earl is in Europe, but I'm going to venture a guess that somebody paid his way. Nothing wrong with that, mind you, but it's an opportunity afforded to Earl that maybe Rodney didn't get.

No lies to tell

Emily, I have no lies to tell, I'd love to see you on top. I'd love to see Barona and Jennifer on top, too. I know to be at the top of those rankings would mean a lot to all 3 of you ladies and I wish y'all the best. As far as respect goes, I play as hard as I can against a female player as I do a male player. I know the female players are a threat at the table just like the men and if you don't respect their abilities you could lose your match in a heartbeat. Best of luck in the future on your goals.

P.S. Keep those photo shoots coming, too.
