***A New Era In Pool Coverage***

I'm a little surprised at the lack of feedback on this project. Maybe someone would be interested in telling us what sort of content you'd like to see (or NOT see)?

Nate,

I have a feeling that the "lack of feedback" is not so much the fact that it's not interesting, moreso that people don't know what to expect. Kinda like a "wait and see" stance. I thought your clip had great production quality.

I'm sure when you put it out there, you'll get more feedback. Hopefully, it will go viral.

To clarify this, each issue has a feature, be it focused on a player, specific event, or a cultural editorial (such as our planned trip to the Philippines). The "Day in the life of Mika Immonen" is only a small portion of Issue #1, and was chosen based on Mika's popularity, and the fact that Mika is a friend of mine. Similarly, the feature on Earl Strickland is also only one section in Issue #2. Future issues will concentrate on key International players, including top female players.

The bulk of each issue does not follow a preset format, but rather just allows us to focus on whatever we feel is most interesting and relevant at the time. This can include tournament footage, tons of behind the scenes content (you won't believe how much ridiculous stuff goes on), a segment where players showcase and repeat famous shots throughout history, etc.

On TV, these players are portrayed as robots who systematically pocket balls without any emotion. You don't know who to cheer for, as the players are not given opportunity to show their personalities. It's no wonder the sport is suffering in viewership.

The idea of the Runout Media Video Magazine is to change this. We want to bring out the interesting aspects and personalities within the sport. Not scores or news, but community and culture.....content that will still be relevant in years to come.

Personally, I think this "behind the scenes" aspect is a great idea. Almost none of the top players keep an active blog and in this day of the internet, lots and lots of people follow blogs, not having an active one is a problem I think. Mika does an okay job; he's super busy, but at least he makes an attempt to keep it mostly current. :)

I'm looking forward to this project, I think it's hard to really get a good idea how it's going to work until at least the first edition is released. After that, I would expect feedback will come a lot easier.

I just saw this thread today. Sorry to hear about the accident!

My initial reaction would be that I couln't afford the $99/yr rate until I get more sales myself. :) The video preview looks awesome, the production is world-class. I don't expect the production to be a limiting factor!

I'm fearful for the business model though. Hopefully you can get some sponsor money very quickly. Travelling and operating costs will be substantial. You'll need to advertise in the mags / blogs / forums of course. If you can post some exciting snippets on youtube/ect, that'd get some easy clicks back to you.

I still think that the market for a $99/yr sub is going to be too small. :/

That is GREAT! I love the music in the background of the intro trailer.

I think pool could use something like this. Sometimes pool folk, because of maybe work schedules or family responsibilities, are unable and cannot watch pool live on PPV, but to watch it like this, when you have time to watch it, well, this fills a void in the pool world, I think.

Wishing you all the best success in your future endeavors on this! I'd say best of luck, but I don't think you're going to need any luck. This will be a great resource to all pool aficionados everywhere. :)

I thought I expressed some interest. I'm a "someone."

This has also crossed my mind, but then I think about TAR and such. If they can pull 300+ viewers at $35 for a 3 day gig, what's to stop me from pulling 1000+ at $99 for an entire year?

Also consider that TAR events are for die hard pool junkies who can sit through 190+ racks of pool straight. That itself is a far smaller demographic than my video magazine aims to entice.

Also consider Mikas instructional DVDs. Now that is a tough demographic! Only die hard players will pay $80 for pool DVDs, however most die hard players are already quite capable and don't need instructional videos. It's a catch 22. And yet, I've sold over 2500 sets now in less than 2 years. And that's in this horrible economy!

Don't get me wrong, your concern is one that echoes in my mind on a near daily basis, however I strongly feel that my high production value and ability to get up close and personal with the players is something the billiard world could benefit from.

Anyway...maybe I'm just trying to convince myself it will work....but I pray I'm not mistaken. I guess only time will tell.

it's usually not a good business model to limit your viewers..

I would suggest setting up a discounted rate for the yearly and a higher rate for the individual access.

Say, 15$ per episode and or 99/year, 60/ 6 months.

Something to think about...

I think this is a great idea but the pool world is brutal (hence lack of response) - hopefully your work will get noticed and hopefully people will share your coverage so you can get the coverage you need to make it all worthwhile. Your biggest obstacle is getting the amateurs and people away from the azb world to partake in your coverage. The problem is, people have a hard time or lack of desire to watch pool but with bringing new concepts into your video you may hit on something. Next obstacle is the economy :)

Camera car wreck insurance

Look into your homeowners/renters insurance policy. Often items in your car (or away from the home) are included on the policy (with the deductibles).
F.Y.I.

I've looked into this already, and one camera MAY be covered. The other one and the rest of the equipment however does not qualify, as it's more than 60 or 90 since the time of purchase.

Thanks for the suggestion though. :)

I already asked about that in a PM nancewayne. He just recently moved and didn't have time to get homeowners insurance set up.

Very cool, A video billiard magazine! Featured Instructors? Legends? Tournament announcements? Set up like a sports desk with an announcer and interviews? Or maybe more like the best Damn sports show format? Field reporters? Any ideas on length? 15 min. 1/2 hour ,or more? Sounds like alot of fun to me!! I can see this becoming very very big! Don

Thanks for the input Jaden. Luckily this was already issue was already addressed in my initial post.

Nope. In fact, it will be exactly the opposite of this. :p

(I'm actually serious :))

The estimated running time for each issue will be just over an hour.

I watched the 40 or so second trailer, but it doesn't really give you any depth to get a feel for what your content is actually going to be like. It looks from the vid that you have great video editing skills, and the idea of the project sounds great, so my anticipation is on high alert, but I don't see how I can give feedback on the project itself yet based on a 40 second clip. There are already a growing number of video podcasts happening around the net -- are you planning that kind of thing, except more polished, edited and compiled into a one hour "issue"? How else would your work be distinguished?

Great clip. Sorry to hear about your equipment, that is horrible. I think there will be alot more response once your first issue is out so we the public can see the offering. The suggestion I would have is too put out teasers monthly for free so people have to buy an issue to see the full thing. I wish you the best of luck as this is the sort of thing that might get pool noticed with your production skills and access to topics/subjects that illuminate the inner circle of pool.

Nathan...It was nice to meet you. This sounds like an outstanding idea, who's time has come. Good luck with every aspect! I still say that cute Chinese girl you were playing with at QMasters has a very natural stroke (you said she didn't play at ALL)!

As many of you know, I've been working hard on a secret new project for quite some time now. Dave and I just returned from the US Open, and while away on our trip, we decided to finally let the secret out.

The pool world has been asking for more coverage, better content, and higher production value. And so without further delay, we proudly present:

The Runout Media Video Magazine

Youtube clip (note that 720p HD is available)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HGVZyQY1Hsg

This will be a very high end video magazine that will launch in the second half of November 2010. We will be releasing 10 issues per year (every 5 weeks), and each issue will have an approximate running time of 60 minutes. Issues will be available in 720p HD, streamed instantly from our website. Physcial DVDs will also be an added option, bundled into box sets every 6 months. Subscriptions will be available upon launch at http://www.runoutmedia.com for $12.50 per issue, or a full year (10 issues) for a discounted $99.

Our intent is to deliver a fresh perspective on the pool world through the release of high quality video productions. Each issue will include a variety of segments that focus on international pool culture. Although each issue will include tournament coverage, we are not interested in resulting scores. Our focus will remain on the players, personalities, and community, with a strong emphasis on 'behind the scenes' content. As such, this will not be a news source, but rather quality billiard related entertainment.

Issue #1 will be released free next month. This will allow potential subscribers to see our unparalleled content, quality, and dedication. Issue #2 will launch at the same time, available to subscribers immediately.

The Runout Media Video Magazine will be an international release. We will be flying to events all over the world, including the Philippines, Europe, and the USA. This will allow viewers to see first hand what goes on behind the scenes at events such as the Mosconi Cup, World Championships, Derby City, etc. Viewers will also be treated to glimpses into the lives of the players when they are away from the table, after hours celebrations, and the cultural significance of pool in varying regions of the globe.

Stay tuned for more updates over the next few weeks. Updates will be available from our Facebook group and Twitter respectively:

If you could land a sponsor who has a low intro rate for first year, but right of first refusal on year two would give you a few extra bucks, and give the sponsor a chance to test the medium cheaply. If it sells, then they have the first right to pay the higher second year fee to keep the spot. A win-win if presented to them correctly.

In an hour of video, a sponsor could have a little "presented by" at the bottom of the opening sequence, a 30 second commercial in the middle, or just a small logo on the entire video, whatever. It would be unobtrusive and offset some costs.

I'd buy it, but like many things in pool, I would be afraid of it folding before it got going, so I would only buy each episode as it came out for the first year. After it showed some popularity, i would then prepay to save bucks.

I think you will have a hard time getting advanced yearly subscriptions, but you could probably get committments on the forum for a first episode, which would be a means of showing revenue potential to a sponsor.
