All around best american player??

johnnyt...Well, I wasn't there, and I can't find a player list, but the Goldsboro tournaments have a history of attracting many of the best players. Mike Gulyassy reported on the event that Earl won(http://forums.azbilliards.com/showthread.php?t=76051&highlight=earl+strickland,+carolina,+pocket), and I seem to recall there were most of the top players. McCready even played back in 2003!

I saw him win it, but I don't remember the best players in the country being there. But Earl can play any game top tier when he's got it together. Johnnyt

If you want to throw snooker and 3-cushion into the mix for a truer picture of "All-Around" best, then there is only one name that comes to mind: Mike Massey.

someting to think about

I would love to see an all around tournament and I think the finals would be very interesting.

Maybe Schimt and SVB?????

Any list of top players has to include Mosconi. I don't think I even saw his name mentioned. And before anyone says he didn't play one pocket or 9-ball, let me assure you he did--and great, too. Moreover, he was a titanic force at 14.1

The other guy that hasn't received his due is Sigel. For 20 years he dominated all kinds of tournaments. He was a great 9-ball player, on par with Buddy Hall or Strickland or Varner and better than Miz at 9-ball. In straight pool he and Miz were arguably the best. I think it's kind of a toss between them, which is to say--awesome!

Among modern players, I think Larry Nevel is the most talented pool player I have ever seen. I've been around pool for over 40 years, and I lived in NYC most of that time, where I saw nearly all the greats. But I have never seen anyone with more skills or more knowledge than him. If he had the mental toughness of someone like Stevie Moore, I think Larry would be the best player in the world.

Ted, I would have to agree. I don't think any American player today would be a match for Sigel in his prime. He excelled at all pool games, even Banks!

C'mon Jay, he was a big fish way back when...I'm not going to fight for Shannon but I know that guy can hit a gear that could fold SVB. SVB is consistently great and that's cool, but I've personally watched Shannon run over 30 banks in a row, one pocket he's as creative as it gets and has no fear in him...Galveston was no accident. He breaks the balls about as good as SVB and Nevel also and let's face it he runs out like he is from Kenya.

Just sayin' Jay....JUST SAYIN!!!!

your right here.
one pocket or banks shannon would rob him.
9 ball he is not the fav if they both in their prime.
so one pocket banks and 9 ball shannon is the fav 2 out of 3.

Ken...Earl WON the Carolina Classic, a 1 pkt event that hosted the best players in the country, just 2 or 3 years ago (this was a sort of "comeback" tournament for him, as he hadn't won anything in quite a while). Trust me, he can play 1-hole with the best of 'em! :D

Mr. Strickland played in the T-Town classic in Feb. I don't remember where he placed but I did watch a couple of his matches.

Nevel finished 2nd to Earl in the 1-pkt event I mentioned. Daulton played too!:D

Just trying to clarify what statement is being made, is it that Shannon or Siegel could hit a gear that would "fold SVB" and in what game.

You won't get much of an argument in 1P, but I think if you venture into 9-ball and especially 10-ball you might have some disagreement.

Shannon Daulton has to be the best all around player in the country followed extremely closely by Schmidt...the variable is straight pool and banks.

Shannon is a great player,he is one of the FEW I have ever seen run a entire race to 9 playing 9b,when shannons on its nothing for him to run 6 packs, not to mention his 1 hole and bank skills

For the best All Around player, we used to always consider Straight Pool as one of the games. In the 60's and 70's, Ed Kelly was considered the best All Around player by his peers. After him, it was either Mizerak or Sigel, with Hopkins, Rempe and Varner close behind.

Today, it might be John Schmidt or Danny Harriman for excellence in all three games (14.1, One Pocket and 9-Ball). Danny also excels in Bank Pool, so on that basis he may be #1. I'd like to see a true All Around World Championship playing these three games. Hasn't been one since the Stardust and Johnston City. Bank Pool has replaced Straight Pool in all similar events.

If you now make the best All Around player the one who excels at Banks, 9-Ball and One Pocket, the list could change. Shannon Daulton would have to be high on that list, if not on top. Danny Harriman might be the second choice now, with Sylver Ochoa moving up the list fast.

I hnk we are showing ur age here, but I agree, Kelly had the prettiest stroke I ever saw. he was so much fun to watch and a heelof a 3 cushion player too!

yep a nice choice and a versatile guy! But, if snooker and 3 cushion are thrown in, I think The Miz and Kelly are even stronger choices>

In an all around challenge Shannon doesn't have to lose in a set of 9-Ball or 10-Ball to nobody especially once he's firing. He can put packages together like Santa in December.

We were including Straight Pool in this mix. Who do you think the favorite was there? Too bad you didn't see Sigel play 20 years ago. You might think differently. Shannon didn't have to like it playing One Pocket, and he wasn't even that big a favorite at Banks.

It is close as to who was best between these two as an All Around player, but IMO Sigel gets the nod based on his 14.1 and 9-Ball superiority.

Okay so today..April 2010 who's the best all around player...3 days of practice, playing all 5 games I think Shannon would take it off against pretty much anybody. Especially anyone in the USA.
