"All Around" Player without One Pocket?

I agree with you Jay. Next to Efren Reyes, Danny Harriman is the best all around player out there today.

This guy somehow manages to stay under the radar. Probably because he doesn't make as much noise as some other people do. He is quiet, polite and always a gentleman. What a disgrace! Ha Ha.

Danny only plays high speed 9-Ball, One Pocket, Banks and Straight Pool. Look at his results at Derby City. He has high marks year after year. The only surprise is he hasn't won the All Around title yet. Must be that darn Efren's fault.

Blackjack,
I have so much respect for you and Jay's opinion. I'm not disputing Harriman's great skills. But, other than being way better in 14.1 than Daulton, I think Daulton is just as much better at 1 pocket than Danny is at 14.1. Daulton's pedigree in 1 pocket is almost legendary. Daulton's banking is world class even though they both have Derby City Classic Banking Championships on their resume. However, Daulton ALSO has two 9 Ball Championships AND an "All Around" Championship at DC as well.
So, in 14.1, Harriman by a mile. In 1 pocket, Daulton by a mile. Banks, I think the edge goes to Daulton based on he has oodles more knowledge in the game, having grown up on it. (The same as Harriman has that much more knowlege than Daulton in 14.1). As for 9 ball, what major titles does Danny have?
I don't know, but I personally think Daulton has the edge. Unless you guys are thinking that Daulton is not as active as he once was.

(I feel like the little mom & pop corner store going up against SAX 5th Ave in disputing you guys, but that's how I see it:) )

I agree, but was still typing post #22 when this was written. Remember, I am a slow typer...
I agree with what you say Jay, Danny is a top shelf player and a stand up guy as well, but I stand by #22.
Just look at my avator....:D

It would be a close match up between these two players in an All Around contest. Especially if they played all four games. Certainly, they are two of the best "all around" players today. But Danny can and does play 14.1, so in my opinion that makes him a better all around player.

Jay,
If they played all 4 games, Harriman will win because I know Shannon doesn't play 14.1.

My favorite type threads are these kind, where we debate who's better and how :)

Thanks everybody

Why doesn't shannon play 14.1?

I find it interesting that many 14.1 players don't play one pocket, and many one pocket players don't play 14.1. It seems like even Efren avoids playing 14.1, although we all know he's great at it.

Why is that exactly?

You may have to ask the players that one. I suspect it may have something to do with being a "tournament player" as opposed to a "gambler".

If you gamble at Pool, you MUST know One Pocket. If you are not a gambler (i.e. tournament player) then 14.1 is a more important game.

What Jay said...

lol

Danny has recently finished 3rd in the World Straight Pool Championships - last year he finished high in the field at the same event.

He finished near the top of the field at the recent World 10 ball championships... as a matter of fact he actually defeated the guy that won the event (handily) in the earlier rounds

Danny has finished very well in several 1 pocket events (Scottster could probably name them)

Danny conquered the field at the Chicago IPT qualifier - which IMO was the most competitive of all the IPT qualifiers that were held... then he went on to the IPT where he finished high in the field in Reno

9 Ball... Danny has always been a monster

I have just listed what has been going on with Danny in the last year and half...

Right now, I give the nod to Danny... but it would be a great matchup - especially in 1 pocket and banks... I'd buy a ticket!

He told me where he grew up (Kentucky) he just never played it enough to develop a love for that particular game.

And I do think geographical location has something to do with it. East coast rules 14.1. Kentucky is a hotbed for banks, as is Chicago and anywhere Toupee Jay is playing. One pocket and banks go together more than 14.1 and 9 ball, don't you think?
Plus the fact that some players get awesome at one paricular game and focus most of their energy into that discipline at the expense of forsaking the others. That's my guess.

If that wasn't posted here for posterity's sake, I would plagiarize that explaination and say I thought of saying it that way :D

Isn't Efren the defacto mayor of Derby City? ;)

Any player that can top the field in 4 out of 9 events and finish on top of the field in short race 1P for 5 out of 9 events is just what Jay says...KING!

I think only 4events are counted in "All-Around" category in DC, 8-ball, 9-ball, 1P and Bank.

Which makes Jay's boy Dennis Orcullo a monster.

Hohmann already has two World Championships in two disciplines, so he's obviously a great player.
I think he holds more world titles that that. Are you perhaps leaving out his world titles in 3 cushion and balkline? Or do those not count because the tables don't have pockets?

Thorsten has proven himself to be a great pool player and I do not attempt to detract from his skill in any way shape or form.

Although Germans are generally known to be very proficient at balkline and other "small" carom games, I believe you to be mistaken to associate Thorsten Hohmann with world titles on the pocketless table. I have never known him to participate at the professional level in any carom discipline (straight rail, balkline(s), 1-cushion or 3-cushion). I wouldn't be surprised if he played straight-rail casually, but I highly doubt that he has the ability to compete at the world level in any of the carom games. Notable German carom players that do include Martin Horn and Christian Rudolf.

Let's not forget forum regular John Schmidt. Here are just a few highlights from the last few years:

2007 World 14.1 - 5th
2006 US Open 9-ball - 1st
2006 World 14.1 - 9th
2005 DCC Banks - 13th
2005 DCC One Pocket - 16th

Hard to be comfortable betting again John in any of these games.

crosseyedjoe,

3 events are counted towards the "All around" title in Derby City, 9 ball banks, one pocket and 9 ball. There is no 8 ball at the DCC, unless it's after hours gambling somewhere.

Good one mthornto. Schmidt is also a top contender for best all around player today.

More like the King. He RULES!!!

Do you know if Efren gets paid just to show up in Derby City?

Is it true that Dennis made more money(including gambling) than Efren in DC?
