Exactly! Anytime someone attempts to pull this on me, I emphatically decline the doubling of the bet with a stoic, "Nope, you'll get your money back the same way you lost it -- come and earn it."

Yep, not a nit. Don't worry about it.

The op offered his opponent a chance to get his money back playing the same game, same bet.
When the opponent wanted to change it by doubling the bet, the op recognized it may be a move and said 'if you want to double the bet, I will, but I want the breaks'.
I still say smart, not nit.

Yesterday I played some one pocket a race to 3, 9-7 with a better player than I and happened to beat him. He wanted to double the bet and play again and I told him I would gladly give him a chance to win his money back playing with the same weight but if the bet doubles, I needed the breaks also.
That didn't go over with him very well and we never did play the second race, am I a nit or just smart.

You are a nit! Also a pansy, sissy, momma's boy, your very manhood might be questionable. Were I to do exactly the same thing, now that is being smart!
Race to three one pocket between two decent players is short enough to be a bit of a crapshoot. If you really got a little lucky or played a little over your head to win you would be silly to adjust the game in the other player's favor. That does include changing the bet to one you don't like. Do note this is from your perspective. If you were happy with the idea of doubling up, nothing wrong with it. If it was going to be a factor in your game, then yes you needed to balance that factor or maybe a bit more since the idea of gambling is to turn a profit, either short term or long term. If you are trying to make money now, don't accept match-ups that are coin tosses or worse.
I have known a double handful of gamblers that were successful in the long term over the years. Every one of them would be described as nits or worse on this forum. None would care though, they would just laugh as they pocketed the money.
What were the road players that knew over 90% of the time they were playing in the guppy pond?

What is the move? If the OP loses the second set he is only out what he would have been had he lost the first set. If he wins the second set he in now up three times the amount of the first set. It is actually a push with the OP getting a chance to parlay the other guys money. Heck, the guy may have been getting his nose open and may have gone bust at a losing game, who knows. All the OP did was tell they guy he was not worth gambling with. I think the OP screwed himself and came off looking like a fool. Another thing, people are watching and they judge what they may do with him based on what they see him do with others.
He just broadcast he is no good to gamble with and even the suckers will steer clear. No wants to be that kind of guy in the pool room. We all know them they won't play unless they have a guarantee they will win. Their idea of a fair game is 80 20 their way and even with that they lack the confidence to keep playing if they should lose even if they think they have the best of it. The OP accepted the game in the beginning because he liked it and won. Now he thinks he can't win, anymore? WTF. The OP is the one who should be trying to raise the bet.
I doubt the OP is a professional player trying to pay his bills with his pool winnings. He is a guy who goes to the pool room to match up. There are many reasons to play, some just like being the center of attention for a while as everybody gathers around to watch the match. There is a certain amount of prestige being a "player" in a room. People actually look up to you. No one wants to be the local "Nit" and pool room joke. You just want to play fair games and compete in a sport you have chosen. making any money is just a extra but playing is the most important part. You make the best and fairest games.
Really?
As Hu said it: got a little lucky or played a little over your head to win you would be silly to adjust the game in the other player's favor. Please don't say the double-up by the better player isn't a move.
And would you like to agree to take the worst of it and bet you can win 2 sets in a row? If so, I bet there is a long line of people you can play.
Your second paragraph is absolute bunk and your opinion, except the fact that some of the biggest scores are made by allowing the other player to go off.
Hi Jimmy;
Didn't mean to infer any mutual exclusivity, or even a lack thereof.
Just that I felt the op was both smart for not accepting a possible sucker bet on a rematch and that he was not a nit since he was willing to do a rematch for the original bet.

Macguy is it this guy's fault whoever he was playing was too impatient or incompetent to rob him properly? Seriously he's going to invest 1 set and just quit down if the guy won't jack it up right after that?
Oh and why would he quit hmm? Maybe cause he'd have to put in too much effort for too little money and risk killing his action? Never heard of that happening before
I considered myself lucky to have won the first race, because the OP is a better player. If we continued to play with the same spot he would eventually have robbed me.
By trying to negotiate a better spot it was my way of protecting myself from his move of doubling the bet.
He had two chances to recoup his cash......Play with the existing spot or increase the weight and double the bet, he chose neither as I sat idly by waiting for him to choose one.

Do you like sleeping in your car?
Are you willing to let your family starve so you can go off to a better player for your entire paycheck?
Are you OK with leaving the pool room busted because you kept playing when you were tired, just so you didn't have to quit winner?
If you answered "no" to any of these questions, then by most definitions, you are a nit. Sorry.![]()
