So a week or two ago I was trying to buy a case. A guy that is supposed to be my friend sees me trying to get this case, and before I can finish the deal, he steps directly in front of me and buys it. I was pissed, and asked him about it, and he was very sorry, said he thought I wasnt goin to buy it, and I could have it for what I was trying to buy it for. Cool, its over, just a misunderstanding, heat of the moment type thing. So I keep trying to get it from him, and he keeps saying we will figure it out later. He fills it with his cues, and says nothing more about it. So I am pissed again. He asks why I am pissed (but he already knows why), and says that he told me something he didnt. He is just trying to smooth it over, I guess he was hoping Id forget about a cheap case. He also had an old cue that I wanted pretty bad, and he kept telling me he didnt want to sell it. Thats cool, I understand, then I find out that he made a secret deal and got rid of the cue. Hey, its his cue and he can sell it to whoever he wants, but we are supposed to be friends, good friends, but our friendship got trashed over a $50 case and an old cue. My thinking is, if he is willing to hose me on a cheap case, what will he do if I am trying to buy a higher priced cue? Maybe I am overreacting, but Ive been hosed by a lot of "friends", and its just not worth the fuss. So I ask you AZ, am I wrong for dropping this "friend" from my radar?

It doesnt sound like he thinks of you as a close friend like you think of him. I'd quit dealing with him altogether as he doesnt sound like a friend. My best friend has been my friend for 24+ years now (We're both 29 now) and we would NEVER screw each other over like that. It sounds like this guy is only in it for himself and doesnt care about your thoughts as shown when he blocked you out and bought that case.

Thats the way I saw it too. The funny part is, I was there when he bought that old cue, but it was his deal, so I stayed out of it, because he got to the guy first. I guess its live and learn.

Yea I wouldnt have sweated the cue deal either, but from the way you tell it he snaked you bad on the case deal. If my friend calls me and tells me about this great deal he is fixing to get I'm not going to run out and buy it out from under him unless he tells me first he's not going to get it. Thats how I look at it anyways.

Nah, you didn't over react. Its not about the actual cost, its over principle.
If he'd dick you over something small, he'd really give you a going over for something more costly. I'd just fade him right off the radar screen. With friends like that, you don't need enemies.

Some people are

assh#les. You start from a position of trust. When that is lost-game over.

You didn't cause this. Recognize the behavior-categorize the behavior-reset your friend radar-and move on. Maybe you'll be cordial but this is now a different person in your eyes.

His loss-sounds like you were a good friend to this guy. He won't get it.

Let it go -why waste your energy.

Good luck

Joe, I don't think you are over reacting, in my opinion it is worth the trouble because hopefully you have learned a lesson. Dude this guy is not your friend and just be glad that you did not burned in a much more serious way than you did. I think it was a very cheap lesson and well worth the cost to find out how this individual actually feels about the friendship you have given him. With that said, I would not even concern myself about him anymore.

Oh and by the way Joe, there is an old saying that says screw me once shame on you, screw me twice shame on me!!!!!!!:)

Take care Joe.

I am glad you guys see it that way. I couldnt help but feeling like I was overreacting over a cheap case, but you guys are right, its the principle. Thanks.

Is this guy really your friend? One of our local guys borrowed some money from his pool room "friend" he'd known for thirty years. The "friend" charged him serious interest for a very short term loan. Asked why he charged the interest. "He's not my friend, just an acquaintance" was his answer! Seems to me your guy is just that, no more.

You didn't over react.

There is an old saying if you loan a friend $20 and you never see him again, then it was worth it.

Distance yourself from this jerk and surround yourself with people with better character.

This is an interesting thread, one I am sure many here can identify with your situation.

There's an old auction adage that applies here, "There are no friends at an auction".

You might be overreacting...but hear me out. He is not your friend. You should be thankful you learned his character so cheaply. IMO no reason to react at all. Just be grateful and move on. Your life will be better without him in it.

Joe,

He's an absolute tool.....if I see my buddy trying to buy a case, it is absolutely off limits until he decides he doesn't want it....

If I offer to sell him a cue and he is interested, he gets first chance, even if someone else offers me more....

Friends come first, always.....this guys obviously doesn't value friendship....

It has been said before," keep your friends close, but your enemies closer."
Now you know.

People have a choice, stick to their word, show that they truly have character and do what they say they will for no other reason than living up to their good name. When it comes time for you to make the choice, which way will you choose?

I just had a situation with a guy I was blowing off as a business friend because he broke a promise to me. He was trying to explain that when he made the promise he couldn't foresee the situation coming up where he was tempted to break his promise. I explained that in my world, the fact that you can't see what is going to come up later is exactly why you make promises today. I wished him well and also made it known that I also wished to not do any business together in the future.
