Another Day in Manila

Thanks

Thanks for the interesting and well written story. The culture there is so fun, friendly, and embraces gambling at every level.

Try playing some mahjong! It can't be played properly without gambling... :D

Love your passion Jay! Moral of the story: never back into it, lol.

I wish I'd have been there with you and played some partners with you! Thanks for sharing, keep 'em coming!

Happy Thanksgiving!

love the philippines...just a different atmosphere compared to the U.S....are you staying there for xmas?...I've never have....heard its a hell of a lot of fun there...besides the food food and more food..enjoy..and shoot well out there...bring us more stories..can't wait to take a trip out there again...maybe in the near future..until then

Christmas is not "a hell of a lot of fun" in the PI. It's already started. Children running around in packs--singing "we wish you a Merry Christmas" and then hold out there hand for money. Christmas time is an "excuse" to beg. I don't need or want a bunch of kids signing "we wish you a merry Christmas" at my front door at 8:30PM two weeks before it's even fricking Thanksgiving.

hey scrooge its called Christmas carolling, done in almost every part of Christian countries. If you don't like it then just ignore them and they will go away. I bet your FILIPINA wife gives them some loose change which will make their night. Christmas is not all begging here in the PI. There's midnight masses (simbang gabi), carnivals, shows etc. Disney on Ice comes over here every year during the Christmas season.

dude, I have family there...that's just your point of view..anyway...say what you will...I miss the PI and hope jay brings us more stories..

I like to carry my wallet in a front mid thigh zippered pocket on cargo shorts whenever I go out in PI. I'm still paranoid they'll find a way to get it out of there. I also carry my cash loose in a front pocket touching my balls.

Jay do you bring your own cues or do you give them a chance by using local equipment? The last time I went was the first time I brought any cues and ended up leaving them as gifts with my wife's cousins. My favorite Huebler sneaky pete and a cheap Meuchi. I bet they treasure them though. My wife will never let me on a long enough leash to find any fun gambling. She's always afraid they'll stab me if I win.:(

Hello Dindo, I will be at PAGCOR Airport Casino tomorrow for the Big Time Billiards shoot out with Django and Peach. Maybe I'll see you there.

Jay,
You are making a lot of happy men and women all over the globe with your thread and posts.

GREAT REPORT FROM THE FIELD.

Do you have any more books left in you to write?

How about taking some pictures of your opponents and posting them in the thread?

Thanks Joey, My second book will be out early next year. I wish I could get you to write the forward again. :D
I did take some photos in the poolroom which I will post when I return home. You'll love John-John, a skinny kid with no shoes or shirt, who plays a solid B speed. He's a lightweight hustler hanging in this room every day waiting for a fish to come in. Gotta love him, that was me once upon a time. :)

What an adventure. That PP must have mad skills especially as the pocket was velcroed. I have a hard time getting in my own velcroed pocket.

I guess you know all your cards that you got back are still useless. Unless things are different now, once you cancel a card, you cant uncancel it.

Good luck the rest of the trip.

The credit card companies are great at replacing cards as I just found out. I will have new cards within ten days. I guess they like my business! At 12.9% why not.

Pangit you are correct, I was in the park the other night and small groups of very young kids came to us and sang Xmas carols. I LOVED IT! Such beautiful children and they were not begging. I would give them each 5P and they would run off laughing. Inside I was laughing too. :D

This is a land of smiling faces, friendly greetings, and many small considerations. Yes, there are often long delays, but unlike the Army, it's well worth it. Delicious fresh fruit available everywhere, NO pesticides either! Plus our money has real value here. Only electronic products are priced the same as in the USA. I can buy a nice motorbike for $1,000, a good car for $5,000 or a large condo for $30-50,000. Good food is pennies on the dollar compared to back home.

On my third cue here but this one is a keeper. Made by Raymond Bautista, a fine cue maker. I paid 10,000p for it, about $235. I would guess it might sell for five or six hundred in the USA. Beautiful wood, nice clean shaft and a very solid hit. I carry it with me every day, just in case. I seem to have a problem passing up a pool hall.

No wife, a very nice GF and wonderful child (30 months old now) yes. I come about three times a year, usually for three weeks each time. The visa is only good for three weeks but you can apply for an extension. In the future I plan to stay longer, up to three months at a time.

Thanks Jay great story. By the way your book is super. I gave it to my grandson a few moons ago. The young man is in love with the game. It sure helped bring us closer together. Sure looking forward to your new book. Thanks again, Skip

Thanks everyone for the nice responses. It's great to share this with all of you. No more pool adventures for now, time spent with family, especially my daughter. She got her little toe stepped on and lost a nail, so she's suffering now. We went yesterday to a huge kiddie park near my hotel. It's on the edge of Rizal Park, maybe the largest in Manila. This park had large replicas of dinosaurs, set up as slides and hiding places for kids to explore. I took four kids and they had a blast, as did I just watching them. My little tiger was the youngest kid in the park (you had to be over two), and still went down the biggest slides, screaming all the way. A little daredevil in the making.

Tonight I go to the casino for the Bustamante-Peach match. You can watch it at (and bet) at Megassportsworld.com. They continually change the line during the course of the match. These people have it down when it comes to creating action.

In Europe they try to pickpocket or by some other means steal passports of Americans. Huge black market for passports over there.

I'm glad you got all your stuff back and didn't get hurt.
