Another event? If there was another prominent

Straight pool championship calibre event held annually, what month would be best for players and fans? Timing is crucial, while noting the imperative not to conflict with any other major events. Assuming that accustats continues, followed by the world 14.1 in August, the world 9ball and Maryland in September, what do you think the best month of the year would be to hold a tournament? Please give your reasoning, too.

Thanks
RG

You have to weigh in Mosconi Cup, US Open 9 Ball, tunica, derby city, Super Billiards Expo, and the Turning Stone Classic ( which is twice a year) also the Johny Archer Classic. Then besides look around for regional Yours that may conflict with where you are holding it. Pending on the skill level of the tournament you are considering.

Hope this helps

Here is a link to the 2013 WPA Calendar. Nothing much out on the 2014 one yet.

I would think you need some input from the movers and shakers that actually know when some of the big events are planned for next year.

One of the realities of the world of pool is that to get internationally elite players to American events, tournaments, which may or may not be related other than being in a single geographic area, must be bundled on the schedule.

1. At Derby City, there are now five legitimate competitions

DCC Bank Pool
DCC One Pocket
DCC Nine Ball
Big Foot 10-ball
Straight Pool Challenge

2. The Southern Classic weeks now offer

Southern Classic Bank Pool
Southern Classic One Pocket
Southern Classic Nine Ball
Southern Classic 10-ball
Ultimate 10ball

3. The BCAPL weeks now offer this lineup

Hard Times 10-ball
US Open One Pocket
US Open 10-ball
US Open 8-ball

4. The world 14.1 event just completed had this lineup

World 14.1
Steinway Open
Ginky Memorial

Here in the Northeast US, where more 14.1 is played than anywhere else, a new 14.1 event would somehow have to be bundled with other events on the schedule.

The other significant and recurring events in the Northeast are Super Billiards Expo and Turning Stone.

Looking for a Window
If one looks closely at the schedule, Turning Stone took place from January 10-13 and Derby City began, I think on January 25. Derby City is during the last week of January every year, so if Turning Stone will have an event every January, too, the slot in between might be a good one for a new 14.1 event.

My choice, therefore, is mid-January between Turning Stone and Derby City.

This event won't be in the northeast

I am likely thinking a summer tournament, that proceeds the accustats or world event. This gives the international players the ability to fly in a few days/weeks earlier as they'd plan on coming anyway.

You are certainly correct Stu, that these events should be clustered together so as not to cause additional hardships, in the form or travel expenses, on the players.

Perhaps some time in July would be the most appropriate time. My biggest concern of course would be that I would not be interested if there was a chance to shift the spotlight away from the world. Now that I typed that out, I feel unconvinced about July. Hmmmm

Hey! Don't forget you'll have to worry about what BB is doing in Vegas.

14.1 Pool > Another event? If there was another prominent

The BCAPL events have moved to July - effective 2013.

July 16-26 is the dates for 2014.

I would like to see a WPA sanctioned 14.1 event. Perhaps bring back the World Championship! (The World Championship requires $75,000 added)

BTW - we have the name US Open Straight Pool Championship - which we last used in 2007. I would really like to revive it!! (There is no added money requirements)

Interested?

About a few things, if you have time. Additionally, Thorsten texted you last week and I called the contacts you gave him but have never received a return call.

Thanks

I remembered Mark G saying on a podcast that he's been wanting to revive the US Open Straight Pool which I think is a fantastic idea. I almost mentioned that fact in this thread, but I figured Mark would chime in and I'm glad to see he did. I'd like to see this come off.

With the previous owners of the name, to revive this event. There is some history here.

Drexeline Billiards Near Philly

That would be great! Even better if it was held someplace with a parking lot.

How about hosting the proposed US Open at Bob Maidhof's room? Plenty of tables and plenty of parking!!!
