Anybody Remember a Guy Called "Mountain Man?"

I think someone here said Steve Edwards and Eddie Hubble were the same Mountain Man. Maybe I am wrong but I thought this was brought up here before and that was said. Regardless, I knew the Mountain Man you are talking about Craw and I think I think he went by Steve (been over 10 yrs since I saw him). We always just called him Mountain Man so nobody really cared what his name was. He played well on a barbox fo sho. I played him in a few tournaments in the late 90's around this area. He was a good guy from what I remember.

I messed with him cheap and then put a strong player on him. We didn't like the mudball action. Broke even with him and quit. Man, this is when Scott (the player) had just beaten Tony Ellin a couple of sets. Slow and easy he was. Slow and easy.

Not A.J.

Do you mean A.J. Clemen's? Probably had black hair and possibly a black beard and mustache at the time? Best game was one pocket?

I believe this guy is a little older than AJ. Yea, the one I knew was Steve Edwards. Only time I played him was in a tourney. He did teach me a neat trick shot in Vegas last time I saw him. Sorry to hear he passed away. He was always friendly to everyone the times I saw him.

Something tells me he went by an alias of Steve Edwards but the real name of the real "mountain Man" was Eddie Hubble. He had alot of names over the years I heard most definitly. If anyone knows Ron Frank in the Radford /Dublin area of Virginia, he spent the most time with him and was his backer for a few years. Eddie stayed with him for a period. He can answer all your questions about him.

Sounds like A.J. he definitely wears a lot of flannel...lol
If it is...he's played here in Missouri off and on for years and has been back here now for probably about 4 or 5 now...he's lost a step at rotation games and such but still plays good one pocket.

A.J.'s a little different no doubt, but he's a pretty good guy once you get to know him...unfortunately at least for a while there he was actually living at a homeless shelter in St. Louis. I haven't seen him in a couple of months but I heard last week or so he was recently at a tournament down in Cape Girardeau I think...I forget who's been backing him recently but he's definitely still around.

Is this Artie Clemens? I knew him years ago and what an incredible character. I liked him, but, definitely different.

I remember "mountain man" he came thru a few spots in the Anderson / Greenville areas of South Carolina in the early nineties. 1991 if I remember correctly. I remember the groove he had in that long reddish beard where the due stick had worn away the hair. He played real good on the bar box. The nickname suited him well.

This is the Mountain Man.

I took this picture from my friend Joe Barr's MySpace page. Joe owns a room in Mount Airy, NC by the way called Granite City Billiards. Action can be found there.

Thats the "mountainMan"!

This a later pic of him soon before he died I think. The 2007 date on the pic confuses me though... he died in 05

The guy in the pic is the one I remember from the VNEA tournaments in Vegas back in the early to mid 90's that everyone called MM. At the time I do remember him using the Steve Edwards name too.

AJ (Artie, Art) stayed around my area for a while but his nickname here was "tippy toes". As mentioned his one pocket game was his strength. Last time I saw him was in Vegas a few years back at the BCA and hardly recognized him. He was clean shaven, hair cut and wearing nice clothes. By the end of the week you could see the old Art beginning to reappear.

Artie was an incredible character and a pretty darn good player at one time.

He had a law suit against Mountain Bell Telephone CO. at one time which nearly drove him right over the edge. It was sad, but could be quite funny too.

He was explaining it at my house one night and how the government had stolen all his eveidence from a safe deposit box when my wife called me into the bedroom and demanded he get the hell out of our house. It was absolutely hilarious. They butted heads on about every topic known to man.

He once came to me busted in Denver and explained a plan to go on the road and knew where he could make a score. He asked for $600 to stake the trip. I really didn't want to, but I hadd to get him out of town to preserve my marriage and gave him the money.

About 3 months goes by and he walks into the pool room with that big smile and calls me out to his car. He had dpad locks on the trunk of his car and two safes in the trunk. He finally got everything open and began to explain and count. In the end he handed me $5500 and said he had taken all expenses off the top. I stood there in total shock and speechless.

He was a falke, but an incredibly honest man and that I always respected.

I haven't seen the guy in about 20 years now. Tell him Butch says hello.

That's the dude! That's the dude! Is he still alive? If so, please pm me and I'll give him my number. I want to play him some more. NO MUDBALL. Anything but the mudball. One pocket, nineball, tenball, whatever. Man, thanks for the pic and what a flashback. I know he was staying in Myrtle Beach when I played him. Any info or background?

I remember him as being heavier, though. I hope I have this right.

You missed playing him any more pool by about 4 years.

I think that there are a few players around the country - past and present - nicknamed Mountain Man.

AJ is the one known here in the Midwest. He has spent most of his pool playing days either in Missouri, Illinois or Kentucky.

You won't find a picture of him because he won't allow one to be taken.

AJ beats to his own drum. He has incredible pool knowledge and is a great hustler.

When I was younger and worked in the pool room, some guys from southern Missouri would come up every Friday to play. I had AJ waiting for them one Friday night and filled him in on all of their speeds. He worked it like a champ, beating them in order and never showing his true game. He can miss 'safe' with the best of them.

Also, DO NOT EVER ask AJ to go to the horse track. EVER.

You know...I hate to admit this, but I've known A.J. for a few years now...and I have no idea what the "A" in A.J. stands for...lol
But I'd guess it probably is...and I'll be sure to ask him next time I see him.
He's definitely a different bread...but I like him quite a bit too. You'd never know it when you meet him, but he's a pretty intelligent guy, he's got a wealth of old sports knowledge (particularly about boxing) that surprised the heck out of me. Unfortunately, I think he also suffers from a little paranoia...which can make for some interesting moments when he starts thinking "they're" out to get him...but judging from your last post...maybe he's not so paranoid after all...:o

I played MM in a small town in Tennesee a few years back, there was always another guy with him and we finished 1,2,3 (no particular order) every tourney(small box). He told me he had been out to Vegas(league) with Tony Watson, can't remember who else but a real strong team.

Oh, make no mistake, paranoid is the perfect word. I could go on and on about this, but, won't.

He did state once though that he thought his mom had put something in his food when he was young to keep him from growing. When he told my wife this, well, she went into orbit. Their arguments were entertaining to say the least.
