How do some of the guys around here afford to drop more tha 1500 a cue, sometimes more than that. wow. Geez i need a layaway plan to afford some of the cues around here. Im sure its prob a decent investment though, kind of like my card collection.

I've never physically dropped that much on a cue unless I had just sold another... you just buy a decent $700-800 cue and start trading up...dereklovejoy said:
As far as "taking payments" - sure, you can do this when you are having a custom built, which actually is quite nice because if you don't have the funds immediately available, you can support your cuemakers by providing them business, ordering what you want to detail, and take up to (and upwards) of a year to pay for it.
the last couple of custom cues i ordered i paid half up front and half after completion. it's actually pretty affordable when you do it that way

The only way that I can even afford my cues is because they are special ordered.
Most cue makers take half to a quarter up front and then expect the remainder upon completion.
500 down on a 1500 cue is somewhat normal. 6 month build time(sometimes more depending on the guy) I like to just send 200 a month until I get it paid in full which puts me about a whole month ahead of finish schedule.

ive got a long way to go before i can hit the retirement scene. a degree around here dosent do much for you. I drive a dump truck for a construction outfit and make as much as my g/f who has a masters degree, but i do have to work more than the 8 hours a day she has to, but its ok. Though in the winter i get laid off for a month or so, so that cuts into the paycheck, though this year i decided to sell some cues to do something while i am laid off.
Where're you from? maybe you should move
dereklovejoy, I realize time off is scarce, but if your construction job has regular hours, maybe you can use an hour a day of your off time to develop something that will turn into a career. In 5 years or so it may work into full time and lucrative. Someone wise once told me the next 5 years are going to pass whether you stay where you are at or whether you work on something to advance. we live up here in rural maine, ive been trying to talk her into moving for a long time though it does look like now that we will have to move since her career will require her to. Bad thing though is we just had a house built. Not all bad though we have enough equity in the land and house that we should come out on top. Be nice if we could go somewhere that there was a pool hall within a few minutes.

Why would you live in a snow filled climate, and wiithout Billiard rooms! ...LOL
I like a little snow, but don't like to be inundated with it.
You would be surprised at the number of women in the country with Master's Degrees that only make 25-40K a year. My neice is one of them, and graduated with honors from College and Summa Cum Laude from Graduate College. The only mistake that I see that they make, is they choose the wrong field to go into, ones that do not have the earnings potential.
In the mean, her younger brother, who doesn't have a degree, but has military service, has received a couple of promotions, a recent one just put him into a position of authority over about 16 people, and he makes more than 2 Masters and a PHD within our family unit.
And as far as having degrees, which I do, it doesn't make one iota of difference if the company is downsizing you out, or outsourcing your job
to someone over in India. Companies have no loyalty anymore to its employees, the bottom line is what drives them, whether the decisions are good for the long term or not. Another bad habit companies have developed is once you hit 40 or 50, and have several years with the company, they start looking to get you out someway because your benefit package cost them a lot, and your salary too.
Also, Platinum has some nice looking Schons cues, mostly on Page 2 and a little more expensive, but IMO, would be worth it.
I know how hard it is to save for a cue, and was able to get my first custom from the profit I made from selling a house. My wife and I both decided NOT to have kids. We both work and have pretty good jobs. That allows us to travel and to blow money on things like cue sticks (well okay, only I buy the cue sticks...lol).

I cut my phone bills, I don't eat much as I do regularly, I avoid buying other stuffs which I buy on a quarterly basis like shoes, diamonds, electronic gadgets, etc... and last but not the least, I'll postpone my travel plans or even going outside the house, coz there is a high tendency that I would spend.

If the cue maker takes paypal ,paypal will finance six months
no intrest (paypal buyer credit) I did that on a cue for 850.00
one time .I think some credit cards do the same thing .I hate credit
but I did not want to miss out on that particular cue .I repair
big screen tvs and got lucky and a guy gave me a big tv and I
fixed it and sold it for 25.00 short of what I had paid for the cue
I got lucky/blessed what ever you want to call it .

with it ,he is very easy to deal with and knowledgeable about
the industry .
