Archer says Charlie Williams is in, AZ forums are wrong

Frankly, it would shock me at this point if any member of Team USA were to do anything but endorse the choice of Charlie. It is important that this matter be brushed aside and that the players be allowed to focus on what's really important ---- preparing as best as they can for competition.

This situation reinforces why Mark Griffin is a cut above the rest when it comes to event production. He not only cares what those who play, support or attend his events want but makes it easy for them to share their ideas and concerns with him, enabling him to better serve his constituency of professionals, patrons and sponsors. Thanks also to Justin (JCIN) for providing the platform through which Mark is interacting so effectively with all those interested in his events.

In stark contrast, others prefer to disenfranchise the sponsors, promoters and fans in favor of being self-serving. Strangely enough, these are precisely the same groups that a) routinely remove the promoters from the process of mapping out pool's future, b) find it hard to fathom why amateurs and fans don't support the pros more, and c) wonder why sponsors are not more enthusiastic in their support of the pro game.

A couple of years ago, baseball decided to allow the fans to select a member of the All-Star team. I was impressed that pool followed this lead and allowed the fans to select a member of the Mosconi Cup team. When Hatch, the fans' choice, was the MVP of Team USA, it was a big deal and the fans felt they had a piece of the victory. Now, the guys at Matchroom don't care which players the fans are keenest on seeing and have lowered the profile of the captain position by leaving the choice in the hands of players who've already demonstrated that they are willing to completely ignore what their fans and sponsors want.

The escalating disenfranchisement of pool's supporters continues to threaten the vitality of pro pool in America, and it's a crying shame.

... but it's time to focus on the event, and wish Charlie and Team USA every possible success against Team Europe. For those Americans who plan to attend the Mosconi Cup, I urge you to support Charlie and Team USA in every possible way.

PS Agree with Vagabond, just as good to applaud anyone that performs with excellence.

I consider Mosconi Cup as a Family Feud between the Europeans and their long lost American cousins. I stay out of the family fights and I am not taking any sides. I will stay neutral and clap for whoever makes a good shot. LOL:cool:

I think the players have made their bed and and can now sleep in it. And though they fly our country's colors, it is obvious that, for a sizable number of American fans, this team does not embody what they want to see. Personally I believe our team's captain position should be filled by a senior member of the United States professional pool community.

To me, it is a position of honor.

The person who is captain should reflect the best of what we have to offer in terms of accomplishments, experience, the respect of their fellow players, talent, temperament, spirit, and bring with them a certain amount of gravitas. I think, however it ended up happening, Matchroom and the players that had a hand in deciding who would take that slot, missed the boat this year. But that's just me.

I agree, 100%.

Based on their play at the US Open, I would like to have seen either Allen Hopkins, Kim Davenport, or even Nick Varner again as the captain. Heck, if I had to decide I would have picked Earl Strickland. I believe the captain should have been someone from the older generation of players, not a young gun.

I agree with you,Hopkins, kim.varner ,Earl would of been my over all pick, but i say give Charlie a chance,he is all we have and thats it for now,i would not consider Charlie a young gun anymore, hes been around for a very long time now,25 years or more,i do beleive.so i say ,go with what we have and wait and see what happens ,who knows he mite just be the perfect fit,now for him deserving the job, probably not,but thats not going to make me not root for my country!

There was dissention and a firm undertone of dissatisfaction that I felt and was told in confidence, during my helping out at the Bike club yrs ago. Those issues and concerns have either subsided or are considered the cost of doing business with CW.

Since the players are behind em then their play will show us their true feelings. As we all know, top players have difficulty performing to their potiential if emotions are not in check. Proofs in the Pudding.

Some of the people's attitudes here are exactly why the US is in the shitter...

When you allow politics to determine your decisions at the dismay of the consumer, the consumer can't continue to buy the product if they want change. I was originally planning on coming out to vegas for this, then I decided I would stay at home and watch it, but now, I'm afraid I probably won't even do that.

If the decisions are all gonna be made for political reasons in ways that the fans don't want, I can't support that and that many of you still say, come on we're stuck with it, let's support them is kind of pathetic to me.

This is why the US political system is in the shitter, people just accepting that things happen for political reasons and still supporting them.

This reminds me of a friend I had growing up. He would get into trouble, ditching school, shop lifting, breaking into the school and stealing the grade book/computer of the teacher, selling drugs.

It got progressively worse as we got older and I had to stop being his friend.

But it was all because he was rewarded for the bad behavior. When he ditched class, his mom went out and bought him a BB gun, when he got caught shoplifting, his mom went out and bought him an RC car, when he got caught stealing the computer, his mom bought him a new ford ranger....

Each time she caught him doing something bad, she erroneously thought it was because he was upset about the way she was raising him, so she would buy him stuff to try and buy his good behavior. That's positive reward for bad behavior and will almost always lead to more bad behavior.

Yes, it sucks not being able to root on team USA, but if we want to make sure that politics don't lead the way, we have to choose to suffer, because otherwise we are rewarding the behavior that we don't like and it will inevitably lead to more of the same behavior.

This is a well-reasoned and well-presented post. Still, despite some of the unsavory politics encompassing thre Mosconi Cup, the American pool fan might gain from the re-emergence of the American pros on the world stage of pool. Hence, there is a side of me that wants to look away, but another that makes me pay attention. In my case, the latter impulse is the stronger of the two, and I, therefore, choose to root hard for Team USA.

Seems to me the ABP has decided to try to improve the state of American pool as it relates to the players. Their threatened boycott of the US Open
(which seemed extremely short-sighted to me) seemed to only benefit (and I was really at a loss to see the benefit to them in trying to trash the US Open) the players and really ignore the wishes of the fans. This move with CW seems somewhat similar, a way to pat one of their own on the back with zero regard for the fans of the sport.

Maybe the ABP will make the sport better for the players and maybe in the long run that will benefit the fans.

Maybe its just a self-serving organization looking to wrest control of a sport like a spoiled child grabbing their ball.

I guess we will see.

Thanks

Kevin

Charlie pays Johnny and that is why he own's him

I will not support the Mosconi Cup.

IslandDave, I too helped at the Biycle Club, enough said of Charlie.

Kevin, I agree with you and Lou.

Sorry pool fans, but I won't support, Dragons (mosconi) Cup.

Saving my money for the Derby and my kid's Christmas presents.

My full name is Charles Lee Williams. I was born in Seoul, Korea on Jan. 5, 1977. My Korean Name is Heoun Ho Kim,

So why do we call him Charlie? Shouldn't we call him Heoun?

Here's an interesting piece I just found. Notice how he says he was BORN in Korea (USA team captain???) and notice how eager he is to let the world know how single he is (at the bottom)......
