I'm traveling to the US Open next week and flying into Philadelphia - does anyone have any advice on the best/easiest way to get from Philadelphia to Atlantic City?

You can take a bus. I don't think there are trains.

I just checked and a rental car Sunday to Sunday from PHL looks available for $450 including taxes and fees. I rented a car last year. Budget should be avoided -- not a nice experience.

A brief search says Uber/Lyft is about $100.

A site that will find shuttles for you finds prices that start at $600 round trip. o_O

I got a car so I was not tied to the host hotel and I could look around the area some and go out to restaurants.

I'm local to the area.

There is a train that goes from Philly to AC, But that puts you in town center. You need the water front which is a few miles north. And the center of town is a real shithole. I wouldn't recommend that if you are not local

I think the best is rent a car and take the AC expressway.

Locally there is really nothing around Harrah's besides another casino.

Are you going to be there for the entire week? If so I would say the rental car maybe a good option.

Be careful in AC. Not exactly paradise.
Google AC…
Stay on the boardwalk Though the city is generally safe during the day, you shouldn't wander too far off the beaten path, especially after dark. Avoid walking behind the casinos and on the beach at night.

There are people going from Philly. I'd try to chip in for gas and ride with someone.

I used to live 50 miles north of AC and would go to the casinos quite often.
During the summer at night the boardwalk was full of people and walking to the other casinos was pretty safe, not so in the winter.

If you’re at the boardwalk stay inside the casino at night it’s not too safe. During the day isn’t so bad you can walk around town. None of the hoodlums are around Harrah’s so the area is safe. Just nothing is around Harrahs besides other casinos

Here's one of your options, but you'd need to find your way from the airport to the bus pickup spot in Philadelphia, which is Broad St at Cherry St. Perhaps someone from Philadelphia knows where that is and whether it's a safe spot, but I have no idea.

Alternatively, if you can find someone traveling at about the same time as you, sharing an UBER might be your best bet.

COREYD - Not Many Options; unless you are simply going to Uber it directly to Harrah's (which is actually over the bridge on Brigantine island, nowhere near downtown AC boardwalk casinos; being 3 miles away), then, my best advice would be:

If you are flying into Philly, you could:

1. From inside PHL Airport, take the local train (SEPTA Regional Rail line) from the Airport train platform to Philadelphia 30th St. Station ($7, 20 minute ride);

then,

2. From within 30th Street Station in Philadelphia, you then board the NJ TRANSIT Atlantic City Rail Line (around $15, 1 hour 30 minutes) to AC Train Station;

then,

3. From the Atlantic City Train Station, grab a waiting cab over the bridge to Harrah's in Brigantine (less than 10 minutes, probably cost you nearly as much as both train tickets combined with tip!) - OR, if you see one of the local Jitney Mini-Buses marked for Harrah's waiting for a full load of passengers (or simply ask the driver) those are only a couple of dollars - slower and bumpier; but cheap at $2.50.

Jitney.jpg

So, from Philadelphia Airport, you will arrive at Harrah's in 2 hours travel-time for about $25 total, if you use the Jitney and one short and one longer, but really relaxing, train rides between Philly and AC - Driving direct by car takes 1 hour travel-time (depending on the traffic), by comparison.

While at Harrah's, you can also take a Jitney (mini shuttle buses that go from casino to casino) up and down the road to both The Borgata or The Golden Nugget to get around for a couple of dollars if you want to visit the other casino resorts on Brigantine island.

As far as going into downtown AC-proper is concerned, I can't recommend it - unless you have a specific destination in mind.

There used to be an absolutely fantastic Mexican restaurant on Atlantic Avenue called, Los Amigos, which was partly owned by Patricia Shemeley (one of the 3 'Amigos'), who was an old golfing-friend of Jean 'The Queen' Balukas; however, that restaurant is now sadly closed after a very, very long run.

Even the Atlantic City Billiard Club is no longer located in Downtown AC. They moved their entire operation out of Atlantic City and about 10 miles (15 minute drive) up the Atlantic City Expressway to Egg Harbor Township on the Black Horse Pike. It's a good/friendly room with 20+ Gold Crowns, c.7000 sqft. - "No Bar, No Pinball Machines, No Bowling Alleys... just Pool, nothing else." So, if you want to check-out the local players while 'in-town', you might drop in there; but, I absolutely recommend calling first to confirm hours of operation and league-traffic/in-house tournaments, etc, for any given day.

Let me know if you need any other info - GJ

I talked to one of the refs last year at the event.
You have to take 3 - 4 modes of transportation to get there if cost is important and arrival times not a concern.
If someone said Uber for $100 that's seems kind cheap, since it's about 50 miles one way.
Gentleman Jims explanation seems to be what I heard last year.
It's a goat rope for sure.

What are some good places to eat, outside of Harrah's? I heard Borgata buffet is good. They're not open Monday and Tuesday, only from Wednesday - Sunday.
